Developer Crytek recently gave fans of its FPS Crysis some bad news, confirming that it had not only abandoned work on a dedicated Linux server for the game, but that the shooter's forthcoming 1.3 update "almost certainly" won't be released.
Beyond stating that "there is a good reason," Crytek has offered little in the way of an explanation for its decision to abandon the expected updates, adding only that "...we hope you understand when you hear more about the reasons why in the very, very near future." The developer broke the news as part of a series of updates concerning its plans for Crysis, though considering the mood left in the wake of this latest offering, we're left wondering what exactly Crytek has planned for an encore ... killing kittens perhaps?

Finally, I played Crysis last saturday on a friend house... the games does looks impressive. But besides the impressive graphics, physics, etc. it's a very generic game.
There are better FPS on consoles.

I think people would beg to differ Fernando. I've played it as well and have seen my buddy playing it a lot also. Man it made me want to get a PC that can play that son bitch lol. I never got a generic vibe from it. To each his own I guess. So which FPS isn't generic to you? Metroid?

Metroid Prime is not a shoter. It has a first person perspective, but is more like an exploration puzzle-solving adventure.

I agree that it has "run of the mill" gameplay, though I know a couple of my friends who just saw the graphics and thought the game was the best game ever made.....some people just can't see past graphics to game play.........we call them "Casuals" in my circle.

Crysis has it's faults, but it is a great game. (Amazing) graphics aside, it has a decent plot, excellent level design, great voice acting and tons of super intense action. Fernando, please stop kidding yourself about console shooters.

Well, everyone has a definition of hardcore and casual. Almost everyone consider shoters hardcore, but sometimes I think they just associate the word hardcore with violence, blood and guns.
I jsut finished Tales of Phantasia, and I just started playing Persona FES. In my personal opinion, I found those games more hardcore than most shoters.

Metroid is a shooter. In fact, it has a whole lot of shooting. I don't think puzzles and large amounts back tracking change the fact that a huge chunk of the gameplay is shooting.
Also, Fernando just calls any game he doesn't like generic... especially shooters.

Check my posts: I have called generic to Haze (way before the reviews), TimeShift, Blacksite, and recently, Fracture.
I love Gears, Bioshock, Project Origin is looking, good, Fear, Condemned, etc...

I think you mean COD4. All other shooters are and will be measured to it. Case closed. Dude, get a clue.

Half agree. Crysis is a shit game. Great tech demo only then you realise you need a mega PC to run it so it's a shit tech demo too. Impressive to me would be something that's heavily optimised like the Source engine.
But better console FPS? I'd still rather play Crysis on a PC than endure a dual analogue FPS.

I don't want to be that guy that dislikes something that is extremely popular, but I gotta say: it just didn't happen for me.
It just seemed dull. Maybe my prejudice towards the genre is coming into play - it was my first FPS since Halo 2 - but after an hour of playing the game I thought: I've played this game, and half a dozen others, on my old Xbox. It just felt staid, you know. Why am I spending my time
Maybe I should give the game another go.

Although he did say next gen FPS's should look into getting IR pointer capabilities because of his MP3 experience.

Of course the Metroid Primes are shooters. Six years ago (wow!), Nintendo tried to generate hype for the series by pretending it was a revolutionary new genre. Blizzard tried to do the same thing with Warcraft 3; calling it a Role-Playing Strategy game. The odd thing is that while Blizzard's ability to control our minds is powerful, it didn't stick, yet Nintendo's "revolutionary new first-person adventure genre" somehow did.
I'm not telling anyone to stop liking the Primes even a little, just to at least stop foolishly placing them on a snooty, righteous pedestal when you wouldn't have if Nintendo didn't tell you to.
Not even The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was regarded as anything other than a shooter, and that had NPCs that gave you quests. If you have to call something an FPA, there are more adventure-y first-person games out there than the "tap A till your fingers bleed" Prime games anyway.

You didn't feel that way while playing the original Halo, huh? So bland. Already done. Of course you didn't get bored in Halo 2 with all of the backtracking. That kept you busy.
Dude. Try playing Half-life 2 or even The Darkness (way underrated) and tell me you feel the same. Call of Duty 4 takes a tired genre and totally refreshes it will amazing depth in in gameplay/graphics and the way the story directly involves the player (not to mention the multiplayer).

I played Metroid Prime through the Ice Boss guy (maybe 5 hours in? I don't really remember), and that game really seemed like a platform puzzler with shooting elements. There's way too much jumping and swinging and hitting bosses with one particular weapon for it to be a straight shooter. I remember wandering about for maybe half an hour without shooting anything, just trying to figure out the latest maze/puzzle bit.
If Metroid Prime is an FPS, then Twilight Princess is a fighting game.
I really enjoyed Crysis. I thought it was good, but nothing revolutionary. I can understand that if you've played scads of FPS titles, then Crysis may not have offered you much in terms of originality. That, and the game kind of goes to shit once the aliens show up.

my HD 3870 x2 can hardly run the demo of this game at 20fps average with everything on max, 1680x1050 native. I want better optimization with ATI and Nvidia cards before i even buy this game.
i may as well wait for the HD 4870 x2 or 9900 series to see if they can run Crysis at 50 or 60 fps at max settings.........ahh that i dream :D.

The max settings are essentially future proofing the game. At that high a res you should be setting things to medium... which still looks amazing. In a few years time come back to the game and be impressed by how well it holds up.
and co, if you insist on that resolution you will need to use low settings on your 8600, but thankfully Crysis is very playable on much weaker rigs.

I stopped playing because everytime I inserted the disc in my dvd drive, thanks to the "security features" the game disc uses, the dvd drive sounded like it was gonna be killed. (Known issue from Lite-On drives).
Other than that, I enjoyed the game, but I'd like to keep my DVD drive working for a bit longer.

Crytek has become such a bunch of whiners. What happened to their touted PC exclusive righteousness? If piracy is such a big problem for them (which I'm assuming will be the reasoning behind this), why don't they look into selling through different outlets, like Steam? Valve doesn't have these problems! Get on board Crytek, or do like every other developer does, consoles first...then PC.
Posted: Jun 3rd 2008 1:12PM Ricky Bango said
It's "as easy" to pirate Steam games, true. But i think a lot of people are far more likely to buy the game if they can do so right from their computer, as opposed to having to go out and get it. That's a huge part of why Steam is so successful and why there are so many publishers and devs getting their games onto Steam. Plus, imho, just having your games on Steam is a huge plus because of all the easy updating and being able to download the games onto any PC, including saved games and settings now with Cloud.
