Resident Evil 5 trailer whets our appetite for 'zombie' destruction
160
As promised yesterday, GameTrailers recently dropped their debut preview for Resident Evil 5. For those yet to run an anticipatory pointer over that quivering play button, the trailer heralds the return of the third-person view present in the franchise's last installment, features familiar parasites who recently and irrevocably wrecked the shop of a small European village, and introduces the game's obligatory female accomplice -- though the new femme fatale appears to be able to hold her own a bit better than the president's daughter. Controversial imagery or no, our excitement for Capcom's newest head-buster is thick enough to drizzle over pancakes, and as infectious as that rascally T-Virus.

This game is offensive to Zombies such as myself... also, we prefer to be called "Undead Americans". Please, everyone try to be more sensitive.

I dont understand the big debate about racism.... there in Africa so the ppl are black! end of story!
Anyways i cannot wait for this game, RE4 is my favourite single player game of all time and im pleased that they have stuck with a similar(if not identical) style of play

I'm really looking forward to buying this game, just as i did when the new nightwish album was gonna be released!
I also want to put my hands on the older games, so if anyone has the PAL versions of Resi 0, 1(remake), 2 or 3 for Game Cube or PSone for sale, plz email me, cause so far i couldn't find them anywhere.
My email is
fiber_viper@yahoo.gr
thanks
p.s. Personaly i reckon that this whole 'racism' issue is a bunch of crap

It goes without saying that the whole thing makes me feel uncomfortable. I'm hoping that Capcom is going to be using this as a subtle social commentary about AIDS, genocide, the spectre of slavery and imperialism and the other social ills facing Africans, and how it's like a plague...
But I'm not expecting anything deeper than "General Mugabe, YOU'RE SMALL TIME".
And to all of the 12 year old kids who don't understand how this could be offensive, or how it's different from the Spaniards in RE4 need to take a history class. Back in the day, white people thought of blacks as subhuman beasts, as cattle (lol, ganados), with wild urges that needed to be suppressed for their own good, and later, eliminated. I'll chalk this one up to Capcom being a Japanese company, and what I'll assume is ignorance of how potentially offensive this looks. I loved RE4, and I might buy this one, but I couldn't do it with good conscience.
So what do you do about a game like that? I don't support censorship, so I wouldn't want to see it Bowlderized and have white/tan people being shot up instead, and I don't want it banned. But you can't just ignore it.

I have a few questions here? What is the definition of "RACISM"?
Well in my opinion- An individual who offended another individual(or anyone related to him/her, and insulted him/her physically or mentally) due to the difference of their skin's colour are racism.(hope i am close enuf)
Now back to the trailer, Chris Redfield(whose white) is shooting the infectants whose blacks(capcom said they aren't zombies) is because they are trying to kill him. Why would they wanna kill Chris, not because he is white(nor because they are savagers because they are black) but because they were infected by the virus. There's no need for any kind of textures to tell us that they're infected since it was shown on the trailers(around 1:39-1:46)that the poor black man was already infected by some sort of virus. Just because a race has black skins doesn't mean they're immune to the virus(a.k.a the equality that we speak of today) Chris is shooting them because he has to if he wants to survive. He kills them not because they're black but because he wants to stay alive(hence the issue of racism can't apply here). Anyone get offended is because they choosed to be, n this group is highly unlikely to be a gamer, maybe 1 or 2. If the very first thing that comes up to your head is"wow an extremely muscled white guy holding a gun shooting down a group of very skinny black angry peoples( infectants) who were holding knifes or axes, its gotta be racist", hate to say this to u but u are the one whos racist because u jumped straight to conclusion without even bothering to find out WHY would the white guy shoots a group of black peoples. If CAPCOM just hire some one whos black to "work on the team" just so to shut somebody up, that is no doubt racism and i just lost all my respects to CAPCOM.
In resident evil 4, a white guy shoot down a bunch of spanish ganados were absolutely fine. I never heard any Spaniards complain, hell they were too busy enjoying the game rather than pay attention to what colour/race that they were shooting down. When the enemies' skin changed to black, with the protagonist being white(has always been apart from resident evil:outbreak wher u get to choose n 1 of them was black), this racism issue floats to the surface again. Just because the white people's ancestor did something terrible to the black people doesn't mean its the same thing that the trailers showing. Another game like GTA: San Andreas and 50 cent, where u get to control a normal black person(not infected)to go around and kill white people is just fine, because its just a game and no white people complain about it. Again they were too busy enjoying game rather than paying attention to who they were killing. Of course there are also a lot of black people in the 2 games i just mentioned, because its in New York city. So would u rather see a lot of white people in an african country(yes the producer Jun Takeuchi has stated that they decided to use Africa, to show the birthplace on humanity, sounds very cool to me)??That wont make a lot of sense if u ask me. If CAPCOM decided to throw in a few white people in there so to shut someone's mouth, they are being racist n i have lost even more respect to CAPCOM.
Standing in a gamer's point of view, i simply see fun. Not because of i can use a white guy to kill a group of black infectants, but because i get to see the cool battle system of resident evil 5, has a deeper understanding of the story(when the game comes out n after i played it , obviously) and the graphic looks great and many more. I believe my view also stands for most gamers(who actually just wanna play a fun game). My friend whos black, his name is Samuel Lasis, he told me to shut my mouth when i asked him if he thinks this is racist, he even says he has to get this game when it comes out, probably the first one to wait outside the store!! I personally think its up to the gamers to decide whether this game is racist or not but not some politics representation or some parents. Why? because CAPCOM designed it for the gamers. If some gamers find it offensive then just save up your money n buy some other games u like, simple.
I strongly suggest we let go off the past, but that doesn't mean we have to ignore it completely. It also doesn't mean we have to nail it in in every possible cracks we see. Imagine educating the kids how badly the white peoples' ancestor used to treat black people n keep reminding them this fact(happens when somebody put it up,even in video game or angled it in as much as possible as we're seeing here),then when they see a group of black people on the streets, this is what they(a lot of them) will think "Oh no, its the black people, we better stay away from them because they might beat the crab outta us since our ancestors did something terrible to them", this is fear, not respect for each other. The worse is, this though is already racism itself. As a matter of fact, this racism problem still exists in almost any country, so instead of keep accusing a video game is being racist, i think we will much better off concentrate on solving the problem in REAL life rather than trying to find something about racism in a VIRTUAL world of a video game. If u showed the trailers to the africans(n explain to them what's going on in the game and tell them its just a game) I seriously think the people there are too busy worrying about foods, minding their kids, walk over 10 miles or more just to get some saturated filthy water etc. that they'll just tell u to F-0FF.
I do have to say a lot of people are misunderstanding N'Gai's statements. I think he simply says the trailers can easily flare up the"racism" issue to certain individual and CAPCOM should be more carefull with their trailers. So if CAPCOM put in some clear textures explaining exactly what the hell is going on, more people will understand their purpose behind the video game(which is to deliver innovative gameplay and shows off their crazy story), i definitely don't agree with everything(almost all of them) N'Gai says but he does have good eyes for pointing the whole thing out.

to all you morons that think this is racist.first of all i'm sure there are black people that work for ea sports who had something to do with making this game.thank god there not as shallow as you are.secondly its a "freakin" video game, being white i could'nt care less if it were whites being portrayed in the game.its people like you that cause problems in this world.and i would'nt be suprised if sharpton is offended after all he's the biggest racist of them all.for those of you that are offended you should be ashamed of yourself i know your grandparents would be. think of what they went through if they are still around i'm sure this would be the last thing they would be concerned about a video game!!!
