Nintendo: 100 WiiWare titles in development warp pipe
According to Nintendo of America's senior director of project development, Tom Prata, there are currently over 100 WiiWare titles in various stages of development. Speaking with IGN, Prata says there were no first-party titles for the WiiWare launch because the company wanted to showcase the diversity of WiiWare developers, from large publishers, like Square Enix, to smaller and indie developers.
The interview is actually more noteworthy for the lack of information Prata gave to some direct questions. He dodges whether there will be a hard drive in the near future for the Wii, or if Nintendo plans to lift the alleged 43MB size limit for WiiWare titles. He also wouldn't discuss which WiiWare titles have been the most popular. Prata did say, however, that consumers shouldn't hold their breath for WiiWare demos to become standard with available titles.

looks like shovelware isnt just for retail anymore...
Mr Khan @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:39PM
WiiWare efforts so far have been admirable. In some cases more worthwhile than full retail releases
I think the shovelware publishers know that the money is in getting people to pay full price. WiiWare should stay relatively clean of worthless trash. A lot of games that are shovelware would be fine as downloadable titles anyway
Mr Khan @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:42PM
I thought of a good example: Cooking Mama
That game probably would have done better as a WiiWare effort, i think. Seems fitting.
PojoMofo @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:45PM
im not putting on my SDF hat, but I will say that I have been kinda disappointed with the Wiiware title so far. Not to many that have me interested.
You are correct Mr Khan about them at least being creative and origianl, I hope that trend continues.
Maverick Saturn @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:39PM
:P Good either way, although quantity doesnt mean quality, how many of that 100 will be worth playing I wonder.
Maverick Saturn @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:39PM
But like Mr Khan says, so far so good.
Mr Khan @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:40PM
Shit, 43 MB?
Seems too low. N64 titles topped out at 64 MB (though admittedly few reached that lofty height, most stuck at 32 MB), so you would figure that they would have the largest WiiWare titles be equal to the largest VC titles
McWeen @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:46PM
I think the largest was RE2 for the N64.
Zertoss @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:42PM
Hey Nintendo, know how you can generate even more revenue off of WiiWare?
HARD DRIVE! It stores money!
samfish @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:01PM
I sure hope it's ensured by the FDIC.
Kye - Ludwig Defence Force @ Jun 2nd 2008 6:39PM
I think you just set Iwata's spider senses tingling.
K387 @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:43PM
But will they delist the ones that aren't selling and don't have a Metacritic score of 65% or higher?
I mean, I want to be able to buy Waggling Game of Doom whenever I want.
NOTE: This was a post of sarcasm.

Maverick Saturn @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:58PM
Lmao, maybe not
Nintendo, swim bitches! Swim through that sea of bad games to find the good ones! Swim dammit!
DonWii @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:45PM
So far, so good.
Shogan @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:46PM
I'm not supporting this service without more storage.
samfish @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:54PM
I am, but I'm forced to be VERY picky. I've only DL'd Lost Winds and that game is alright. Unless they release an HDD, any other game I download from them has to freakin' knock my socks off and then some.
McWeen @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:48PM
They really need a hard drive. Nintendo should just package it with some game that requires it if they are worried about sales. (Pokemon MMO or something similar to the PS2 harddrive)
Mr Khan @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:53PM
It's been said before that Nintendo has acknowledged the memory situation as an "issue," and is looking into it
Whether that will lead anywhere is another story entirely, but at least it allows me to hope that i will have the capability to buy as many of these games as i want. I'm with others who refuse to delete and re-download. Too many bad possibilities in that line of thinking, and i'm just opposed to it on principle.
samfish @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:56PM
samfish is putting on his Magic Hat (which he rescued from the evil Wolf in Catz 2) to predict that Nintendo will release a storage solution with Wii Music this year.
Pimliconite @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:52PM
From the article:
"IGN: We recently had to delete half the games and Channels on our systems to make room for two WiiWare titles. Lack of storage space has become a huge problem. What're your thoughts on this issue? Will Nintendo address it soon?
Tom Prata: Consumers have the option of either deleting the game and downloading it again for no additional Wii Points, or transferring the game from Wii to external SD memory card."
That's a 'no'. Maybe they are working on some storage addition/solution, but he didn't dodge any question about a hard drive. He just said no.

I thought WiiWare got off to a decent start, however the crappy shooter that came out today has me concerned. Please don't rehash dated games. There are enough shooters on the VC fer gadssakes.
DonWii @ Jun 2nd 2008 2:17PM
It's Ubisoft. What do you expect?
chez @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:28PM
Do want an update of Doom. Just give us the ability to look around and I'll buy. Hell I love Doom.
mr mobius @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:47PM
Lost Winds looks amazing. I'm confident that I could love the WiiWare given time and some VC points (900 so I can't get Lost Winds - I want it so badly!).
Isn't world of goo coming to WiiWare as well? If so it'll be a must buy for me.
Gavin @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:52PM
No quality control means most will be total crap.
Don't get your hopes up people.
Mike @ Jun 2nd 2008 2:33PM
Yup. 512MB is more then enough room for all of these titles.
Jacksons @ Jun 2nd 2008 2:57PM
I hope they're not saving a mass storage solution for E3 and expecting it to be a huge surprise. Just give us one already!
samfish @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:17PM
Actually, that would be the biggest surprise to me.
Everyone expects them to show Kid Icarus and Animal Crossing...but we have no idea if there'll EVER be an HDD still.
liquidninja @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:50PM
I'm definitely gonna get some WiiWare games if they make a Hard Drive. I bet they'll try to sell as a Wii Game peripheral like Wii Fit. "Wii Share"
Anyway I don't think they knew Downloads were gonna be so prevalent on their console so they played it safe and suck with 512MB of internal storage. Now just like the shortages they'll have to come out with a way to fix it and still make money.
Jimmy @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:07PM
Can anybody point me to any official info/interview as to whether or not WiiWare developers are going to be able to patch and/or update their games? There is obviously no technical limitation, so it was just be corporate or economic in nature...
BigD145 @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:30PM
I'll stick to my emulators. Old console games tend to be smaller and can be played longer, even with many short sittings. They also tend to cost less.
