Wedbush Morgan analyst -- no, not that one -- Edward Woo uncovered some interesting news after sifting through an Activision SEC filing this week. According to the filing (via Gamespot), the company plans to launch Guitar Hero: Metallica in Fiscal 2009, which, for Activision, is anytime between now and March 31, 2009.
No other details are known about the game other than its existence. Will it be guitar-only or multi-instrumental a la the upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour? Regardless, we're guessing that long-awaited new single won't debut on Rock Band anymore.

too early to tell what it means. Metallica can license to whoever they want. Just because Activision asks for exclusivity, doesn't mean they get it.

I would like to respond to the black slash over “Ug I don’t like new games, I prefer downloadable content” and say, I can RENT a new game, there also can be new features in a new game and new achievements points. The difference between this and Rock Band DLC, if I wanted to buy 40 songs from Rock Band it would cost me $80 dollars and I would be playing that same Rock Band that I’m already sick of. There wouldn’t be any point to it other than play the songs once and play them with other people when they stop by. With a game like this there be a new career mode to play, I can rent it for $8 dollars or buy it for $60! Hey look 80>60>8 DCL is still the most expensive. I know you all have boners for Rock Band but it’s still run by EA (which I have no problem with, but the same people that whine about GH while about Madden and EA). Seriously, this crap is fine. You are a bunch of whiners, just don’t play that game if you don’t care, you don’t have to post a pissy comment over everything that you don’t like.

First of all your a fucking retard (black slash?). Second, you don't have to buy 80 songs on Rock Band. Now I might play this game if someone brings it over or I go to someones house, but I am not buying it or any other rhythm games (until Keyboard Hero). The genre more that likely peaked with Rock Band. The whole point blogging is to speak our minds regardless if you think its whining or not. I am sure it will go on to sell a shit load like present day Metallica albums do (but they haven't got my money since the black album)

So I’m a f***in’ retard for calling people that speak their mind whiners, but when I speak my mind I’m a f***in’ retard? Also I didn’t say you need to buy 80 songs in Rock Band, I was just pointing out if you bought 40 songs in Rock Band(approximately the number of songs in a rhythm game spinoff) it would cost $80. While I could rent a spinoff game $8 or Gamefly it or buy it and sell it back. Hence I don’t understand why people get their panties in a bunch over spinoff games. Mario has had more crap spin offs than anyone else and people don’t whine about him. The rhythm game genre lends itself the sequels with not too many changes save soundtrack, so I don’t see what the big deal is, every time I look at comments there is overwhelming irrational negativity that has little justification… dumbass.

Ok, I have a couple of points to add to this.
If you were to buy 40 songs in Rock Band in the style of a Metallica mega-pack, it wouldn't cost $80. As we have seen with the song packs and downloadable items it would be cheaper if you were to buy them all, than if you bought them separately. This is all pointless conjecture however, as there is no precedent for this, and they will probably never release that much volume as DLC at one time.
On to the matter in hand, this "spin off". My problem with it is that if you were to buy this game, which is guitar only (assuming it comes out before GH4, which I personally doubt), then you buy GH4 which is multi instrument, I would then want to play these songs with those extra instruments. Now, without making all of this game content DLC and then allowing you to download it in to GH4, I don't see a way of doing that with a guitar only disc.
That is the exact opposite of what I want from GH now. I want a new content structure that is similar to Rock Band, with weekly (if not longer) downloads available in small doses. I do not want a new game every 3 months, that only differs from the last in the songs on the disc. There will be no engine changes with these titles, probably no substantial change to the career mode or any other options from the previous main game, that being GH3.
Of course, all of this is assumption, but the long and short of it is that after reviewing all the possible outcomes of this "game", I don't want it.

Exclusives are going to kill rhythm games before the end of the decade.

Agreed...
Basically if the rhythm game wars get anymore out of hand, people are just going to drop them wholesale. Which is sad because it really is a genre which should have been able to stick around for many years (as if we should be worrying about if our Rock Band instruments will be Xbox 720/PS4 compatible). Sad part?
Activision will outspend EA for domination in this genre before running it into the ground. Remember when Tony Hawk was the best extreme sport game but not because it was the ONLY extreme skate game?

I'm not really sure where you got exclusive from. Harmonix announced last year that they already have the rights to release a lot of Metallica's back catalog as DLC.
The big difference is that with Rock Band, I will be able to purchase just the content I want (pre-Black Album), and won't be forced to buy a bunch of other content bundled on disc.

Rhythm games have been around for a long time, and they're not going anywhere any time soon...remember Parappa the Rapper? Simon?
What is eventually going to go by the wayside is the "fake plastic instruments" trend. At least they match her green plastic watering can...

What's the same between Metallica and a slinky?
A: They both used to be metal and its fun to push them down stairs.

FAIL. I would much rather have the option to buy Metallica (or any artist's) tracks a la carte as in Rock Band. Release a whole album, fine, but I'm not buying separate games for every big band. Suck my dick Activision!

I agree, I'd like to not buy any more Guitar Hero out of principle (Aerosmith will be the first game in the series I won't buy) but I've liked Metallica for ages, and hopefully the 'similar bands' included should be some quite good 80's thrash.
That said, I bet James personally ensures that there's no Megadeth on there :(

I dunno I heard they made up a few years ago and even send x-mas cards to each other every year. Doesn't sound like a big deal to outsiders who might not know the history, but that's a HUGE deal.

ugh, seriously? This better have multiple instrument support or they are just fucking stupid.
I'm so glad Harmonix isn't doing this 'LOL LETS PROMOTE A BAND' feature that activision is proudly touting. sure metallica more than anyone probably deserves to have a lot of music in these games, but there are so many other, better artists out there that deserve the attention more than metallica does.
imo it's better to have a game representing a lot of bands than focusing on one as well, but I'm just stupid I guess >_>
this should have just been dlc for gh4 bleh

Dear god, I'm trying to open up to World Tour as it is but this is making just hate Activision's handling of the GH franchise so much to the point I find it hard to buy any GH game now. Why can't they just do this is as DLC?

I really want to only support Harmonix and Rock Band, but just when you think you're out they pull you right back in. Damn Activision and their deep pockets!
But then again, they could always pull awful Metallica songs for this game. And that could be enough for me to skip this game all together. I don't want to play Invisible Kid.
