Civilization IV: Colonization announced, no Civ IV required
2K Games announced today that they'll release Civilization IV: Colonization sometime this autumn. Don't let the title fool you, the game is a stand-alone product (meaning it doesn't require Civ IV) and is an update of the classic strategy game, Colonization, by Sid Meier and Brian Reynolds back in the Microprose days.
Colonization has players leading one of four European nations trying to take over the New World. 2K Games says the title will feature "all-new graphics" -- although we can't tell much difference from Civ IV -- along with improved diplomacy. Considering it's a stand-alone product, we understand the Civ IV name was put in the title to sell more copies; however, we hope Colonization doesn't feel like a missing member from the "scenarios" available in Civ IV: Beyond the Sword., many of which could arguably have been stand-alone products.

Speaking of Microprose and Brian Reynolds, I would absolutely die for a new Transport Tycoon game.
That was pretty much the first video game I fell in love with, after Warcraft 2.

That's a neat game to update. I approve.
Although I do not like Civilization: Revolution. It's probably great for those who are new to strategy games, but I've played too much Civ 4 at this point.

Civ Revo looks great. I finished the demo yesterday and it made me very happy. I will buy it fo sho.
The controls are great. There are many gameplay innovations that make it easy to play on console.
Its still Civ, but new. And I cant wait for XBL multiplayer.
As for Colonization, I never played it. I am not sure about this Civ IV/ Colonization. If it comes to Mac, I will check it out.

I got into Civ with Civ 2 but I have to say I was really impressed with the Civ Rev demo. It's obviously a lot more streamlined but I was suprised how much of the "civ" feel they managed to keep. Can't wait for the full version.
Farseer (GDI) @ Jun 9th 2008 6:10PM
I completely agree about the Civ Rev demo. I thought that the concept of playing Civ was still alive and kicking, but you didn't have to worry about any of the micromanagement. I'll grab the 360 version when it releases for sure.
On topic, I don't know what this new iteration will offer that I don't already have in Civ IV... I guess we'll know more this fall.

Do want
willmore2000 @ Jun 9th 2008 5:40PM
Awesome.
I spent months playing the original, I hope this game does it justice.
Tmoney @ Jun 9th 2008 6:37PM
I loved the original as well, and played it a ton. I hope it plays as good as the original. I just wish they didn't ditch the name as I'm sure most people are just going to assume its a add on for Civ IV. Just the fact they named it this makes me worried it will play like an add on, rather than having the unique systems the original had (such as choosing founding fathers).
Dirty @ Jun 9th 2008 5:42PM
Never played a civ before. After playing the demo for revolution it made me want to try other ones. The demo was pretty long and cut you off right when you were getting somewhere
NATO_Duke @ Jun 9th 2008 5:53PM
Oh, Ninja Gaiden did the same thing! Bastards!!!
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 9th 2008 7:31PM
Duke, it sais here ur Xbox 360 has been on for 19 hours buddy. I think the demo has finished downloading. lmao! Well, it sais...Nato_Duke AWAY for 19 hours. But still, dude we dont want any rrod's in our crew ok? OKAY?!! Turn it off.
:)

Hopefully I will be done with Sins of a Solar Empire before this comes out, 'cause I do want.
Probably won't be done though... that game is easily the most addicting PC game I've played since... well Civ IV.
unfriendly_cat @ Jun 9th 2008 6:04PM
I loved Colonization (more than Civ, even).
Wikipedia says there was some controversy about the game ignoring slavery; wonder how they are going to handle this in the update.

KILL THE INDIANS!! WOOT!!
&rew @ Jun 9th 2008 6:15PM
Then we can take their land! You're next Brits!
&rew @ Jun 9th 2008 6:23PM
I'm an "indian" by the way so you can't call me a racist.
Philip (Fernando Rocker Defence Force) @ Jun 9th 2008 6:50PM
Just cause we stole your land doesn't mean you can steal my avatar. :p
Korova *Pyro aspect* @ Jun 9th 2008 7:16PM
to be fair, his avatar is jet black, yours is more like charcoal gray.
&rew @ Jun 10th 2008 3:47PM
Hey, my avatar won't upload propertly, it just loads this black space, so stealing your avatar was just a coincedence.
Philip (Fernando Rocker Defence Force) @ Jun 9th 2008 6:15PM
This just made my day. I will but this day one.
Whoppy @ Jun 9th 2008 6:18PM
Brilliant news! I loved the original.... had this Doom II and Sim City 2000 on the families first computer... a sexy beige Mac :D
mian @ Jun 9th 2008 6:23PM
>2K Games says the title will feature "all-new graphics" >-- although we can't tell much difference from Civ IV
Not new compared to Civ 4, new compared to the classic Colonization. Silly joystiq =)
Lord Foortwenti @ Jun 9th 2008 7:10PM
I actually hope that it IS an add-on for Civ4 as far that it adds it's features to CivIV and they aren't exclusive to this game. Of course, if this includes everything from vanilla Civ4 through BtS, it won't be an issue.
But if it's just vanilla Civ4 w/ these new colonization features, and it doesn't add it's features to my xpanded Civ4....well, that'll just plain suck.
I hope that made sense to people besides myself....
GenBanks @ Jun 9th 2008 7:20PM
Those are some yummy water graphics.
I hope it gets released on steam on the same day as retail.
MosquitoControl @ Jun 9th 2008 7:40PM
Funny, I feel I was discussing this a few months back. Was there a recent poll asking if we wanted it remade?
Because I did. And I'm happy. Although the FreeCol guys might not be.
Neebs @ Jun 9th 2008 8:10PM
I would kill for a Civ5.
josh @ Jun 9th 2008 11:59PM
Civ IV is still getting expansions and is still an awesome game!
I am happy with this - lets home they make Alpha Centauri II with the Civ IV engine next.
Gunner McGrath @ Jun 9th 2008 9:44PM
Colonization was the first game I ever got SERIOUSLY addicted to, and to this day I still think it was the best of the sid meier games.. totally excited about this one.
Ghetto Levis @ Jun 10th 2008 2:55AM
ZOMG! I've been waiting for a Col remake for hundreds and hundreds of years.
Well, months.
Ok, days... but it felt like years!
Russell Center @ Jun 10th 2008 8:29AM
Sweet!! Here hoping and crossing my fingers for Alpha Centauri 2 next!!
WorMzy @ Jun 10th 2008 4:35PM
About time Colonisation got an update. I loved playing this game back on my Amiga 1200; it's one of my top 10 all time favourite games.
Ben Woerner @ Jun 10th 2008 4:49PM
I want a new Alpha Centauri.
website design @ Jun 11th 2008 5:03AM
I just recently picked the original back up and played it for a few days, still deliciously good after all these years. Also, if you're looking for a fix yourself, check out [freecol](http://www.freecol.org/).
