Metareview -- Quake Wars vs. Quake Wars
"A Tale of Two (different) Ports" has reached its (anti-) climactic conclusion, as Enemy Territory: Quake Wars was released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this week. Development of the console ports was fractured between two different studios, and when we checked in on the games six weeks ago, Underground Development's PS3 version was lagging behind -- yet refused to be delayed. And so, broken and stuttering, the port pushed on, crossing the finish line (into the retail market) hand in hand with its Xbox 360 counterpart. A tie then? Clearly not:
- VideoGamer: "Although Quake Wars on PC had a long development, it still looked great when PC gamers finally got hold of it last year. On Xbox 360 this look has been ported overly pretty much intact and, although not top of its class, Quake Wars still looks like it fits on Microsoft's console. On PS3 it's a different story altogether -- the game is simply less attractive, with fewer effects, rougher edges and a less consistent frame rate. Although minor visual differences between console games are normal, here there's a pretty big gap, with the Xbox 360 game [80/100] having a level of polish that the PS3 version [70/100] is sorely missing. PS3 owners even have to sit through an eight-minute install before they can begin playing, and this doesn't seem to help the game load any faster than the 360 version." [PS3 review; Xbox 360 review]
- Cheat Code Central: "What was really weird is we were given the debug code for the 360 and the full retail copy for the PS3, but the shuttering occurred far more often on the PS3 than it did on the 360 ... The biggest differences between the PS3 [66/100] and Xbox 360 [76/100] versions are found in the menu interface and online matching. Both versions are well organized, but I'll have to give the nod to the 360 once again, as the 360 version's interface is far more accessible. I did like being able to choose from a list of available matches on the PS3 though ... Another big difference between versions is the quality of the voice chat; the PS3 produces some terrible echoes and painfully distorted feedback." [PS3 review; Xbox 360 review]
- IGN: "See, unlike the Xbox 360 version [61/100], the PS3 rendition [53/100] of Quake Wars' greatest failing isn't the structure that was built under the fairly uninspired gameplay. Instead, this Quake Wars falls short because of its core gameplay and the total lack of fluidity that it brings to the table ... While it does have a lot to do with the quality of your server, the gameplay experience can be totally ruined if the map is crowded with frenetic action and a few lacking connection. We didn't have the same problem while trying to join a game on Xbox 360." [PS3 review; Xbox 360 review]

So.....
The games sucks?
GenBanks @ May 30th 2008 7:37PM
At least on ps3/x360 ... I have the pc version and it's quite fun and got good reviews, although I haven't played it much (tf2/cod4/dod:s/aoc/wow/wic/coh ftw)

I rented the game at Blockbuster. An hour later I change it for another game....
And left to Best Buy to buy it. A lot of fun. Single player is just against bots, but the bots work excellent, it really feels like you are online. (I could believe it, so I had to unplug my cable just to make sure !!)
I'm enjoying it thus far (360 version). Its a shame there is actually a difference between the version.
Jouten @ May 31st 2008 4:58AM
"So.....
The games sucks?"
Indeed. Everyone loses, too bad PS3 gets a double dose of undeserving bad news. Don't blame the PS3, blame the devs. These devs need to find a different career other than game development.
Negativecool @ May 30th 2008 7:05PM
*game* sucks...:(
cc123 @ May 30th 2008 7:11PM
You had it right the first time.
One sucks more than the other though.
dark_inchworm @ May 30th 2008 8:36PM
cc123: No, he didn't quite have it right. Games don't sucks.
Well, maybe in a Metalocalypse they would...

A comparison of the two games is kind of worthless, if they weren't ported by the same people.
We are all aware that with the right or wrong team, PS3 games can look good, or like shit.

