Across the land, Wiis are being neglected
26
Consumer research bods Nielsen recently set out to answer mind-poppingly important questions such as: just how long did an average play session on the Wii last for somebody in North America between the ages of 10 and 26? The results suggest that we should all be paying a little more attention to our poor, neglected Wiis.
While Nintendo's platform enjoys a decent share of gamers' overall gaming time, the rest of Nielsen's statistics paint a damning picture. The Wii lags behind the Xbox 360 and PS3 in both the "average number of sessions a day" and "average usage days per month" (disgraceful commitment there from the over-26 demographic) sections.
The average Wii session also doesn't last as long as those on its two rivals, though no wonder with all of those required installations and ridiculously protracted cut-scenes, amirite? What's that? We're just being sore losers? Fine. Whatever.

Not suprised to be honest, other then at parties or when I get a new game, I rarely play my Wii, just isn't enough to stimulate my interest for long, the longest I have ever spent on it alone was playing Red Steel when I first got it, and Mario Galaxy.

Same here. I just don't use it that much because the games aren't compelling. Lost Winds was a great game though. All 2 hours of it.
Of course, take these charts with a grain of salt. Nielson called me up a few months back and they had very specific questions which did not really reflect well what gaming went on in the household. Their study is clearly flawed based on my experience with them.
Also, what's up with those age groups? 10-26? That just seems way too broad. At least do it within the ESRB categories or something more than arbitrarily picking numbers. 10-14, 14-17, 17-21, 21+ or something like that, that would make more sense.

The non-gaming market that the Wii attracts, and the other two systems don't, is obviously not going to play as much as the hardcore market. This alone is a significant cause of the statistics.

No surprise there. It's no secret that the Wii have been selling a lot between non/casual gamers, all of which pull the avarage down.
I would like to see how the numbers change if they ask only to hardcore gamers, or people owning the three consoles.
(actually, I don't think the answers would change that much...)

if you ask me this is a GOOD thing...more than an hour of gaming every day is NOT GOOD! Anyone agree???

The console of responsible gaming.
Know when to say when.
Nintendo uses the data to sell the Wii as the console that kids don't want to play *tooo* much.

i was gonna say that the installation process for ps3 adds about 30 mins to the gaming session and also the wii doesn't have an achievement system like the 360 does. I know many people who have ruined their social lives and marriages because of playing the 360 far too much, ha.

Are you SURE you're a video game fan? Anyway, how can the Wii lose? We have Mario Kart! Best game ever. T-T

jared... It's pretty damn rare to have to do an install on PS3, even if they do count that as "playtime" which I doubt. I have over 40 games for the PS3 and # of long mandatory installs = 1 (GTA4).
I do agree that achievement whoring could add playtime where one would normally stop, but that's not just a 360 thing (though probably more of an issue on 360), since achievements aren't a new concept exclusive to 360.

Actually, the ps3 gets the least amount of usage across the board.

Wii is still second to the 360 though.

Where these people get numbers like this never ceases to amaze me. I wish I could be an analysist and get paid 80k a year to spew educated guesses out of my ass.

I don't know what an "analysist" is, but I can tell you that they get these numbers from surveys. That's right, they actually ask people. Nielsen is one of the most respected market research firms in the world.

It's called a typo,.. welcome to the internet, I'm the least of your concerns, trust me. Get off your high horse.
And respected or not, I never take polls like this very seriously as there are way too many variables to concider.
Even if it were true, I hardly call roughly 2 hours of play time a day, roughly every other day, neglecting the console.

Since when is using something nearly an hour and half each day considered "neglect"?

I haven't played a video game period in a week or two. When I'm out of it, I'm out of it, and when I'm in it, I'm constantly in it. Just the way I roll.

I wonder how many people this data represents.

Out of my 360 and Wii, only my Wii is connected. I'll probably hook the 360 back up when Banjo three comes out and the only thing I play on my Wii now is virtual console games.

I don't think I'd call those figures "neglect." I'm 28 years old and don't have the same time for gaming that I used to, but when I get in front of the Wii for some quality time, I'm just as enthusiastic about it as I was back in the NES days.
I'd be more inclined to chalk this up to a lot of Wii owners doing a lot of other things in their lives than playing games.

I think part of the beauty of the Wii is the fact that you can be a casual gamer ... In my twenties, I could spend 5-6 hours a night playing a single game. Now that I'm in my thirties and have a wife, etc., I'm lucky to get an hour or two. I like the Wii because I can play a round of Wii Sports, or check out the news or get on the internet without making a multi-hour "commitment".

Like other commenters have noted, Wiis are HARDLY being neglected if they're played twice a day for almost two hours total basically every weekday (which is what 19.66 days ROUGHLY comes to). C'mon guys... you've been so good spinning seemingly bad news into good news... don't pop our happy Wii bubble!

I barely get to play my Wii b/c of life and wife. The only way I can is if I stay up real late and play but then I'm real late to work which could lead to no work which would mean no money to buy video games. Whew, gotta catch my breath. The only time I played the PS3 was at my cousins for about 2 3/4 hours. He rented Haze and it sucked monkey balls. It required an update or something to play and it took like 10-15 mins (no joke). Maybe it was b/c he just bought it? anyways, we also played Rainbow Six and that was pretty tight.

Very interesting... kinda.
"...no wonder with all of those required installations and ridiculously protracted cut-scenes, amirite?"
Amen.
I am in the 27+ demographic. So at least we are doing our part when measured in ' % of total console minutes', w(htvr)tf that means.
When a Wii game has my attention, it has my full attention. My four or five favorite games of the last two years, I played on the Wii. The games on the other consoles have not inspired me in the same way recently.
When I'm not binging though, I rarely turn on my Wii. If I'm just passing time or blowing off steam, I turn to blowing up zombies on some other platform. The Wii is like the fancy scotch glasses in the cupboard that are too good for quick shots of cheap rum. They are only used when you have exceptional drink that is too good to drink out of the plastic Captain Morgan shot glasses, and when entertaining or impressing your friends.
That is my experience. My Wii may get less playtime, but Wii owners are classy; They value quality over quantity. W(ho)tf cares which console gets an extra 20 minutes a day? I want to know who's having the most fun.

I definitely agree that the larger casual audience likely drags the numbers down. They like to play with other things like... sports equipment and sunshine. Blegh.
Either way, I'm glad I don't have to care. I'm happy with my Wii and that's all that matters to me.
