Over at GameDaily, analyst group DFC Intelligence has made a few observations regarding recent trends in the video game industry, and has a prediction for the result of the current-generation "console wars." According to DFC, the Nintendo Wii will ultimately secure its first place position, with the PS3 overtaking the Xbox 360 in 2009 for a strong second-place showing.
In terms of longevity, DFC believes that by 2012 the Playstation 3 will surpass the Wii in terms of software sales (no doubt assuming a staying power similar to the console's little brother, the PS2). They also predict that the slowed economy in North America will actually benefit video game sales, as high gas prices encourage consumers to stay home and play games, rather than going out. Several other interesting tidbits and predictions can be found in their full report.

Cue the analyst idiocy. Man it gets hard to wade through comments on an article like this :P
I could care less about the predictions. Saying PS3 software sales will eclipse Wii software sales in 2012?? I guess that would be impressive, but who effing cares? This kind of crap always devolves into a bunch of people pointlessly bickering about which system has better games, or games worth playing. Which is utterly subjective. Arguing about it is asinine. I've seen plenty of 'Wii having no games' comments, which is comical being that used to be the knock on PS3. Each system has plenty of games each person may or may not care for, I'm sure tons of (insert console here) owners have no problem playing games ONLY on that console. Yeesh. Otherwise if you're like me, your gaming habits as to what you play may go like this, in no certain order:
DS, 360, Wii, DS, DS, DS, 360, Wii, 360, 360, 360, Wii, Wii, DS, and sooo onnnnnn. Once I get a PSP or PS3 you can sprinkle some of that in too.
As far as the last contention that higher gas prices = higher videogame sales because people are staying in? That's great and all, but I will posit that higher gas prices = people building more treeforts than ever before.

1/2008: "LOOK AT THEM THAR NUMBARS! This is the year of the Playstation 3!"
5/2008: "Yep! Any day now... The year of the Playstation 3 will start and the rivers will flow with chocolate milk!"
1/2016: "WE DID IT! WE OUTSOLD THE 360! IT'S THE YEAR OF THE PLAYSTATION 3!!!"
Call me a retard, but does it even matter anymore? Even if the PS3 overtakes the 360, which I don't see that happening before the next Xbox is released, then what would happen? Devs will stil make games, the 360 will still be a money maker for MS, and the PS3 will still be adding shit that has nothing todo with gaming itself. Analysts need to STFU and fast. I'm starting to think all these idiots have Sony stock and want to see a nice return on it before dieing of old age, so they keep pushing the PS3, trying to make the dead horse walk. *By no means am I saying the PS3 is dead, but it's useless to try to push sells of a console but throwing your weight around.*
On that note, i'm going to play PS3 UT3, then some 360 COD4. Add me on XBL: TheRealLameDuck. I don't have a PSN name since it's not technoloy my PS3.

People can claim "PS3 WILL WIN IN THE END!" all they want, until I see any sort of logical reasoning it's all wishful thinking. Here are a few that I hear all the time on every message board/ blog I visit:
"The PS1 and PS2 sold well, the PS3 has to as well!"- So many things wrong with this, I'm not going to even bother explaining it.
"MGS4, FF13, *insert another overhyped game* will save the system!"- Yea, just like Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time and Star Fox 64 saved the N64...While I am thinking about it, notice how the announcement of "AAA" exclusives slowed down to a near complete halt over the last 6-8 months? It's like developers don't want to develop exclusives for it anymore, which doesn't bold well for the Sony dominance that people wish for(Nintendo can't have a monopoly, nor can't Microsoft, but Sony having one is A-Okay!)
"Wii is a fad, it will stop selling, not like it counts anyway, it isn't next gen!"- The bitterness in this one makes it my all time favorite one. Yes, dismiss the actual winner just because you don't want to accept defeat, it worked so well when you lost the girl of your dreams to someone else!
I could go on, but the point has been made. Until I see actual proof as to how the PS3 will magically turn things around to the point of winning I will continue to laugh it off as people not wanting Nintendo to succeed.

It sounds like a religious promise of heaven. "In heaven, where justice prevails, the PS3 will win!"
But until we get this generation up there, we will just play Wii and 360.
Although, the world WILL start ending in 2009 and completely shut down in 2012. But not before we all move into the alternative universe of WiiHD and software xbox.

With no backwards compatible PS3s in production you can't count on all the PS2s converting to PS3s.. in fact a lot of the PS2 owners probably bought a Wii..

Is it wrong of me to really not give a crap as to who wins and who loses. I know its blatantly un-American of me, but I really dont.

I will always acknowledge the Playstation 2's supremacy but the PS3 I still doubt. I used to be a Playstation fanboy. Even though I had an Xbox original, my PS library of games was much bigger. Now in this generation I've been staying away from Playstation, I own a 360 because I don't believe the PS3 is "game-reliable" enough to my liking. The last few exclusives have been dissapointing and most multiplatform games are terrible on PS3 (DMC4's 30 minute install, Haze, Orange Box's terrible performance issues).
When it comes to the console war rankings, they said GTA IV would help the PS3 surpass the 360 in 2008. Turns out 360 GTA IV sales are dominating the PS3 sales. Are analysts just changing the year of the PS3's spremacy to cover the fact that they were wrong? The 360 is the best all around console, it has an awesome online service (even though it isn't free). You can play online anytime, download any game related goodies, demos, independant games, old goodies, movies and shows. I mean wow! Playstation still hasn't delivered their PSHome and no one can say if it is going to be as good as XBoxLive and XBoxLiveMarketPlace. I have serious doubts about the PS3 and sincerely it makes me feel bad because, theoretically, the PS3 was supposed to be very promising and it has yet to deliver anything worthwhile.

This analysis is based on worldwide sales; everyone saying that the 360 will dominate and continue to dominate is thinking only of the Americas. The PS3 is already overtaking the 360 everywhere else, and at a quick enough pace that it is easily possible that the PS3 will overtake the 360 worldwide by 2009. That doesn't mean that the PS3 will ever outsell the 360 in the Americas though.
To everyone saying "who cares who is number one:" These analysts are actually targeting investors, not gamers. These reports are for people thinking of investing into Sony or MS, since gaming is becoming a big industry. To the fanboys, it doesn't really matter, since all the consoles are doing well enough that you'll get good games regardless of your console of choice.

Seriously,no sane person should care, whether the 360,wii or PS3 win this console war.
You buy a games console for entertainment and fun,it shouldn't matter to you if your console isn't selling the best as long you are enjoying your purchase.
Grow up fanboys

Dunno if its wrong of me to think this but, with most of the people saying that "It doesn't matter who wins this 'war'.." are you guys upset that right now it isn't Sony? I mean, not ALL of you guys that are saying that (because I know a couple of intelligent individuals here) but for the rest?... Really think about that for a bit.
