Joystiq impressions: Spyborgs (Wii)

It was with those fightin' words that Bionic Games designer Mike Stout started his Captivate 08 presentation of Spyborgs in Las Vegas this week. Though we've seen a couple of early stages and the same debut trailer as you, we're still not sure if the game's living up to the gauntlet being thrown down.
Gallery: Spyborgs (Wii)
Let us first just issue a few qualifiers. 1. What we saw was really early. 2. With any title that strives for humor, taking stuff out of context rarely works. 3. We're not exactly the target audience (sort of).
We're told that the game is being designed like a Saturday Morning cartoon, with the game representing a "season" of episodes. As for the roots of the game's humor, the words we keep hearing are "A.D.D." and "Adult Swim," if that gives you some idea of where they're coming from. (Though, admittedly, after seeing the demo, we'd been more inclined to namedrop some Nickelodeon shows than Squidbillies or Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law.)
So, with that out of the way, let's talk about the walkthrough.
Despite the tough talk about other games on the Wii, Spyborgs immediately presents to us like one of the many character-based action platformers on the system (like Ben 10, for example). Mind you, this title has one of the best cameras for this sort of thing we've seen, effortlessly keeping a great view of the heroes.
For the demo we saw, those heroes are Kinetic, an extreme sports junkie, and Bouncer, which you've probably seen described by trailers as a "death machine ... with attitude ... sort of." You're probably thinking that so far this reeks of character design by marketing committee, but ... no, actually there's no "but." We're right right there with you.
What's intriguing is that each character has their own specific actions that must be performed with the Wiimote and Nunchuk. For instance, the player controlling beefy Bouncer has to make punching motions to fight. Later, we see this put to further use when the same player has to pretend to bash a door down to ... well, to bash a door down.
Graphically, it looks like most other things on the Wii. It's cartoony and not super detailed. But it's so early we're not willing to knock it for that.
After battling a few enemies in the sewer level we're being shown, we're told that in order to enhance the "Saturday morning cartoon feel," the game will include commercials in the form of minigames smack dab in the middle of levels. The first we're shown is a take off on Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots with players imitating actions from Wii Boxing to battle each other.
The next one? Hmm, how to put this ... OK, so the second commercial we see forces the players to pretend to strum a banjo with the Wiimote and Nunchuk while two bionic, human-sized goldfish sit in a river of defecation and sing a country song about plumbing issues.
Still with us? Well then, you're probably totally going to buy Spyborgs. We believe there are only two sorts of people in this world: People who can own a game featuring bionic goldfish sitting in a river of defecation and those who can't.
We're told that the team wants these commercials to interrupt the gameplay every hour or so, just enough to keep things fresh but without being annoying. They're still not sure how many they'll be able to make before the game's planned 2009 release.
So, what's the verdict so far? Is this a game you should keep on your radar? Honestly, at this point, we just can't say. Because what we still can't seem to figure out (even after asking the developers directly) is what audience they're making the game for. It's got humor that some would consider mature, character designs that would appeal to kids and controls that are too early to put into either category.
When you make a game that's all over the place like that, it's either going to be a product for everyone or no one. You can probably guess which one Bionic Games says they're shooting for, but it's still far too early to say exactly which one they'll hit.

Well that's encouraging...

why did I get a wii for:-[
Fernando Rocker @ Jun 3rd 2008 11:52AM
I hope those are not the final graphics. Is not even close to what the Wii can do.
I want at least Mario Galaxy quality graphics.
PojoMofo @ Jun 3rd 2008 11:55AM
has got to be a very early build, looks like the animation models with like 2 levels of textures max, I bet they will be significantly better in the coming months
Fernando Rocker @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:04PM
You are right about the textures... Mario Galaxy is a last year game. Devs should be pushing the Wii like Nintendo.

Those textures look pretty low res to me. They're using the other affects you mentioned to make the game glow.
And chances are, Nintendo has more knowledge and more experience working on their own console, so they probably knows its limits better than anyone else.
Grog @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:22PM
It's still 480i/p, but that doesn't mean the game can't look beautiful.
Sir Fidlious Wong (Justin T. McElroy Memorial Burn of the Day Award) @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:39PM
For some reason, this is reminding me more along the lines of Ratchet & Clank in the initial art style or dare I even say it, Jak & Daxter. Overly simplified but the animation shown shows a hell of a lot of personality.
As for what the graphics should or should not be, Fernando, seriously.. shut up. What you have here is people from many established studios tackling the Wii with a personality based platformer without buying the license so they could just shovel shit out. In other words, this is a positive step for the system to even SEE something like this. If the graphics stay the way they are right now, I see no problems. It doesn't compete with Mario Galaxy in terms of rare graphics but of the few characters shown so far, they are showing a hell of a lot of personality. And frankly, if they up the detail or try to make it "extreme," they may lose that quality.
Co @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:41PM
Grog,
Talking like that will get you choked out around here.
Everybody knows this generation it's all about that 640p. Aint that right, Halo 3? What about you, GTA4?

