Sci-Fi Channel creating an MMO/TV show hybrid
With people spending less time watching TV and more time playing video games, TV networks are making increasingly unique attempts to get their audiences back. The latest example comes from the Sci-Fi Channel, which is integrating an upcoming TV series with a concurrent MMORPG that will affect and be affected by the on-air action.
"For example, we can tell [players] that there will be an alien invasion at a certain place in the game, at a certain time, and to be there with all their friends and be ready," Sci-Fi Channel President Dave Howe told the L.A. Times. "The outcome depends on them. And then that battle will be part of the universe in the show." Footage from in-game battles will be used in the show and the players choices themselves will guide which characters, settings and storylines are highlighted on the program.
The game was originally planned to be an outgrowth of the channel's popular Battlestar Galactica remake, but the developers at Trion World Network decided it would be better to start fresh with new characters and environments. Both the show and the series will be set 80 to 100 years in the future and launched not that much sooner in the summer of 2010. More information is slated to be revealed at Comic-Con in July.

Agreed, this could be good if they do it EXACTLY right.
JontheNinja @ Jun 5th 2008 11:41PM
Holy shit this means I could run out, tear off all my armor, and dance in the middle of an intergalactic space battle ON LIVE TV?

BSG reference FTW!

I'ma be a TV STAR! Yeah, I could see this working out really well, or really badly. With the tech we should have by 2010, in-game footage should look pretty good, but people would have to cooperate. And not dance naked in front of the cameras during dramatic parts... Or teamkill important characters in the show.
FSK405K @ Jun 6th 2008 12:23AM
The choice not to make it a BSG game probably had to do with BSG ending before the game is to be released.

Dear SciFi,
You are recreating the old "phone-in" standard that never lasted long enough to become standard in television many, many years back. Please stop it. You are trying to get ideas, for free, from the ignorant masses and I can't think of one time that that has worked for the best. Story and continuity is guaranteed to suffer. Most TV series' have not lasted more than a season by doing it. Those that do are horrible.
Thanks,
From an old SciFi channel viewer of the 80-90's.

I remember when Anarchy Online tried to do this with an online series back in 2000. Didn't work out that well.
Zippy5150 @ Jun 6th 2008 12:34AM
Dammit, you mention Sci-Fi Channel, and show a Battlestar Galactica hybrid.... you get my hopes up about a (good) BSG game!

IT'S A CYLON TRICK!

Goodie, reality TV for the MMO crowd!
Next week on Fox, what happens when you put a gold farmer, a sexy Blood Elf, an unruly Orc, a roguish Night Elf and a Tauren with a gland problem all in the same house? Find out, at 7 on Friday!
Oh, and don't forget about the Gnome!
Cal @ Jun 6th 2008 1:11AM
sounds like one of those overly ambitious products that end up nothing like originally promised.

Battlestar Gallactica
PayTheMan @ Jun 6th 2008 5:45AM
I don't see how we'll be able to know whether player actions would really influence the outcome of the series, or if the outcome will be predetermined by the writers; how will we know that the story will not follow an arc that is unchangeable by the players?
kataztrophy @ Jun 6th 2008 9:47AM
Technology isn't good enough for this to work(it'll be corny). You may as well watch the makeshift stories people make for WoW.
jhrf89 @ Jun 6th 2008 11:59AM
Nice idea. If anything ever comes of this it would be amazing. Far bigger than the Sci Fi channel there are large amounts of moneys at stake here I reckon.
The show and the game would have to be strong for it to work. The show to get people interested and the game to keep people playing after all the initail real time show events stop.
:)

This is why I don't watch TV much anymore. How sad...Sci Fi used to be one of my favorite channels. Now it sucks. Even ECW is unwatchable *coughmikeadmlecough*
Lord Bowser @ Jun 7th 2008 10:58AM
2DSquirrel watches wrestling: figures. I'm not saying you're a backwards hick, but I'm not surprised.
Enjoy your sweaty men in tights.
Squirrel3D @ Jun 7th 2008 3:02PM
I'm a black man BTW, so nice try assuming I'm something that I'm not.
Casual people watch wrestling too you know, and I'm one of them.
Why do I get the feeling your always gonna have egg in your face when it comes to me?
