We realize that with
yesterday's announcement of "
Beyond Good & Evil 2," some folks may have tragically missed out on the first entry in the series. We've put together a quick list of places where those not familiar to the series can get the game and meet up with Jade, Pey'j and -- our favorite personal assistant -- Segundo.
- Steam (PC) -- $10
- GameTap (PC) -- $1 for the first month, $10 after that.
- GameFly (Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube) -- Various rental plan prices, but currently copies are subject to availability.
- GameStop -- Currently, we can only find the somewhat dodgy PS2 version available online for $8. Check your local shop and you may get very lucky.
Those who find a GameCube version can rely on the Wii's backwards compatibility to play the game, and PS3 owners can pop in the PS2 game if their
systems support BC. The Xbox 360 currently does not offer backwards compatibility for the Xbox version of
BG&E. We're sure there are more corners of the internet to find Jade & Co., but it appears that $10 is what you're likely to pay.

If anyone lives in Baltimore, I just saw a GCN copy in the local GameStop today...
Ironhead @ May 29th 2008 1:10PM
Fellow Baltimorian here, which Gamestop?
Tiptup300 @ May 29th 2008 3:26PM
Where not to find Beyond Good & Evil:
- Xbox Live Marketplace
Yourself @ May 29th 2008 4:03PM
Sorry Ironhead, forgot I made this post. Charles Village was the one where I say it. Used, of course.
Ken Shammy @ May 29th 2008 1:08PM
Is it backwards compatible on the 360?
xFenixKnightx @ May 29th 2008 1:12PM
"The Xbox 360 currently does not offer backwards compatibility for the Xbox version of BG&E."
Reading the story before you post...is a good thing :)
Ken Shammy @ May 29th 2008 1:16PM
XD My bad. My article skimming powers aren't as great without my morning coffee.
Obie @ May 29th 2008 1:20PM
Its shameful that the 360 can't play this game.

Thank you!
Man, how is Barbie's Horse Adventures BC and not BG&E :/
Draco Basileus @ May 29th 2008 1:27PM
People need to keep pressing Microsoft to make this title BC.
And get to work on Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath while they're at it.
DangerMouse @ May 29th 2008 1:53PM
isn't BC for the 360 finished. I remember reading an article here that said Microsoft's not working on the backwards compatibility anymore. I might be wrong, but i wouldn't hold your breath waiting for it.
NATO_Duke @ May 29th 2008 3:07PM
Danger, I seem to recall the stopped making games BC too.
Draco Basileus @ May 29th 2008 3:10PM
Microsoft acknowledged that they were slowing efforts on BC titles, but I don't think they outright closed the door on more updates. I bet that if they received enough pressure they could make something happen.
Ethan @ May 30th 2008 10:02AM
There's a few Ubi games that play that use the same engine. It can't be that much work, right?
goboColossus (LIVE, PSN - gobopop) @ May 29th 2008 1:09PM
http://www.gamequestdirect.com has new, sealed copies for all three systems. 19/20 for GCN and PS2, 30 for Xbox.
GCN version box states it requires 20 blocks of memory to play, though it actually requires upwards of 50-55. Just a forewarning.
TheFreak @ May 29th 2008 1:35PM
I just checked the site and it said the GCN and XBox versions are out of stock.
Gehodra @ May 29th 2008 1:10PM
Who doesn't know the series though? It's on practically every "amazing games that no one plays" list.
Evil Closet Monkey @ May 29th 2008 1:26PM
It was released at the same time as Prince of Persia, as well as a few other big names. UbiSoft decided to put their advertisement dollars behind Prince of Persia and people just didn't learn about this game until it was gone.
loof @ May 29th 2008 1:28PM
Perhaps it's the "that no one plays" part that's holding it back.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ May 29th 2008 2:10PM
Who doesn't know the series though?
People who don't go on gaming sites?
Shagittarius @ May 29th 2008 3:02PM
This would have to be my number 1 over-rated game of all time. THis game plays like a freeroaming Pokeman Snap with an incredebly bad combat engine. Character design is horrifying, and the graphics weren't even on par for that gen.
This is one that the gaming community constantly holds up that I just don't get at all.
t_m @ May 30th 2008 1:13AM
@shag:
huh? Its essentially Zelda with an awesome sci-fi storyline (and a great combination of simple fun and more complex issues). I wouldn't say its over-rated at all.
playwhutyalike @ May 29th 2008 1:11PM
Segundo?! I left my wallet there. Or was it El Segundo?
Shimrra @ May 29th 2008 1:14PM
The few GS/Ebgames I am near have many copies of this game for both PS2 and Xbox. I have to see if I can find the GC version. I think after this announcement you will see 360 coming up with a XBL version sometime soon.
NukeAssault @ May 29th 2008 1:20PM
10 bucks steam? Sounds like a deal!
Nicolas Redfern @ May 30th 2008 8:02AM
Only in the US, I was about to buy it, realised that Ubisoft are too dumb to sell it to me in the UK, and instead visited a site called the Pirate Bay. Nice one Ubisoft, you just saved me £5!
Obie @ May 29th 2008 1:21PM
Maybe the game should come out as a retro classic download on XBL, make it 10 bucks and you have a deal!
Princess Skittles @ May 29th 2008 1:22PM
On Gamestop's website, seach for Beyond Good & Evil and then click on the SHOW BACKORDERED PRODUCTS button, it'll show the GameCube and Xbox versions, punch in your zip code and you'll bound to find a copy fairly easily.
Alistair @ May 29th 2008 1:28PM
D'oh! Never knew you could search local Gamestop stock online. It would have saved me a fair bit of hassle recently looking for a couple of relatively hard to find games. I was bitching and moaning all the while about the 'fact' that there was no way to check store availability online!
Oh well, I've added the GCN BG&E to my Goozex request list.
chez @ May 29th 2008 1:25PM
So the Wii is the best console to play this on and Steam has it readily available.
F1 @ May 29th 2008 1:25PM
It wouldn't surprise me to find this game on Market place in a few days.
Evil Closet Monkey @ May 29th 2008 1:25PM
I used to have the PC version, but loaned it to a friend years ago and never got it back (thankfully, I also have the XBox version).
What I'd like to know though, was this ever ported to the Mac or does anyone have experience running the PC version through virtualization?
I'd run out and pick it up again without hesitation if I knew I could play it without dusting off the XBox.
moo083 @ May 29th 2008 4:25PM
No Mac version, sorry. Well, you could always run it in Steam in bootcamp. As for parallels or VMWare, that should work since its a pretty old game, but I can't vouch for it.

