@TwEE

I was merely stating that I like multiple types of games, not just FPS's, or just RPG's. I just don't understand why they can't try out different genres of games as well.

PerfectCompanion, the reason why you normally get voted down isn't because of Sony fanboys, but your own ignorance. Try not being a total and complete ass and you may find you'll gain popularity rather than being an embarassment to the fanbase of the consoles you herald.

OMGOMG, you overly simplify the entire situation. Not to mention you have very little knowledge on what you speak. Take, as an example, your mentioning of Dead Rising and Lost Planet as attempts to reach the JAPANESE gamers instead of being a confessed attempt by Capcom to design a game for WESTERN gamers. Likewise, the Dead Or Alive series as well as Ninja Gaiden have a much bigger following in the west as the DOA series is largely frowned upon by Japanese fighting game fans.

Now, Xbox 360, like PS3, has huge hurdles in front of it and they seemingly do not care. Like notice how Sony removed all but one SKU in Japan. This is because the two SKU scheme in Japan was one of the major factors in Sonys thus far failure. Meanwhile, not counting bundles, Microsoft continues with three SKUs in Japan.

You also give far too much credit to that strangely small list. To the Japanese gamer, they seem like rare treats rather than reasons to own. One of the main reasons why you see sales increase on certain games but not hardware is most people who are "into those games" have already bought the system. Not so suprisingly, we saw a similar effect with GTAIV here in the states. But the 360's presence in Japan still looks like a western focused machine. Maybe this will prove the point to you.

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-14-71-br-49-en.html

Look through those games, that's a good example of what the Xbox 360 racks look like in Japan. THAT'S the problem right there.

Now, before you think I'm giving the PS3 a freepass, lookie here. Looks familiar in situation? I hope so because this is a major problem in Japan for Sony. And yes, before you rant on Sony's poor online, keep in mind online gaming in Japan is still EXTREMELY niche and on top of that, imagine the annoyance of Japanese gamers when they learn they have to PAY for what is free on PSP, DS, PS3, and Wii.

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-14-71-105-49-en.html

So what does this have to do with Nintendo and their success and likewise PSP's resurgance? Well hell, just take a look.

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-14-71-9g-49-en.html

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-14-71-9f-49-en.html

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-14-71-11e-49-en.html

So "what does it all mean?" Basically 360 and PS3 are still completely lacking in a Japanese market focus and as such, completely lacking to break into the market. No amount of "but.. but.. but.. Blue Dragon" excuses can change this fact. No excuses on how it isn't being embraced just because it's American made will fly (iPods are hugely successful in Japan). Plain and simple, both Sony and 360 still have a western focus and until they change that in Japan and quit leading with Turok and Gears of War, the systems will continue to do poorly.

LMAO Sir Fid

You actually come to this site seeking popularity? That makes you the ultimate loser..

Its just not that serious. I don't care what you do with your dumb "vote up or vote down" shit. Its your choice and you choose to base your life on how many hearts you say.

That whole wall of verbage isn't going to change the simple facts. Nor is it going to change my opinion. Nor are you going to astound people with the amount of words you put up on Joystiq each day.

At OMG I hear what your saying. I too think that the best RPGs are made from a variety of different places and countries. Same goes for racing games, fighting games, etc.

The part I didn't agree with is calling the Japanes stupid. I just think they're biased or a lil bitter. Thats it.

@Wong

Hey, thanks for the well thought out rebuttal. I'll admit I didn't research the topic as well as you obviously did (I just saw this and had some pent up anger).

But don't you think there's a reason why Sony and MS are moving more towards Western game styles?

I find it amazing how Nintendo has been able to bridge the gap between western and eastern tastes, and create something both the US and Japanese gamers (however casual they may be) wanting more and more. They deserve lots of credit for it.

Wong, besides the Wii, do you think there will be a game that can combine the elements of an FPS along with the elements of a JRPG? That's something I could see being a game that could succeed in both markets.

Amazing, Perfect Companion...

A single paragraph was meant for you. Only one paragraph. And still you manage to fuck up. First, by saying "tldr" on my response which wasn't meant for you. I know I can't reach you with logic, you are far too inconceivably dumb. I just told you why you keep getting banned. Personally, I only vote funny posts up. I let general concensus bury your dumbass.

