Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4 has just reached that coveted eighth digit in unit sales. The developer told CNET yesterday that the shooter had sold over 10 million units across all platforms. While unable to provide a breakdown of the figures, Infinity Ward said it had sold the best on Xbox 360.
According to the studio, it is one of "less than 10" games to reach the 10 million mark since 2000. Although we don't know for sure what those games are, our best guesses are The Sims, The Sims 2, World of Warcraft, a half dozen Nintendo DS games and Wii Play. As of January 2008, Halo 3 was at 8.1 million units sold worldwide. (It should be noted that the Call of Duty 4 has an advantage here by merit of the PC and PS3 versions.)
As for Call of Duty 5, Activision has still not confirmed which franchise regular is developing the game, be it Treyarch or Infinity Ward. Rumors suggest the former, but given COD4's success, we really hope IW gets to latch onto the series and keep hold.
Update: We just got word from Activision that the 10 million figure does not take into account the Mac and DS versions of the game.

That sucks Fenix, you're missing the best part of the CoD series, which is on PC. CoD1 with United Offensive expansion pack is the true beginning of the series and best part of the series until CoD4 came along. I would recommend picking it up on ebay and playing through, it's far better than BigRedOne, which was garbage. CoD3 was garbage too, but to each their own.

That was Turok Pojo. They decided to get rid of it before the game released though after lots of bad feedback on the interwebs.
I've never really noticed people playing that differently to get achievements online other than the occasional person apologizing for frag-tagging you in Gears.

Never understood the Treyarch bashers either.CoD3 and CoD:BRO were great and unlike IW games, actually had a decent story.
And while few people realise, Treyarch(Grey Matter) are the guys who made THPS2,RTCW and Die by a Sword. And these games were awesome.

I agree with Vcize its not a major difference for me to boycott it. I still love the crap out of it, especially when I'm finished with my achievements lol! But I do applaud IW for their no MP achievements in COD2 and 4.

Cod4 for me is the epitome of great scripted and short-burst of fun single player and the apex of great thought out multi-player. This is from someone that's been a pc and console gamer for 20 years now.
People that complain that the multiplayer is broken didn't quite figure out how to play the game. No, it's not realistic, but realistic games simply aren't fun. This game balances the camper vs anti-camper perfectly. In real life, the camper wins every time. The maps are extremely well thought out for both. In real life, that's never going to be the case.
Yeah, the guns could have been balanced a bit more. But, it makes sense that the good guns you get first to minimize the unfairness of beginners at low levels. There are still 5 - 10 guns that can compete with eachother and that's all you really need.

Of course this game sold well, more so than halo because it practically perfected the first person genre.

I mostly agree. To me it perfected the Multiplayer map. Almost all of the maps are extremely complicated in scope and detail (detail that actually affects the way you play the map) YET are extremely well thought out. Usually, you have to compromise between big and complicated and well balanced. This game, other than maybe 1 map, has both and then some.
The gernades have JUST enough range to take out a camper, the guns have JUST enough range to keep the snipers on their toes, yet give them an edge at key positions. Every spot on the map has JUST enough counter-spots to keep the game going and prevent campers from sitting on their butt and picking people off, etc, etc.
This game was tested to death and tweaked like no other. The maps are the same.

I dunno, there's something about CoD4 that I just don't like. I'll play about 2 matches and then just go back to Halo. I think I miss the little skirmishes you have in Halo when you encounter someone, CoD is more of a 'the moment I see the guy I pull the trigger' game, with whoever pulling the trigger first winning. Not my style.

Guilty:
In hardcore mode, yeah...mostly. Hardcore is a slower game and plays a little like r6 and the like. But in regular mode IW (ironically for your point) adopted the halo-style auto-reheal system. Cod4 I think takes it one step further because you can go prone and "seemingly" disappear instead of hide. You can also shoot through walls, so you're not relying 100 percent on a good grenade to finish off a hiding foe like in halo.
In COD4, unlike halo, you don't have to shoot the guy 4-8 times to kill them. One head shot will do.
In CoD4 if you get shot or get shot at, you have to make an instant decision whether to run or hide in cover.
To each their own of course, but your assessment of cod4 is pretty darn flawed...especially for a halo player. This game has an extreme amount of depth even though at first it may not appear. The same can be said for halo, too.

I think COD5 should be set during Reagan's invasion of Grenada. "Call of Duty 5 : 48 Hours of Boredom." Let's start an online petition.

Wow, so 10 million times $50-$60 equals....umm...a lot!
