Call of Duty 4 maps coming to PC June 5
Those on active virtual duty in Call of Duty 4 have seen combat in all manner of locales during their tours -- though earlier this year, their theater of operations saw a major expansion with the "Variety" map pack, allowing them to get their war on in four new exotic, terrorist-rich locations. Unfortunately, these lush warzones were only available to those playing the game's console iterations, and devout WASD-ers were left out of the new territories.
Fear not, mousegrabbers, your day has come -- or rather, it is coming on June 5, according to Infinity Ward figurehead fourzerotwo. As expected from a map pack that's been available on other formats for nearly two months, the pack will be free to download on PC thanks to a sponsorship from NVIDIA. Little has changed for the PC versions of the four maps, though we find it regrettable that "Chinatown" is now known as "NVIDIAtown" and the Spetsnaz have been renamed the "GeForce Freedom Fighters".

mousegrabbers?
DangerMouse @ May 31st 2008 2:51PM
Hell yes.
The3rdNuisance @ May 31st 2008 2:46PM
NVIDIA just got some respect, and someone at IW or AB just lost quite a bit from me.
GreyFox @ May 31st 2008 3:52PM
Hell yes. It's good to see we're still getting the free content and if it isn't by the developer it's at least from good sponsorship deals.
Jeff @ May 31st 2008 4:48PM
This is pure PR.
IW couldn't give us the maps for free without pissing off console users. They couldn't attempt to charge for them without pissing off PC gamers, who realize that this kind of stuff should be given as an incentive to buy future titles, who would refuse to buy it, pirate it, and maybe pirate the next COD for good measure.
The3rdNuisance @ May 31st 2008 5:18PM
Yeah, not very good PR for Activision Blizzard or Infinity Ward however. (My suspicion is AB refused to let IW release the content)
Definitely not going to get the next Call of Duty because of this, and the fact after 3 games (That count, don't get me started on the Call of Treyarch games) this franchise is not going to improve.
Obie @ May 31st 2008 6:01PM
I think Jeff nailed it.
I will let this slide IW, but lets hope they don't keep screwing their fans over like Bungie.
Jettic @ May 31st 2008 6:13PM
Shut up Nuisance, you and I both know your going to get the next COD4 =P
Steve @ May 31st 2008 2:51PM
I guess they couldn't figure out a way to make us PC gamers pay for maps (they said it was "logistics").
macssauk @ May 31st 2008 7:43PM
Steve is right^^^^
Volomon @ May 31st 2008 2:52PM
What ever the maps are not sponsored and if they are by very little money. That's just so console players can't complain. Do you really think the money Nvidia paid even remotely compares to the money they got from the DLC?
Do you really fucking think that they could have kept PC users from getting those maps once released whether they were free or not?
Pathetic. I hate greed. Those maps fucking sucked anyway. In fact almost all the maps suck in that game they need to open up custom maps like UT3.
Volomon @ May 31st 2008 2:53PM
Ohya thats the only reason they were put in a late as well so they could "tax" the suckers first. KNOWLEDGE IS FREE!
Haggard @ May 31st 2008 2:56PM
CoD4 does have complete custom map support on the PC - even if they didn't release them, someone could have just put them together using the editor tbh.
DangerMouse @ May 31st 2008 2:58PM
I guess they couldn't find a viable way to charge PC gamers in time. Besides, PC gamers usually get maps for free, so i doubt that charging the consumer would've been successful.
Vladdyboy @ May 31st 2008 3:22PM
I expected this to happen anyways. Even though I play online games the 360, I never pay for any extra content. This includes maps, guns, etc... because I know they will eventually come free (halo) Especially hate it when companies decide to release a game with a small amount of shitty maps (halo 3) and then charge you $10 for 3 maps. They'll come free anyways eventually and I laugh at those suckers who actually pay for it. Then I realize that those who are paying for it are just ruining the future of gaming, by convincing the companies to release half assed games and make you pay extra to "complete" the experience.
wickedpheonix @ May 31st 2008 10:32PM
Well according to Bungie those Legendary maps are never going free. Whether you believe them or not is a different story, they also said Halo 2 would never go to the PC. In either case those maps are actually good, I'm glad I waited on the Heroic DLC and bought the Legendary DLC because the Legendary maps fricking own - Ghost Town is unbelievable and the 2 others are remakes of classics.
Billy @ May 31st 2008 11:53PM
I laughed at every sucker who bought Halo 3. What a horrible game.
Scout Rush @ May 31st 2008 3:29PM
HEll yes! I love cod4 on pc. great community and my favorite version of the game.
ModusOperandi @ May 31st 2008 3:36PM
So wait, nVidia likes the Communists?
(The Spetsnaz in the game use the hammer and sickle as their symbol and want the Soviet Union back.)
dark_inchworm @ May 31st 2008 3:39PM
NVIDAtown r u serous???
Neebs @ May 31st 2008 3:56PM
no
dark_inchworm @ May 31st 2008 3:59PM
*commences with eye rolling*
dark_inchworm @ May 31st 2008 4:00PM
Reply system:
1 part code
3 parts fail

Sam @ May 31st 2008 4:36PM
So when will it be free for consoles? I'm still waiting...
GaryM @ May 31st 2008 4:49PM
The way it's meant to be played!
HALODEITY @ May 31st 2008 5:13PM
nvdiatown? seriously...
Zeus @ May 31st 2008 5:15PM
When do we get the map editor?
The3rdNuisance @ May 31st 2008 5:21PM
Map editor's been out for a while. Longer than the game actually, just Quake 3 Radiant with some CoD4 specific extras.
Unless you're talking about a map editor for the console version... then you're going to be in for quite a long wait.
Dirtyboy @ May 31st 2008 5:41PM
Gee maybe now they have time they can fix the server browser...
XGM @ May 31st 2008 5:41PM
About fu**ing time is all I got to say...
macssauk @ May 31st 2008 7:40PM
Ok explain this to me retards how this is PR:
How would the digital rights management work with PC? Think about it for a minute.
Volomon @ May 31st 2008 8:55PM
Pretty much already explained it, but since your retarded and need it twice. They tried to make it seem like their was a reason to put it out for FREE. You think there was a delay cause they have difficulty coding for PC? Wheres your brains at? Thats what you call PR spinning the truth.
konajinx @ May 31st 2008 11:25PM
Volomon, I often wonder where people's brains are at when they can't figure out the difference between "there" and "their" and "your" and "you're" Oh, the sweet irony.
wickedpheonix @ May 31st 2008 10:37PM
I am really, really glad that these maps are coming to PC, Creek was CRYING OUT for a PC port because that map is just a HEAT WAVE on the console if you know what I mean.
Shame they aren't actually making it nvidiatown (read the link), it would make more sense (assuming the thing was covered with nVidia logos rather) than half-assed Chinese theming of a French-architectured town.
But seriously, this is good news - COD4 rocks on the PC, much more competitive than the console version and yes PC gamers get 64-player big Hardcore Headquarters AND Hardcore Sabotage, FTW!! Oh and 64-player Hardcore FFA on Shipment on the PC is NUTS!!!!
wickedpheonix @ May 31st 2008 10:37PM
well if the servers don't crash from the load that is :P
JaKa (Because 666 gives a wrong impression!) @ Jun 1st 2008 8:38AM
"regrettable that "Chinatown" is now known as "NVIDIAtown" and the Spetsnaz have been renamed the "GeForce Freedom Fighters"."
Are they actually serious? My sarcasm detector is a little bit off.