I'm telling you guys, this will be the best $10 purchase you'll make! It's pretty common at Gamestops here in Dallas, especially on the PS2.
BlackFreefall @ May 29th 2008 1:30PM
Check out Ebay/Amazon/Half.Ebay...
Hot$auce_Magik @ May 29th 2008 1:32PM
I picked my copy up a couple months ago at a circuit city outlet for like $2.83. It was for PC so they must have had a dick load of them in some back room and just shipped em all here. I believe there were quite a few at the time. None now though, I've been back multiple times since...
nightmare452 @ May 29th 2008 1:33PM
Thank you Joystiq, you saved me the trouble of doing all this 'research' myself. Now if you could do this with Zone of the Enders series, we are set.
At 10$, its a steal, I have the Xbox version, so I need a GC or PS version now...
cheeto blue @ May 29th 2008 1:34PM
I just got a new copy for PS2 on Amazon for $19.43 after shipping and everything... i would check Amazon if i were you people...
it's funny, i woke up this morning and said "I need to play that game because i never have..." I checked my local Gamecreazy / Gamestops which neither had... so i went online to find that joystiq was right their with me in my quest of finding a copy... I love this site...
GaryM @ May 29th 2008 1:34PM
You can play this on GameTap for free also.
Not that it's worth it.
Phillip @ May 29th 2008 1:35PM
If you have texture flickering, slow fps in water areas, or audio sync issues, check out this gamespot thread:
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/adventure/beyondgoodevil/show_msgs.php?topic_id=m-1-43131982&pid=561436
You can change find the settings changer app in "Steam\SteamApps\Common\Beyond Good and Evil\". I forget exactly what the exe is called.
The other thing I read was: "save early, often, and in multiple slots!"
Lane5slacker @ May 29th 2008 1:36PM
Be weary if you have Vista, there is a lot of graphical glitches. It's definitely playable but you have to fiddle with the settings launcher. Under Advanced Settings, uncheck HW Vertex Processing and W Buffer. This takes care of sum but not all problems.
Brian @ May 29th 2008 3:20PM
The original Windows CD version also cannot be installed if you run Vista x64 or XP x64 as the TAGES copy protection fails during installation and it unceremoniously aborts nukes the installed files, leaving you dazed and confused as to what actually just happened.
No idea if the Steam version is compatible with 64-bit Windows, anyone have any luck?
Fadobo @ May 29th 2008 1:37PM
In european countries (dont know about the us) its in one of Ubisoft "Gold Games" collections. For about 20 bucks I guess you get 10 games. Beyond good and evil, Raven Shield, Splinter cell, XIII, PoP Sands of Time, Pirates of the Caribbean (the good seadogs one) and more. got it for a few years and cant recommend it highly enough...
jsutcliffe @ May 29th 2008 1:38PM
Silly. The real answer is "in my games library at home," and it should be the same for all of you! Get to it.
Cyro @ May 29th 2008 1:40PM
Is it worth buying? I missed this one, maybe I should give it a try. But, can someone first please tell me what type of game this is?
why not the LS2LS7? @ May 29th 2008 1:44PM
At that price, it is very worth buying. It has flaws (unlike what you might read), so don't get your expectations over the top though.
It's a heck of a lot better than Rez, and people bought a lot of that at about the same price.
Shagittarius @ May 29th 2008 3:08PM
If you really have nothing to play right now, go ahead and pick it up for cheap, its an average game at best, I don't get what all the hubub is about.
Sean @ May 29th 2008 4:08PM
I've got it for the ps2 (picked it up for $5 at bookmans). I just couldn't get into it. If I wanted to run around taking photos of stuff, I'd play Dead Rising or Fatal Frame.
Maybe one of these days I'll get around to giving it another shot. Then again, I've got a lot of other games begging for attention.
