Rumor: PS3 Firmware 2.4 adding in-game XMB, trophies

After all of the fuzzy promises, teasing, and schoolyard taunts, rumor has it that the PlayStation 3 may soon be getting a number of long overdue upgrades, from trophies (read: achievements) to the hotly demanded in-game XMB, all as part of the console's upcoming firmware 2.4.

Originally reported by videogaming247, we followed up with our own sources who, while not wanting to be named, likewise confirmed the rumor. However, even if true, the timing of the impending update remains a mystery, much like the Bermuda Triangle, crop circles, and Home.

I was thinking the same thing. Honestly, trophies should be at the bottom of their list right now since A) XMB should be their main focus, B) Trophies(accomplishments, whatever) are Home integrated, and who the hell knows when that's gonna come out, and C) then PS fanboys would have to stop complaining about how much they don't care about xbots and their stupid e-peens. The last one might just be too much for the community to bear.

Hi, I'm mister anti-achievement. You may have seen me bitch about people measuring their e-peens on here.

I don't really care who can see my trophies (achievements), I play games for me.

However, GTA IV shows another side of the problem. The guys at Rockstar didn't move the achievements over to the PS3 at all. Whatever they were tied to simply has no reward at all now. So, if on the Xbox 360 you get in a cop car, check the 10 most wanted and then take them all down, it says "achievement unlocked blah blah". On the PS3 version, you get the last wanted guy and you get cricketschirping.mp3.

We need trophies on PS3 simply so developers don't drop the ball like that. I don't care if anyone else can see my trophies, but I don't want personal reward features dropping out of PS3 games like happened with GTA IV.

Trophies are indeed part of home. But how's it gonna look when Home comes out without any games that have tropies coded into them. Put them in now so when Home is released there are many games that will have it

Trophies are going to REALLY get the gameplay exploits going. (see the Live gamerscore/achievements) Not that I really payattension to what anyone else has compared to what I have..Home will be cool just to see what games my friends play, but I already know because they are really my friends - who I have actually hung out with - in person - at thier REAL Homes.

Just get me in game XMB, I hate bailing from a game for messages.

Home and the XMB are two independent things. They don't affect each other.

I don't think you're following. If you want to pull up an in-game dashboard/blade type thing while in the middle of a multiplayer game, the game still keeps going. It's not going to pause the game everytime one of the 16 people in the room feel like sending a message or checking an invite or changing an mp3.

And if it lags/freezes moving back and forth from the game and the xmb believe me, you are going to get frustrated very quickly.

The 360 already does that... or, at least, the blade itself lags. I've opened the the blade many times during games and it often doesn't open smoothly. It will often stutter and lag when both opening and closing. There was a while there a year os so ago when it actually locked myg game up a few times, but that issue seemed to get fixed after one of the updates.

NOOOOOOO!!!! For the love of GOD don't give us trophies. I'm don't want to become an achievement whore like ever other XBOX360 user. I kind of like just enjoying my games myself and not worrying about getting through an entire game using one bullet. Achievements are something I'm GLAD I don't have. What I think would be cool is allowing you to use everything on the xmb in-game. meaning that if you're stuck on a level and you haven't saved in a while you could just fir up the browser and go to gamefaqs or wikicheats or ign

I would be very happy if trophies came about in 2.4. Cause right now we'll have to wait for Home for them and Home keeps slipping farther and farther over the horizon.

didnt Sony already announce that an update including In Game XMB would release in early June anyway? and then Home was slated for around November i thought. i think i read that here before.

anyway, i will welcome both features though the only one i really want is a video playlist (and i say this on every PS3 feature rumor thread). once we get a video playlist, ill upgrade my hard drive, buy my dinovo mini, and move all my videos to it to make my PS3 the media center its supposed to be.

TBH achievements arent that big of a deal for me. It has to be a game I really, really like for me to want to chase down any achievements.
XMB, however, is a true "next gen" feature.

As soon as ps3 gets it, since you will have that and rumble, I will be happy to welcome ps3 owners to the next generation. :P
