Sony: 80GB PS3 Motorstorm bundle discontinued

Sony has just confirmed to Joystiq that the 80GB PlayStation 3 SKU, bundled with Motorstorm, is no longer being supplied to retailers. "Retailers aren't getting any new inventory of the 80GB Motorstorm bundle," said a carefully worded statement issued by Sony.

This doesn't mean the 80GB model is out of production, merely that the focus is switching to the forthcoming 80GB bundle that features a copy of Metal Gear Solid 4 and a DualShock 3 (not be confused with the limited-edition "Gun Metal Gray" bundle available exclusively through Konami's website). ~~We've sent a follow-up request to Sony asking for the official street date for the 80GB MGS4 bundle and will update if and when we hear back.~~ Update: The 80GB MGS4 bundle is conveniently scheduled for release on June 12.

These will still be using the older chips, not the newer ones the 40gb uses for cooler and quieter operation correct?

Given that the smaller chips save them money, I'd be surprised if it used the larger ones.

It would also mean having two different manufacturing processes going in parallel. Extra costs and complications with no benefit at all. I'm sure these will be 65nm, maybe with some other small changes to the internals as well.

That's assuming they're all newly manufactured, which I'd guess they must be. They've had ample time to sell off all the old ones, after all.

Oh, and one more thing. I've got a hunch that part of the reason they introduced the new bundle was to smoothly transition to the 65nm 80gb. It lets them capitalize on the value of the new model while avoiding the clusterfuck of the 360's 3-different-models-with-the-same-name-and-the-same-price on the shelves at the same time.

Also I'll point out that it isn't a 360 and there was never really a problem with the ps 3 being too loud or overheating anyway, so it doesn't make a hell of a lot of difference.

To date, there have been 7 PS3 SKUs. 1 20GB, 2 40GB, 1 60GB and 3 80GB.

All of them have different features and different controllers, games, etc. Just because ONE is on the market doesn't mean it's confusing as hell, at least the 360 was consistent.

If it weren't for 6 months of Blu-Ray enjoyment at this point, I'd be freaking jealous. MGS4 and a Dual Shock 3? Meh. Blows Motorstorm out of the water. Then again, I only got the 80gb Motorstorm bundle because I wanted backwards compatibility, and the 60gb had been discontinued. Not to mention that I got a 100 discount.

Someone needs to discount the dual shock 3...I want one...but...50 bucks for a freaking controller? Insane.

I want a LE MGS4 Bundle but I won't be around for the MGS4 release. I’ll be busy in a conference in Boston.

I don't know if I should buy a Ps3 in the U.S yet I bought my PSP in the U.S and its flawless yet I'm worried about the guarantee.

I don't think this was a bundle a year ago.

It wasn't a year ago, but this is old news. We knew by January or February that the stores weren't getting shipments anymore, and they were already hard to find shortly after that. Is this really the first time Sony has acknowledged it?

The GunMetal Grey is actually a certain 'metal' cover I think...Not just a grey paint job.

But what holds me back from buying one is that it is a 40g...

At least when I go to GameStop in my cardboard box I will be able to pick up a Limited Edition.

I haven't seen the motorstorm bundle in a long time. I thought they discontinued it. Where was it still being sold at in the US?

a LITTLE late for this press release sony! they were gone in February and i had to settle for a 40gb, and i just bought a slim PS2 for MGS2-3 thanks, brilliant PR.

Hello January 2008!

Anyhoo, does anyone know if the MGS4 80 gig bundle will be around for a while or is it a one time thing?

;p Well, i just got a 20GB... so i have no worries at all about this.

Does anyone know if this will last for very long? I was hoping to get a this 80 GB bundle w/ MGS4 for my birthday in July. I'm wondering if this is a short time thing or if Sony is going to keep this bundle around for a while.

It will not be sold out forever if it does get sold out...It is going to replace the Old bundle and be around as long and as frequent as the Motorstorm bundle...no worries...You should be able to buy it by then.

My guess is that this is likely a long term (at least for the next 5 months) strategy. The game is one of the biggest lures to the PS3 platform and this bundle has been successfull in getting me to set aside some cash for May 12.

....I mean...eh em...Only if a store has it on them, But the chances may not be so great...I have only seen a few of them in stores and I am sure they are not continuing to produce them. Best to get it now or roll the dice and wait till July.

Just as a heads up: from what I have been hearing the MGS4 Bundle(regular 80g) is going to be very limited at the store level. Maybe even as limited as the the Gunmetal.

Except that these have been discontinued and out of stock at most retailers for about 4 months now. It's nice that Sony finally confirmed the obvious to you guys though.

I heard here (http://www.expotv.com/MotorStorm/36-oTq click on imagine's review) that the game only looks good on HUGE screens (the one in the review is huge). My TV is only about 29", would this game not look good on smaller screens?