*Fernando: "High resolution textures:"
I believe you mean multipass textures. IE, putting a texture on top of a texture. That's old hat, by about a decade, and definitely not "high resolution". Nintendo is infamous for cheaping out on memory.
Seriously, dude... the Nintendo community shouted for months that graphics didn't matter and the Wii was all about cheap dev costs. Now you want "at least" Mario Galaxy graphics? Oh yeah, any 3rd party developer can go up against Nintendo's flagship product.
Did it ever occur to you that Nintendo doesn't like to share low-level technical documentation with 3rd party developers, so they *can't* get anywhere close to what Nintendo does? That was a huge problem on the N64, and one of the reasons why it was very difficult writing software for that machine. I doubt much has changed over the years, especially based on Gamecube games I've played. Good art direction tends to mask those problems (like with Resident Evil 4), but they are still major limitations that take a lot of work, and big budgets, to overcome.
"At least" Mario Galaxy graphics. Wow, I've heard some real whoppers, but that one is pretty bad.
ck @ Jun 3rd 2008 11:56AM
Well, at least my expectations have been lowered. Maybe when it comes out I'll be able to play it and enjoy it due to these low expectations.
Noshino @ Jun 3rd 2008 11:57AM
Justin, you could have just said nothing and we would have been less confused about this title....
DangerMouse @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:00PM
It's looks pretty bland. At least if it doesn't sell well on the Wii, it can be ported to the PSP.
Nigeria @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:01PM
A bit off topic, but I'd like to see a sequel to Harvey Birdman. It was the very first game I've ever played that has actually managed to make me laugh - and not that pity laugh you do when you're watching clips of Kat Williams or Dane Cook, or the like. Harvey Birdman was a genuinely funny game and I loved it. But the chances of another game seem rather low.
As for this: I'm all for jokes about faeces, hell I supported the political party of prostitutes, rent boys, and coprophilia at the last London Mayoral elections, but the joke described just didn't sound funny to me. Or maybe it was the way you described it. Or maybe it was one of those jokes where you had to be there to get it.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:23PM
Watch the trailer in the previous thread. It's pretty funny.
JS Beckerist @ Jun 3rd 2008 1:14PM
I want a Squidbillies game. They could do a christmas style reindeer duck-hunt, a drinking game where the screen gets blurrier and blurrier until you find you're having sex with a spare tire... Oh man a game where Dan Halen takes over and you have to use your powers of ... well ... drinking and smoking pot to bring down "the man." ....... Oh man I'm drooling already!
Anni @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:04PM
You had me at "strum a banjo with the Wiimote and Nunchuk."
Kenology @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:05PM
Hmmmm... is this supposed to be the title that was more akin to Lost Planet that Svenson was talking about?
nastysquar3d @ Jun 3rd 2008 1:05PM
I don't think it is.
If you look at that interview the Capcom guy says we'll be hearing about it in a few "weeks". I think he would have said something completely different if he would have been talking about this game.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:12PM
You know what, this seems kind of interesting. I kind of like the whole saturday morning cartoon approach to it.
adam @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:16PM
Looks like the Shrek of the gaming world. Suitable for kids, but something I'm not afraid to put in and watch with friends.
Hopefully the humor sticks and the gameplay rules.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:25PM
"It's got humor that some would consider mature, character designs that would appeal to kids and controls that are too early to put into either category."
But remember, some of the best 90s cartoons featured extremely kiddish designed, yet contained a lot of adult humor. I think it'll be awesome if the game can appeal to both kids and adults.
Fernando Rocker @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:26PM
Like SpongeBob... I love the cartoons =p
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:29PM
I was thinking Animaniacs. Now that had some adult humor.

