As I stated earlier, it's a problem with the surge of 10s. Does MGS4 really deserve a perfect score? It is impossible to tell at this point given how many have been dumped on the market in the past two years by dozens of publications on dozens of games. Perfect scores were rare (stated before, Famitsu didn't even give one out in their first 12 years of existence) and actually held weight. Now, they're the new "this score is meaningless, go out and see if the game is actually any good". Meaning, don't buy, rent, the review is worthless. No point in taking a chance on a marketing ploy.

Because these days perfect scores smell less like the opinion of the publication and more like the opinion of the game publisher.

Obviously it's easy to complain about a review score without reading the text of the actual review let alone playing the game.

Also I'm getting the impression that people are forgetting that reviews tend to be someone's opinion, god forbid you do agree with it every now and then.

Although, not terribly much has been published about MGS4, judging from what's been published already, I think it's safe to say this game may actually *gasp* be good.

MGS4 does look pretty good, but I'm a bit skeptical of the "perfect score", especially given that they doled it out for Final Fantasy XII (PS2), and Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii)... seriously, WTF? FF12 was an overwrought exercise in friggin' ZOMG!GRINDING!PLOTZ!, and SSBB was fun for about 10 minutes...

I could make a game about going to the bathroom and it'd get a 10 from Famitsu, I'm not jealous or anything but Famitsu will give anything a 10.

wow, ok first off, they have only given 7 perfect scores in thier 22 years of existence.

secondly, Famitsu scores out of 40, so a 10/40 for your bathroom game DOES seem about right

8 perfect scores. 5 of them in the very near present. A perfect score from Famitsu doesn't mean jack anymore. It had weight when they gave it to Ocarina of Time since they never did it before, but now they have more perfect scores in the past 5 years than they had near perfect 39/40 in their first 12.

Lets not forget the score they gave Haze. not to mention that most of the other games on that list got some low reviews by other media outlets (not all of them) So I really won't trust it until I see some other reviews.

This actually makes me want to get a PS3. Too bad they lost their backcompat though, it'd be nice to pick up the MGS collection at the same time.

Or if you're based in Pal land then you don't get b/c unless you bought from the first batch. So if you don't have a PS3 now then you're completely f00ked on the b/c front.

Wondering if there's a PS2 emulator and if it would run well on my quad core.

It should be able to do software entirely. The 360 pulls it off and PS2 games are lesser beasts (tech wise) than Xbox games.

the 360 has the same basic pc build so its easier to do software emulation though there are some bugs with the games that do work. there are games that won't work because they were developed around limitations in the original xbox or they just want to sell a remake later. the ps3 has ps1 emulation no matter the model and limited software ps2 emulation in some. there used to be what amounted to be a ps2 inside the ps3 but they remove half of the hardware and subed it for software. to cut cost

The PS3 is region free so you just need one of those power conversion kits ... Or you could just pick up a PS2 on the cheap ... There are still plenty of places to buy 60 & 80 GB BC PS3's

I stopped caring about what's written in Famitsu when they gave Nintendogs a perfect 40/40, and this is from someone who grew up with Nintendo and actually bought the game for his DS.

The previous MGS games have all gotten good reviews from various magazines. Even if 40/40 is not accurate by Famitsu, it still indiciates that it is a game worth playing. I just find it funny that some ppl belittle the high scores of MGS4 given by Famitsu and compares it to the scores Famitsu gave to Lair and Haze. Yes, both Lair and Haze sucks and are given good scores by Famitsu. However, that doesn't automatically makes MGS4 a bad game just because Famitsu said the game is great; it isn't opposite day!

It is like some ppl on these boards have said in the past; Some ppl are going to assume perfect scores means a game is perfect, but in reality, there is always going to have some flaws with a game and ppl's opinions on a product will vary. Therefore, a perfect score should be taken with a grain of salt.

I wish some magazine just do a thumbs up or thumbs down appoarch like Elbert and Rogers even though I am sure ppl will mistaken two thumbs up as a perfect score, however.

It is sort of funny that some ppl who contend with reviews score are normally those who only owns a rival system or is madly in love with the freaking series to the point where they would give a 10/10 on a toilet paper roll with a their beloved videogame character on it.

I mean, I remember a lot of ppl went apeshit when next gave Crisis Core a 2 out of a 5. The reviewer had to make a follow up video explaining why he gave it the game a low score and made some interesting points about fanboys being so sensitive about review scores. He even mentioned how it is better for review magazines to have different scores rather than all of them giving the same score and opinion, hence defeating the purpose of mutliple reviews.

Regardless of what MGS4 gets from Famitsu or EGM, I am still buying the game. I bought and played MGS1, twin snakes, MGS2, and MGS2 substance. I also have gotten MGS3, but didn't play it until now since the sneaking ability sounded too complicated for me at the time.

The truth is these people you speak of have scoffed every perfect score along the way ... First it was because they were from official PSM ... Then the GamePro review was a total "MGS" fanboy tool ... Now Famitsu sucks balls ... These people are haters through and through ... This is personal to them

Who can trust these days? GS before the K&L fiasco gave Tony hawk a 10.

It seriously pisses me off when I don't see Grim Fandango or any Diablo game in a top 10 list.

There's something wrong with you. Don't you realize you can tickle a virtual dog's rectum with the stylus? I've bought a "generic hole" fleshlight for when I play it. A little duct tape goes a loooong way.

Perfect score should mean perfect game, and hence should never be given, otherwise we'll just end up with bunch of games with perfect score while some are still going to be vastly better than others.

The game mag I subscribe to has NEVER given 100/100 to any game and that's the part of the reason I read it. Because when it gives game score over 90 I know that game is going to rock (iirc halo3 or was it two got under 90).

First of all, to the person who said that "Game companies didn't suddenly get better" you are partially right. Game companies didn't suddenly get better, it took years. Many of these companies (like Kojima) have been working on perfecting their art over decades. However, the most certainly DID get better, and reviews partially reflect that. Better reviews for better games has been the trend.

However, there IS a problem with review publishers who also take advertisement money from companies that publish the games they are reviewing. There has to be SOME conflict of interest. But that's the nature of the beast. It is hard to make money publishing a game website or magazine without taking advert money from game publishers. Bear that in mind when you read reviews. Same goes for reading movie reviews from a newspaper who takes ads for movies. Can't separate these things out.

Don't choose a reviewer because you think they are objective. There is no such thing as an objective review. By definition to judge any art form, you have to be subjective.

Pick a reviewer because the games you like tend to be the games that reviewer likes. Then when they say a game is good, you will probably like that game.

Perfection in Art is subjective. I haven't been a fan of the MGS series myself, but I've already played through MGS4 a couple of times because the gameplay ans story telling is excellent. I can't disagree with a 10/10 rating for this game, it's that good.

But if you prefer football games, then you will not find MGS4 to be the perfect game. Bear that in mind when reading game reviews.
