Of course, that bit of honesty was just a preface to how the PS3 is in good shape now, with special kudos given to Grand Theft Auto IV and upcoming games sure to give the console a boost (Snake, you there?). Somewhat peripheral to gaming, but our favorite line from the writeup is when Stringer "notes that if it had lost the format war, his gravestone would have read "Betamax 2." Video of Sir Stringer's interview after the break.
PS3 was on 'life support,' admits Sony CEO

Walt Mossberg managed to pull a mighty fun quote from Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer. During an on-stage interview at D6, Stringer said that the PlayStation 3 "was on life support for awhile," a pretty honest statement from the top executive of a multibillion dollar corporation about one of its flagship products.

SONY seems like there really down to earth now. MS on the other hand used to seem as if they were down to earth, but there pr people like greenberg or watever is a douche. Roles have reversed, i wonder if it will happen again. LOL at betamax 2 on gravestone.

I can see why he'd say that. He inherited a huge clusterfuck of a engineering nightmare from that borderline whacko Kutaragi and a PR department hell bent on destroying the company. The guy probably pulled 80 hour weeks for the bulk of his career there trying to figure out ways to keep the thing from completely failing. He did a marvelous job, though nothing short of divine intervention will make this unit remotely as popular as the PS2 was. I'm sure they're hard at work developing a PS4 that isn't an overly expensive piece of untested technology.

uh, you should REALLY look up more about Kutaragi, he is far better than Stringer, its just that there were some issues between Kutaragi and the previous Sony CEO, whom ended up setting him up to fail.
The only executives I have respect for nowadays from the 3 console manufacturers are only Shiggy, somewhat Iwata, and Kutaragi

Yeah seriously. He's right. Kutaragi takes shit from fanboys, but anyone who actually knew anything about him would realize he was one of the greatest, most influential executives in video game history. The man was a genius at what he did.
Sony pushed him out because they needed a scape goat.

So, you're saying geniuses spend billions of dollars on products, sell them for a loss, cram them full of objects typical consumers won't pay extra for and talk up the unit well beyond what it actually does? Hell, I'm gonna start up a company and hire dumbasses then, guaranteed success.

I have to say I agree. Kuturugi is a very pie in the sky kind of person who has caught shit his entire career. Let's put it this way, you know how awesome the SNES sounds? That's Ken Kuturugi's design. In fact, he was nearly fired from Sony because, when he was a member of the walkman division, he agreed to take on this task from Nintendo. Sony's attitude was "we don't make toys" the entire time. Only one man stuck by him as the entire company nervously looked on at Super Famicom's debut. He fought resistance again as he decided to take on the Super Famicoms disc drive project. In fact, the first time Kuturugi saw unanimous support for the project was when Nintendo basically betrayed Sony during the CES it was supposed to debut.
Kuturugi's weakness is he's thinking 20 years down the road instead of 5. And you don't give someone like that an unlimited budget. PS3 had proven to be a money sinkhole similar to PSX and PS2 but during an era when Sony was failing as a company and needed to be refocused. Kuturugi, despite being given free reign, was taken to task for TAKING free reign and like Gumpei, had to be made example of.
The thing is, Ken isn't a PR person. He isn't a CEO or a president. Ken is an engineer and if you hung around them, you'd realize they are on some whole other shit. They don't think in terms of what is probable but what is possible. What is possibile is rarely achieved. I mean hell, what evidence, read the Shigeru Miyamoto quote on the back of a Gamecube box sometime. Then tell me that fourth dimension rant was uniquely insane.

lol. *yawn*. That "SDF" shit is so, so tired. As if people who stick by their Xbox 360's aren't the same way (and all over Joystiq..) shall we call them the "MDF"? Seriously.. different people like their respective consoles. we all spend a lot of time playing the games/systems we spend so much money on and love to love, but there's no reason to attack others for feeling the same way. It's immature at this point, why can't we simply have an adult discussion about the facts, and if you aren't mature enough to do so, back away from the computer.

And it could also do with the fact that Sony Defense Force isn't actually ran by Sony fans. Started by Sony fans, yeah. But then the Wii60tards basically bombed the site until all the respectable members left. Once it was completely husked, it was taken over pretty much as a parody site meant to openly mock the Sony fanbase.
Is it sad that I know this or sadder still that I had to have these events explained to me when I said I was ashamed to have something in common with the site contributors? Even I couldn't see past the parody there and considered it a sad, sad movement until someone told me it was a parody.