Mr.ESC @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:31PM
I believe Freakazoid, Megas XRL and Invader Zim appeal both. If you don’t like Invader Zim go f*ck yourself because it was that good.
I think this game is more like Cubix, anyone remembers that show?
Mr.ESC @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:32PM
I think Invader Zim was more dark but yeah Animaniacs is another perfect example.
playwhutyalike @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:38PM
I completely forgot how over the top Animaniacs were. Yeah, I watched that back in the puff-puff-pass days.
samfish @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:41PM
Wow, I never realized how good the animation in Animaniacs was. I went back and watch some episodes of Batman The Animated Series recently and it was so jerky, but that's really smooth.
Sir Fidlious Wong (Justin T. McElroy Memorial Burn of the Day Award) @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:55PM
Batman was jerky because Batman was higher detail. If you notice, the areas where he's really simplified look gorgeous to watch. This was the downfall of anime in the beginning, actually. And emphasis on detail rather than what would animate well. Animaniacs has an overly simplistic style plus the art styles do actually have a bit of an overlap between Batman, Animaniacs, and even Tiny Toons. You can tell there was some artist overlapping there.
But not everything in animaniacs holds up. There is a ton of frame recycling which can only be gotten away with BECAUSE of the style of show it was. Anytime Batman attempted it, it was really noticable.
Mr.ESC @ Jun 3rd 2008 1:11PM
I didn't know the guy with glasses had its own site,I just subscribed.Thank you for the link Vegeta stay over nine thousand!!
Mr Khan @ Jun 3rd 2008 5:02PM
A lot of cartoons conceived throughout the 90's have a timeless quality
(looks at avatar)
Mr.ESC @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:28PM
Since this is Capcom I'm sure the gameplay will be Solid but I doubt I'll buy it for myself. This is the stuff I would give to a nephew, son, little brother as a gift for their birthday and this is coming from guy that still likes Lego Mindstorms and Playmobil. Say what you want but nothing beats recreating the Spanish Inquisition with Playmobil.
CJLopez @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:29PM
'll just need to see a better version of this game, as they stated, this was something too early, well, 'll keep my hopes up and look forward to this game in the future. Lets just hope i'm not spoiled by HD by the next news of this game, 'll be buying PS3 this month for MGS4
knowthyself @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:56PM
Looks okay. Nothing really exciting. Mad World was much cooler. Not just cause of the gore either. The concept just was more interesting.
Mike @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:59PM
This trailer has successfully renewed my enthusiasm for expressing how badly I hate the Wii. Mmmm, nothing like a game full of generic Disney/Pixar reject characters complete with random interactive "commercials" to "keep things fresh." Co, if you're looking for someone to choke out, please let it be me right now.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jun 3rd 2008 2:33PM
Cause I'm sure a bunch of games featuring generic soldier characters or over sexualized females are so much better.
Mike @ Jun 3rd 2008 2:35PM
Nope, just as bad actually!
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 3rd 2008 3:20PM
I see what you mean and I can't see why more people don't complain about it like they do with the generic space marine argument. In fact, the kiddy look is far more prevalent in wii games (as in, almost every wii game) than the space marine FPS use in ps3/360 games.
Ridgecity @ Jun 3rd 2008 1:01PM
The same kind of stuff was said about Psychonauts, simple graphics and kiddie humor, and of course, the AAA game bombed. As long as the game mechanics work right, I'm getting it. I won't be letting early previews give me a bad image of a game anymore. First we want original stuff and when it comes out, wee simple don't want it.
maybe you should stick to Madden or Prince Of Persia 8...
Chilly Willy @ Jun 3rd 2008 1:42PM
I second this opinion a thousand fold. You ppl complain about so few new franchises and only sequals and then when an early preview comes out for a brand new ip that has some true potential you shoot it down emphatically. Keep an open mind until you see the final build.
Mike @ Jun 3rd 2008 2:57PM
True potential?! If completely generic art direction and character design that resembles a cross between Spykids and an Esurance commercial are enough to signify true potential, you're just helping perpetuate the stagnantly low standards of games as entertainment. I'm not judging this game yet since it's only just been unveiled, maybe it will have some redeeming qualities, who knows. Probably not.
Burnt Meatloaf @ Jun 4th 2008 6:24AM
Good advertising helps, too. The last few Rayman games didn't sell because they actually featured Rayman.
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 3rd 2008 1:37PM
PS2 graphics engine at use again? :(
Cyro @ Jun 3rd 2008 2:05PM
That game looks terrible.
Jacksons @ Jun 3rd 2008 2:06PM
Graphics look decent to me. Perhaps I've been neglecting my consoles for my PSP for a bit too long. I digress, it's nice to have at least one Wii game on the horizon that I'm remotely interested in.

I place +1 interwebs into your bag of holding, sir.
Lijik @ Jun 3rd 2008 3:45PM
The last game that I played that absolutely nailed the "Saturday Morning Cartoon: The Game" concept was Crash Twinsanity. If this game can live up to that, I'll buy it day 1.
Right now I'm cautiously excited.
Mr Khan @ Jun 3rd 2008 5:09PM
It seems to be a noble effort so far, and something that would fall right into my tastes as an Adult Swim addict, and a connoisseur of the kinds of cartoons that they are talking about
However, it just looks... bad. That early build is going to have to be glossed over quite a few times.
And i'd rather have the "commercials" occur in-between levels, or at least at checkpoints in levels, instead of on a set timer
