It appears that the rumors were half-true. Late Friday evening OXM UK posted the first details for the next installment of the Call of Duty franchise and new scans confirm the magazine's exclusive cover story. Call of Duty: World at War will bring the series back to World War II and include new weapons in the series' first foray into single player co-op territory; two-player split-screen and four player online is planned. In development at Treyarch (Call of Duty 3) the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare engine based title will focus on a Pacific campaign as US forces battle Japanese adversaries while the Soviet Army invades Germany.
Having been in development for two years--with the lead platform being the Xbox 360-- Call of Duty: World at War features enhanced environments that bend, break and burn during the historic battle (an example of the new flamethrower weapon burning flesh as well as the world was given in the 4-page story). Multiplayer fans have something to look forward to as the series makes it's return to World War II. Treyarch, having taken cues from Infinity Ward (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare) will include a perks accomplishment system which was made famous by the current Xbox Live leader. Strap into the De Lorean gamers, looks like we're hitting 88MpH back to World War II.

Arg. I'll pass. Not interested in yet another WW2 game and no offense but an American campaign in WW2? Na. Been done to death, lets see some other country that played a bigger role. Not being an ass i just believe there are better encounters that would make for a more interest game.
Might win me over if you get to play as the Russians as well, they had a pretty brutal time. But with that said i think I'll wait for 6, 5 will have to really impress to get my interest.

Everyone jumps to bashing WWII, but did anyone remember to look at what they're offering? I mean I was disappointed in 3 also, but their upgrades on the engine sound pretty impressive. I've been waiting for an engine in which the battlefield was affected by...well...the battle. Hope for the best, expect the worst.

Everyone and their dog was hoping for Call of Duty: Future Combat
Activision have made a boo boo here...why cant publishers see what the gaming public see?

you have got to be kidding me. this is just ridiculous, why would they do this. why would you take a step backwards. COD4 was a smash hit, and treyarch is just so damned stupid that instead of catching on to the fact that PEOPLE ARE SICK OF WWII SHOOTERS, they make another one.
now i loved COD3 as much as the next guy, but i was getting a little sick of WWII, so i warmly welcomed COD4. I had nothing against Treyarch until this, but now i am definately waiting until the next infinity ward COD. i refuse to pay for this crap.

Dude, you guys suck, being that it's based on the same engine used in COD 4 means it will look great, being that it's a pacific battle (which was only done sweet-ish in Medal of Honor Pacific Assault) is also cool, plus you get to fight in Berlin. They also had 2 good years to work on it so far.
I am still hoping that Treyach will do a good job since COD 3 sucked ass, but it they do a good job this game will rule, and I player all medal of honor pacific assault, allied assault and its 2 expansions, I played Airbourne too (sucked), I played Brothers in arms series and Call of Duty 1, 2 and 3 (first two were good, and of course the fourth).
I am just saying I've played enough WWII games but I am not bored, I just want one with current-gen grafics that is actually GOOD.
So here's to hoping.

THEIR STORIES NEED TO BE TOLD!!!! EVERY SINGLE ONE, FROM EVERY SINGLE POINT OF VIEW. WWII! WWII! WWII! WWII! WWII!

Activision should just branch out and do 2 franchises, let Treyarch stick to the WWII FPS stuff and let IW shine (and bring in the dollars) with their take on things.
I was absolutely gutted when I saw this article. I just cannot understand the thinking behind it, unless, as was said earlier in the comments, Treyarch was already working on this before COD4 became the king of Live.

Seriously... another? I thought we were going to see the end of the WWII games when COD:MW came out. No offense to anyone involved in the war itself but the story is played out. It's done. Over with. Focus on Vietnam or Iraq or Desert Storm (all 5 minutes of it) or (GASP) MAKE YOUR OWN STORY. Is that really that difficult? To be original and not bas everything off of the same war that every other series is? Apparently so. I'll stick to COD 4 and other modern shooters or the futuristic Halo, GOW types.
Dumb Call of Duty.

why does it seem that treyarch makes filler games in the call of duty franchise?

A while ago (before CoD3) Activision announced they would trade off the Call of Duty name to Infinity Ward and Treyarch every year so a new title can be made.

How many more ww2 games are they going to produce? I thought cod4 would bring a new horizon to activision. But there going back to beating a dead horse. How about producing titles about other conflicts that occured in the world. Like Grenada, the soviet invasion of afganistan, VIETNAM, Bosnia, even Desert Storm.
In my opinion we need to move on to Vietnam maybe?

