Team Ninja head and creator of the landmark Dead or Alive fighting game series, Tomonobu Itagaki, has issued a statement announcing his resignation from long-time employer Tecmo. This news, first reported by 1UP, comes just as his latest creation, the Xbox 360 exclusive Ninja Gaiden 2, is due to hit US shelves.
In addition to resigning his position at the company – where he had a seat on the board of directors – Itagaki has announced his intention to sue Tecmo president Yoshimi Yasuda for 148 million yen (US$1.5m) in damages. Among the grievances listed in the statement are Yasuda's unwillingness to pay him bonuses promised for work on titles including Dead or Alive 4, and allegations that Yasuda "made demeaning remarks" about him to other Tecmo employees, which resulted in "significant emotional distress" and "worsening [of his] personal relationships and work environment."
Itagaki began his career at Tecmo as a graphics programmer. One of his earliest titles for the company was 1993's Tecmo Super Bowl for SNES. He later gained notoriety for his original fighting game creation, Dead or Alive, and was lauded with superstar-level recognition by Microsoft after they secured the exclusive rights to Dead or Alive 3 for the original Xbox's US launch.
In his statement, Itagaki confirmed that he will not be involved with any future Ninja Gaiden or Dead or Alive titles, as the rights to both franchises are retained by Tecmo. How Itagaki's departure will affect the future of either series will surely be at the forefront of gamers' minds, as well as those of Tecmo brass. We'll have more on this breaking story, including Tecmo's reaction, as it develops.

When did it become Hideo and Itagaki? Can't they both make good, no amazing but unrelated games? I mean seriously why is Hideo part of this conversation?
Anyways the reason Itagaki left is most likely because the president compensated his ability to lead his team. I mean maybe called him a drunkard or whatever but the point is he's leaving because he feels that he is no longer in controll of his projects/what his name is put on. I agree with "Not Me" on this one in that he probably takes pride in his work, even though i wouldn't go so far to assume that EVERYONE here flips burgers but most people don't get their name put on videogames and DEFIANTLY aren't as well known as he is so give the guy a break?

Well, maybe DOAX3 will be better. 1 was awesome. 2 was a near-unplayable piece of crap. DOA4 was good though. Couldn't give a crap less about the NG series though. At least not the modern remakes.

Sorry, Itagaki is not the brilliant game designer that you all make him out to be. DoA has been a mediocre, albeit fun fighting game, bringing nothing new ( boobs aside) the fighting genre ( AM2 single handedly brought 3D fighting with Virtua Fighter , Tekken with its crazy combos, Soul Caliber with its sword action, DoA was just something to pass the time;
Ninja Gaiden...Ok i will give him that on the 360, fun action packed but nothing really that redefines anything, nothing to call Itagaki a genius for, in fact i think out of all the game developers, hes like at the bottom of the list