The second screw up was not even bothering to read what you were commenting on. If you want to know why 360 is failing in Japan, it's right there, big bold letters with links. Information so simple even you can follow along. And yes, even proves the issues with PS3's lack of wide adoption.

"Wong, besides the Wii, do you think there will be a game that can combine the elements of an FPS along with the elements of a JRPG? That's something I could see being a game that could succeed in both markets."

Well, we've already seen it in one form. Ratchet & Clank as a series borrowed heavily from JRPG trends such as kills enhancing health bars and how often you used an item leveled it up. Not too suprisingly, R&C was fairly popular for a western deved game in Japan. These elements, although with a western RPG feel (feats, etc), made it into COD4.

But as to a first person shooter, don't think we'll see it. Japan, as a gaming culture, enjoys seeing their characters on screen. Until that trend and the trend on fashionable character design as a lead ends, I don't think we'll see Japan embrace first person anything for a long time.

Despite rants to the contrary, PSP has seen a resurgance in NA and EU. More importantly, PSP is doing much, much, much better than any other handheld competitor. In fact, it's still on track to being better performance wise than GBA. It just so happens DS did much, much better.

The system is not a failure by any stretch of the imagination.

Lets look at the whole picture:

Yes, hardware sales have climb, but what could had contribute to this?

"People want games for the PSP!"
Ok, lets see
*checks weekly software sales*
Nope, besides Monster Hunter(honestly, this is the only thing keeping it alive in Japan) there are no decently selling PSP games; hell, the only other one was a Final Fantasy 7 spinoff, every other big selling PSP title was Monster Hunter.

"umm..."
Which comes to my point. If people aren't buying GAMES for a GAME SYSTEM, what are they buying it for? That answer is emulation and Piracy. Yes, piracy has been gaining popularity in the handheld scene worldwide, just look at any gaming message/image board and you will continue to see an increase in popularity in it.

"Why does this matter? People are buying the system, developers are seeing this!"
Now tell me, how is the reality of consumers who don't buy software attractive to a 3rd party develop, who's only goal is to sell software? It isn't, which is why developers have been slowly pulling support for the system; even once pro PSP developers have all but abandoned the system because it wasn't profitable. Don't believe me? Look at the upcoming release list of PSP titles and compare it to the DS, besides the Square-Enix Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts games, what is interesting that has been announced?

PSP: The system Sony loves, Developers hate.

Oh? you really checked that weekly sales chart?

Let me check...

http://vgchartz.com/japweekly.php

....I guess we do owe the sales of PSPs to Monst...oh wait...

1 Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu Portable 3
Konami 1 106,191

6 Valhalla Knights 2
Marvelous Entertainment 1 43,640 43,640

7 Monster Hunter Freedom 2nd G
Capcom 10 40,392

"Which comes to my point. If people aren't buying GAMES for a GAME SYSTEM, what are they buying it for? That answer is emulation and Piracy. Piracy?

Ok, look, Im completely against piracy, and even don't do homebrew.

Piracy on the DS is almost as famous as the one of the PSP, I think you might have been refering to the Homebrew community, in which case, yes, the PSP's is more popular.

Don't believe me? just look at the ROM sites

About 3rd party support, actually, the PSP is loved, the problem is Sony, they have been focusing so many resources on the PS3, that it seems that they have forgotten about the PSP, hell, there are some developers that at this point, despite liking the hardware, have mentioned that they wont release any games for it because they say that "Sony is unsure about which way to take it"...

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=307271

PSP: The system loved by the public and developers, yet somewhat ignored by Sony after the PS3's arrival...

Theres that odd japanese baseball game that has spiked in sales over the last week, have you mentioned that Noshiro?

4MyFriends, its just logic, sales only became this high due to the few latest games, and with high sales like this, I think people will take it upon themselves to backtrack, maybe catch up on those old titles they didn't have, God of war, Wipeout etc etc. Beyond that, mainly its about Monster Hunter 2 leading the way.

This will hopefully give rise to a new wave of PSP games as developers begin to see what is popular on PSP.