Having worked on the original call of duty and the first expansion with both IW and Grey Matter (turned into Treyarch) here's my take:
Working with Vince, Grant, Jason and the rest of the IW crew was on of the highlights of my professional career (I am out of gaming now). Top notch crew, atmosphere, and just a willing to create. They are truly innovators in gaming if you go back to their days at EA.
I can only speak on the expansion they did - they (Grey matter) were under a gun from the big boys above and didn't have much room to add stuff that they wanted. I will say that the group assembled there at the time was INCREDIBLE to work with as well - I felt very fortunate to work back to back with such great groups. Individually their talents there are awesome and some of the stuff cut from the game was truly awesome. I understand that a lot has happened since Grey Matter got absorbed by TreyArch, etc...blah blah. Here's the thing and this is NO DISRESPECT to the gang at TreyArch - but IW is MLB and TreyArch is the AAA baseball - when it comes to COD.
All that said, I am SURE that the decision to go to WWII was not the individuals at TreyArch but some corp suits....if any of you know them personally ask them (not on forums - they can't tell you the truth there!) if they wouldn't rather have access to COD4:MW stuff (not just the engine).....
I am disappointed that we will have to retread WWII again with COD and that we will PROB have to wait for IW's next continuation of the MW series (No MMO PLEASE!)
See you guys on Live - Domination!

I'm with Jc I do not want another WWII game how many can we play it is just too much it is over kill i would rather play a game when you run around in a big orange wig and kick random people in the balls of the street but that's me. Call of Duty 4 outstanding this game will be a fail because most people don't want just another WWII shooter they want something outstanding i personally love the AC 130 gun ship part in call of duty 4 no more gun ships for a few more years =(

Im sure the game will be great to play, but i think i speak on behalf of alot of CoD fans, ww2 based games are so dry now, we would prefer perhaps another modern warfare or maybe vietnam based war game. Having a different type of shooter captures attention, so if activision want to boost there sales, then i dont think it should be a ww2 based game. All in all i look forward 2 playin it though will be good lol

CoD5 will be an awesome game. Co-Op will add a whole new aspect to the CoD gameplay. I personally think that CoD3 is cooler online, due to the classes, healing allies and vechiles, but Cod4 is still fantastic, especially the idea of prestige and golden weapons. besides Cod4 isnt impossible on veteran. it is hard yes but defiantley possible. WWII games are good, i will admit the y are used alot e.g. the Medal of Honour series, but it is only a FPS and the storyline, while important, isnt the whole idea of the game.

I hope they keep the modern weapons in COD5 and try to add things people liked about COD3 and COD4. If they mix elements from both games COD5 would have no trouble of selling...oh yeah WW games are boring

Man i dont no y yall kep on thinkin that cause it WWII is goin be bad cause wuts gonna happen when they make 3 more modern warfare r yall gonna get bored a dat 2 then when they make futre warfare and they make 3 of those wut they goin do then

I think this game has more opportunities than other world war 2 type games. But what I really want to know is when it comes out and how much it is but if it like the other COD's then I'm going to buy it.

I don't think this will be a bad game and this is set in the pacific which is very different to the european theater much grittier type of war and involves more guerilla conflict i'm especially looking foward to what they can do with the British campaign i would like to see some sabotage missions in Burma or in other coutnries as the British were heavily involved in this theater. I ask everyone to not judge the game just because it is about ww2 look at moh airborne that managed to be a good ww2 game if you are going to judge all games on that then don't buy brothers in arms hells highway there are going to be way more ww2 shooters after cod5 and in support of Treyarch they only had 11 months to make a new engine and create a whole new place to set a game Infinity Ward had 3 years to make cod2 now they have enough time to make what i fell will be one of the best of the series.
Thanks ;)
Thanks ;)

If they wanted to go back to WW2 they could've done something VERY different.
Playing as the Chinese (Communists/Nationalists) fighting Japan, playing as the Filipino Resistance fighting alongside the Americans in defense of the islands under Japanese invasion, and finally playing the Americans at sea and in the air.
Now THAT would be a change from the usual WW2 scenario.

imagine this....ww2....we are the germans instead! you get to blitzkreig england. take rommel to africa. it would deffinitly be different. then when the allies get involved you switch to them because we all know we cant have a game and be the bad guys the whole time =]

OK guys. Personally i love ww2. But for all you that dont like it, well its going to be a great game. Its going to the pacific. Its going to be different and exciting. Its not going to be the same. People need to realize that ww2 didnt only remain in germany. That was only half of the war and the other half was TOTALLY different and more ecxiting! Come on Buy the game
