Those on active virtual duty in Call of Duty 4 have seen combat in all manner of locales during their tours -- though earlier this year, their theater of operations saw a major expansion with the "Variety" map pack, allowing them to get their war on in four new exotic, terrorist-rich locations. Unfortunately, these lush warzones were only available to those playing the game's console iterations, and devout WASD-ers were left out of the new territories.
Fear not, mousegrabbers, your day has come -- or rather, it is coming on June 5, according to Infinity Ward figurehead fourzerotwo. As expected from a map pack that's been available on other formats for nearly two months, the pack will be free to download on PC thanks to a sponsorship from NVIDIA. Little has changed for the PC versions of the four maps, though we find it regrettable that "Chinatown" is now known as "NVIDIAtown" and the Spetsnaz have been renamed the "GeForce Freedom Fighters".

This is pure PR.
IW couldn't give us the maps for free without pissing off console users. They couldn't attempt to charge for them without pissing off PC gamers, who realize that this kind of stuff should be given as an incentive to buy future titles, who would refuse to buy it, pirate it, and maybe pirate the next COD for good measure.

Yeah, not very good PR for Activision Blizzard or Infinity Ward however. (My suspicion is AB refused to let IW release the content)
Definitely not going to get the next Call of Duty because of this, and the fact after 3 games (That count, don't get me started on the Call of Treyarch games) this franchise is not going to improve.

I guess they couldn't figure out a way to make us PC gamers pay for maps (they said it was "logistics").

What ever the maps are not sponsored and if they are by very little money. That's just so console players can't complain. Do you really think the money Nvidia paid even remotely compares to the money they got from the DLC?
Do you really fucking think that they could have kept PC users from getting those maps once released whether they were free or not?
Pathetic. I hate greed. Those maps fucking sucked anyway. In fact almost all the maps suck in that game they need to open up custom maps like UT3.

I guess they couldn't find a viable way to charge PC gamers in time. Besides, PC gamers usually get maps for free, so i doubt that charging the consumer would've been successful.

I expected this to happen anyways. Even though I play online games the 360, I never pay for any extra content. This includes maps, guns, etc... because I know they will eventually come free (halo) Especially hate it when companies decide to release a game with a small amount of shitty maps (halo 3) and then charge you $10 for 3 maps. They'll come free anyways eventually and I laugh at those suckers who actually pay for it. Then I realize that those who are paying for it are just ruining the future of gaming, by convincing the companies to release half assed games and make you pay extra to "complete" the experience.

Well according to Bungie those Legendary maps are never going free. Whether you believe them or not is a different story, they also said Halo 2 would never go to the PC. In either case those maps are actually good, I'm glad I waited on the Heroic DLC and bought the Legendary DLC because the Legendary maps fricking own - Ghost Town is unbelievable and the 2 others are remakes of classics.

Pretty much already explained it, but since your retarded and need it twice. They tried to make it seem like their was a reason to put it out for FREE. You think there was a delay cause they have difficulty coding for PC? Wheres your brains at? Thats what you call PR spinning the truth.

Volomon, I often wonder where people's brains are at when they can't figure out the difference between "there" and "their" and "your" and "you're" Oh, the sweet irony.

I am really, really glad that these maps are coming to PC, Creek was CRYING OUT for a PC port because that map is just a HEAT WAVE on the console if you know what I mean.
Shame they aren't actually making it nvidiatown (read the link), it would make more sense (assuming the thing was covered with nVidia logos rather) than half-assed Chinese theming of a French-architectured town.
But seriously, this is good news - COD4 rocks on the PC, much more competitive than the console version and yes PC gamers get 64-player big Hardcore Headquarters AND Hardcore Sabotage, FTW!! Oh and 64-player Hardcore FFA on Shipment on the PC is NUTS!!!!
