Sony has again trumpeted intention to get its virtual world Home out the door this year, though precisely what state it will be in when players are eventually allowed to log on remains another issue entirely. Speaking to Wired, PSN senior director Susan Panico referred to Home's initial roll out as "similar to Gmail," calling the online initiative's presumably fall release an "open, working beta."
These comments have not exactly filled our heart containers with confidence. Google officially launched its email service in 2004, and now, some four years later, it's still in beta.

"Just wait till Home..."
No, seriously, wait. It's gonna be a while.

Well that waiting line it's moving faster than the one for Duke Nukem Forever.
I think the Duke Nukem Forever waiting line moved like 1/2 inch back in December of 2007.You should've seen it.

I got to admit I never understood quite what home was. I also never understood, why people wanted sony to rush it. Why not wait, home seems to be free, if I am not mistaken. And if it is as cool as explained by some why not just let them take their time. I mean if the experience is original and refreshing and they are charging you zilch let them develop it.
But then again seriously I do not know much about home and how long it has been developed and what was promised, I only remember seeing a story about somebody that worked for Xbox losing his marbles on sony of their promises about it.

So do I have to buy Crackdown to particpate in the beta? :P

As long as I don't have to buy zone of the enders I'm fine with that :P

the wait for home really gets annoying when i think of all those live users making custom clothes to sell and trade on the market place. especially that older lady who doesn't even play the games she just loves to make t-shirts for THUG.

What part of Thug T-shirts you don't understand Nate?

i was just thinking of that conference when the bald guy in the hoodie was talking about how on the 360, live would let players make thier own content and be able to sell them to others. if i remember right tony hawk was an example given as a game you would be able to use such an item

I'm glad that didn't actually happen.
Otherwise we'd be looking at 5 million people selling shirts with dicks on them.

Uhh, that wasn't your imagination J.Howlett. That did happen. Except it wasn't about the xbox 360 and live.
That was Phil Harrison talking about how the PS3 community in Home might be able to create their own customized content like clothing, designing their own home, etc.
So just wait, you might see 5 million t-shirts with dicks on them yet. Later this year in an open beta? Perhaps the open beta will allow them to add a anti-penis-clothing-filter before final launch :P

You know what this is...
1. The holidays will be packed with gaming goodness this year and they want to capatilize on it by having Home working with Home-aware games.
2. They are most-likly getting flack by others in the company, sponcers, or running out of money.
3. They want to shake this in the face of Nintendo and Microsoft.
I will bet you my golden left nut that this release will be buggy, full of nothing, have crappy servers, and will hardly be used by anyone over the age of 21.
It is SecondLife, minus the yiffing. If I can't yiff, I don't want it. *he types while wearing his tiger suit, drinking a bottle of chocolate milk* RAWR!

Sony just needs to stop talking about Home until the day they actually release the open beta. Because everytime they bring it up without actually telling us anything new it results in a the same fanboys beating the same dead horse they've been beating for quite a while now.

I'm looking forward to home, however I'm not convinced that the visual direction its taking is the smartest as it may conflict with many games. It might benefit from having a drastically unique style. One that sets it far apart from other gaming environments. Perhaps more of the thinking behind the Zone mode of WipEout Pure would help (would at least trim overall size and load).

It would be a wise move if the working part of the beta was the core experience of the service
I have a feeling that it won't be, however. That "working" means "you can connect to it," though no guarantees of smooth service
Otherwise, it's a solid idea. Get the core functionality out the door and you have time to develop the lesser functionalities and add them at leisure

When i was moving into my new apartment my ps3 was supposed to be the hardware that did everything while doing everything now all i can do is play as mr.belic in a more interactive "google earth" of new york. As an architect Home seemed promising... two years ago. They should probably focus more on alowing sony ericsons to connect to ps3s (bluetooth), and takes cues from the iphone, and the wii- redesigning the interface is the key to new a experience. GOD help us if the result of Home's release causes Apple and Nintendo to join forces (inevitable!).

Home got announced how long ago? I'm almost ready to pronounce this vaporware, we don't really see anything about it other than "it's coming, it's coming..."