gamerprophet @ May 30th 2008 8:48PM
Sony games are always shit.
AoE @ May 30th 2008 9:45PM
Really? Why is the comparison worthless just because there are two different companies doing the porting? It's supposed to be the same game with the same content. This is a shocking revelation I know, but believe it or not there are a lot of people with both a 360 and a PS3... don't you think a comparison might be useful for them? It might, oh... I dunno, help them choose which platform to get the game for...
Vcize @ May 31st 2008 1:15AM
I think the whole point of the comparison is that they were ported by two different companies. They've never done a metacritic for the two systems on a game that was ported by the same people.
This isn't meant to be a 360 vs. PS3 console thing, it's just a way for people interested in this particular game to choose which system to get it on as they are more different from each other than most multi-plat games.
Eggy @ May 30th 2008 7:07PM
It was boring and pretty crappy on the PC as well. Haze is probably a better buy for PS3 owners.
Nate @ May 30th 2008 9:43PM
Which is saying a lot
MONTONERO @ Jun 2nd 2008 8:26AM
PC version rocks, check the reviews.
It is one of the best(looking) online PC games out there.
Slayer @ May 30th 2008 7:07PM
I've played on the pc. It was cool for the first few minutes. After that, It got really old really fast.
J.Goodwin @ May 30th 2008 7:11PM
Another choice if you're in for an uninspired FPS would be Unreal Tourney 3, which is the number one traded in PS3 game at my local games retailer (CEX, they rock, even though they're British).
At least you can get that one used for cheap.
Haggard @ May 30th 2008 7:16PM
Weird, I'm British but I've never seen a CEX shop, even though wikipedia confirms that they are indeed based here.
J.Goodwin @ May 30th 2008 7:24PM
Their website seems to indicate that they're more or less all over the place in England and Northern Ireland.
I was pretty shocked to find that they were British, given that they rock, and have a shop in Downtown Crossing. I certainly didn't expect to find prices in UKP on their website.
Benny @ May 30th 2008 7:34PM
"I was shocked to find that they were British, given that they rock"
Dude, we ALL rock.
Haggard @ May 30th 2008 9:28PM
Hmm, there's apparently one about five miles from my house.. you live and learn I guess.
But yeah, stop assuming that nothing from Britain can rock! We invented heavy metal!
J.Goodwin @ May 30th 2008 9:29PM
Yes, but we invented Spinal Tap :D
Skunk Ape @ May 31st 2008 12:12AM
Without Britain, there wouldnt be Iron Maiden, so I certainly thing you guys rock.
chez @ May 31st 2008 2:31AM
We've got 2 CEX's in my city, 1 near my girlfriends place too. They're shit and good at the same time. In December they were selling 2nd hand Wii's for £300 and 2nd hand DS Lites for £180. That's like PS3 and PSP prices. Could have been a pricing mistake.
But Monster Hunter Freedom for £8? Hot stuff baby!
Oh and QW isn't that hot. The PC version was okay but I can't imagine this being better on consoles.
GenBanks @ May 31st 2008 8:09AM
Loads of CEX's, there's one on Tottenham Court Road.
DangerMouse @ May 30th 2008 7:14PM
It's poop. I picked up the PC version for 13 dollars the other day. What a waste.
Jacksons @ May 30th 2008 7:17PM
I wasn't impressed, either.
name123 @ May 30th 2008 7:15PM
Terrible idea, terrible game, terrible companies.
Halo Wars will be just as bad. Spin-off games are just as bad movie based games. It's all quick-buck garbage.
Mr.ESC @ May 30th 2008 7:25PM
Actually the guys behind Age of Empires are doing Halo wars. The game could be like a weak version of Starcraft which isn't that bad but it won't appeal the general halo player.
DangerMouse @ May 30th 2008 7:39PM
I think expanding on the quake storyline was a good decision (id doesn't have much, other than hexen and doom), but it doesn't do the game any justice when the 2 latter ones are ass. I love Quake 2, but it was a time before fast paced FPS's and storylines had mingled together like they do now. Then comes along Quake 4, and it's extremely mediocre. Just the whole artistic direction and generic storyline was disappointing. It seems like they went through a lot of work to get decent voice acting done, too.
I had high hopes for quake wars, except it took too long to come out and the gameplay was a couple generations old. Had it come out 9-12 months earlier, it would've done well. It felt just like Enemy Territory (which makes sense), a game i hated. That kind of gameplay was fine back in 2003, but so much has changed since then. I guess they thought they could keep the 5-10 year old game mechanics while dropping in vehicles and give it a new facelift.
I hope id does well with Doom 4 and Rage, if that's still in production. I'd still like to see them come back to the forefront with another hit.
Nate @ May 30th 2008 9:44PM
I'm sorry... did you just put "quake" and "storyline" in the same sentence? I'm not sure I understand...
Mr.ESC @ May 30th 2008 7:24PM
Well only true fanboys can argue about this.
"The Ps3 version sucks Lol"
"Both versions suck".
"Yeah but yours more than mine lol".
I really wanted this game to be good,I really wanted to buy it.

The difference is you would have said solely to elicit a response and be a smug little fart about it ...
cc123 is probably my favorite poster of Joystiq because he is always dead on, facts based and is intelligent ...
There is no doubt in my mind that you would have blamed it on the PS3 and made some lame ass joke with a smiley face at the end ... Thats the difference ... His opinion counts where as anything you say about the PS3 is invalid because your such a Wii60 homer and PS3 basher ...
I don't mind you personally and I actually find our e-mail's back and forth fun and entertaining ... If you could just drop the Joystiq image and be yourself a lot of other people would probably not loathe you so much ... But I guess even bad attention is enough attention sometimes
Holler!
I still think MGS 4 will outsell Wii Fit world wide for one week of sales but I am not going to bet on it like we did the GTA IV vs MK Wii (which looks like I lost) ...
You have to tell me how to gift you a Wii Ware game because I have no idea how to do it ... If you want a game or the points ... LMK via e-mail or on here
Peace homey :p

Yeah sadly I don’t use my Steam account since I can't play TF2 on my PC anymore. Weird I installed an update for my graphic accelerator and since then every time I use TF2 it crashes.
I need a new computer or something. I could give you my xbox360 gamertag tho’.I have TF2 for the xbox 360.
Oh yeah and naco is like something stream, something vulgaris.
