Sony Europe announced today that production at the Sony London Studios for PS3 titles Eight Days and The Getaway has ceased. The company says the decision was made after an internal review found that resources would be better allocated to enhance the "incredibly strong list of exclusive first party titles" coming in the near future.
GI.biz reports that The Guardian recently ran a piece that Eight Days was going into full production. The game had not been seen -- or really heard of -- since a debut trailer back at E3 2006. The Getaway was apparently going to be the studio's next project after Eight Days. No word yet what'll happen to those who were working on the title.

Noshino (your post will be edited slightly to circumvent school filters, and yes, I am wasting valuable school time for you, feel honored ;) ):
"huh? Both The Getaway [cheese], and Killzone and Killzone: Liberation had gathered a lot of hype, not only that, in all of the cases, it was an either completely love the [cracker] or completely hate it situation, hence why the scores."
Hype doesn't always amount to much. See: Daikatana.
That aside, maybe it's a bit much for me to say "killzone sucks ps3 ftl!!!" Say what you will about review aggregation, but the average scores for Killzone and Killzone: Liberation at Metacritic are 70 and 77, respectively. I don't see enough deviation in the aggregated reviews to suggest that it's a "love it or hate it" matter, either. The aforementioned scores are not terrible by any means, but if nothing else, the 70 supports the case that Killzone wasn't the "Halo killer" it was originally touted to be. Liberation's slight uptick bodes well for Killzone 2, but will the sequel gather the favor of critics and players the way that Halo, CoD, Gears, or Resistance have? I have my doubts, but time will tell.
"If you haven't seen anything that suggest improvement, then sir, where have you been for the last 6 months or so?"
Of course it's going to improve over the span of development. That's the point of development, and why a title is generally shown to the press time and time again. What I was asking is if anyone had seen a preview where instead of doing the typical ass-kissing, the author had given a credible analysis of KZ2's current strengths and weaknesses and concluded it's shaped up nicely. Given the nature of most previews, though, that may be unattainable.

I haven't played The Getaway, so I won't comment on that, but the original Killzone WAS overhyped. It was a cool idea with some pretty interesting antagonists, but the execution was just boring. And the review scores reflected that fact.
I've played a lot of shooters in my day and this one just screamed generic. I found it to be about on par with some of the current Medal of Honor games and Geist for the Cube.
It remains to be seen if Killzone 2 will be any good, but from what I've read of first impressions so far, the only real positive comments revolved around the visuals and how pretty they were - likening them to infamous E3 trailer from a while back.
I don't even know where this damn thread is going anymore. Didn't it start with a negative comment about Afrika?

I don't see you effectively counteracting anything I have to say, Fidlious. I don't even see you trying. Here, maybe a smile will encourage you. :)
Granted, it's been several hours and this comment thread is basically dead. I feel like my part of the discussion carried its weight.

Saints Row team didn't get cut, it got moved around. You don't need as many people on the tail end of the project as you do the front.

Whatever. The first 2 Getaways were ass anyway.
Get those devs in there to start fastracking God of War 3 and Infamous (or, even better, a next-gen cel shaded Sly Cooper.) Those are the only unreleased 2 Sony properties (outside of LBP) that I care about at all.

Sad how they made anyone think that CGI footage was in-game by including HUD in them. Even these idiots on GT are fooled. C'mon now it waaaay too obvious.

Yeah, but at least there wasn't any actual HUD in them making matters even worse haha.

Well thats a shame, was looking forward to the getaway :(
The one game that takes place in London and it gets canned.
Great, so much for that. My interest level has now ceased also.

Maybe this means they start working on a new "Primal".

The Getaway should never have been granted license to start a 3rd game... They had 2 chances already and both of those titles where like the effluence of a distemper stricken dog with a worm infestation.
I am however slightly* saddened by the cancellation of Eight Days which looked as though it had at least the potential of potential.
Evidently not.
*(by "slightly" i mean not at all, upon grave reflection)

Hopefully never.
1. Play as Zeon in the ground war
2. Troop based gameplay shown looked like Mechassault: Lone Wolf
3. Char Aznable's your ally. And you'll get to pilot a Rock Dom.

For all The Getaways problems it was one of the first games I remember to have real acting and a fairly decent story. Personally I could give a shit about this, but The Getaway needs its props as one of the first games with a real story.

Not to mention The Getaway was one of the first games to completely remove the HUD. No health bar, your body language expressed your health. No maps or directions in the driving sequences, your blinker was your only cue. No health pickups, you leaned against a wall to "regain your breath" like in many british mob movies. The Getaway, conceptually, was ahead of it's time. Hell, remember the mission in the apartment building? How the stereo music had acoustic modifications based upon where you were in the building compared to where the stereo was?

I remember coming out of the whole experience with mixed emotions. I like the like lack of HUD and the cinematic approach that was brought with it. The health system also (did it outdate Halo? I defiantly played the Getaway first). But I also remember the dodgy mechanics etc. It was like going the cinema to watch an awesome movie but popcorn, shoes and the occasional used condom thrown at me from the kids in back row.

I heard that an inside source revealed that the reason production has ceased is that the PS3 is too difficult to develop for.

I'm wondering what high quality PS3 exclusive titles they're being moved to. There isn't exactly a deluge of those coming out of Sony and its second-party crew.

The hole where Atari buried all those unsold copies of ET, or the hole where Sony is burying all those unfulfilled promised features and games they announced since the unveiling of the PS3?
Two HDMI ports for dual monitor GT5! Woo hoo.