I wouldn't say it was ever on life support
If the PS3 was on life support, the GameCube was DOA
This is like the comment that the PS3 became "relevant" again. It was always relevant, and it was always there
It just seems like needless exaggeration to me.

Well stated. I think there was a moment where a lot of devs almost jumped ship because of the pains of the architecture. The success of Blu-ray and increase in sales brought it back in addition to more experience with the platform.
Poor Cube.. I agree that it would be DoA if PS3 was on life support.

Actually, Gamecube was pretty much DOA. Nintendo expected to sell 50 million by 2005... look how well that turned out. In fact, Gamecube's launch in Japan was such an abysmal failure, Yamauchi actually tried to blame 9/11. Think about that for a sec. A game console launches with two games, lacking Mario which was intrumental to N64s launch, and it is poorly received, and Nintendo of Japan blames Al Qaeda...
Nintendo managed to turn the cube around certainly, but it lost momentum out the gate and never really recovered. Sony placed pressure on their biggest threat, Xbox, by forcing a price drop Xbox's first E3 on the market. Gamecube was pretty much locking up their old N64 consumers though.

Thats a good point bringing up gamecube. That just reminded me that even Nintendo had some unsuccessful system for a while (Vitual Boy, N64, gamecube) and still stuck in the game to now be on top again.
So even if PS3 does not live up to Sony's expectations, they still have a chance of making a come back on one of their next systems. And you never know when PS3 might get a sudden surge (like PSP did recently, im sure you remember how last year everyone said it was dead). Sony has been in this business for a long time and one stumble will not stop them from continuing.
Microsot, however, has a history of giving up on their products (who remembers that phone/email integration back in the day?) So if next Xbox console does not do as well as MS expects, there is no doubt that the console gaming department will get shut down.

Funny you should mention phone/email integration. Guess what? I just read this week that Microsoft now has several phone/email integration products, including a new "PBX in a box" that's being sold by Costco and integrates nicely with Exchange.
As I said a while ago when the PS3 was down, it would be foolish to count Sony out. Similarly, it's wishful thinking to believe that Microsoft will bow out of a large profitable market with inroads to other potentially large profitable markets without going the distance, especially when Microsoft has a reputation for being tenacious to get what it wants.

I think a little humility is exactly what Sony needs to be taken seriously. Early on, the PS3 was in pretty sad shape but all you could hear from Sony was how awesome their giant enemy crabs were. It's good to see they're dropping that attitude.

"Sonys approach is the best"? Really? No great games and a new unwanted by most DVD format shoved at you? That's cool, you're a fanboy obviously. Now as far as knocking the "FPS heavy" 360 I have to call BS. Somebody above pointed out all the "just wait until..." games coming out on the PS3 are FPSs. So you're bashing the 360 for having too many FPSs and waiting WAY TOO PATIENTLY for the unproving FPSs to come to the PS3? What the fucks it going to be people? By the time the PS3 comes into it's own it will be PS4 time and then you can say "At least Killzone 2 will be backwards compatible when it comes out in 2014!"

chemical-electric reactions ... oh vay!
Something like that in a plastic form factor that could be rolled up like a poster and brought anywhere would be *incredible*
At this point it seems destined for smaller applications like a next gen lighter PSP, cell phones and MP3 players.
The thing that seems to be hurting Sony is that they are a giant electronics maker. they really crammed a lot of functionality into the PS3 and it seems all most people wanted was a cheap, powerful gaming rig.
I like the more bang for my buck!

So, the Gamecube and N64, which made money and recouped its cost for Nintendo within its first year or so are failures? Every businessman I know of will laugh in your face at that comment. Even Nintendo's enemies in the corporate world would not dare make that statement.
Do not equate lower selling numbers (compared to the competition) with failure. When one goes to business school one learns that the number one objective of any company is to make money so they can continue to stay in business. The direction a company takes to reach that goal is different, in the cases of Nintendo and Sony (at least a division of Sony) it is through the sale of video game consoles and related merchandise. Nintendo, while having a lower profile in the last decade, has continually released products that have made it money. Like it or hate it, almost all Nintendo products have made the company money.
The Virtual Boy is a different story but we all know that was a failure.
