It's a great day to be a first-person shooter fan. ... Well, more specifically, it's a great day to be a first-person shooter fan who's also totally broke. Not only did (as we previously warned you) the Battlefield: Bad Company demo go up over the weekend, but today we get the Xbox Live demo for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.
So, how is Quake Wars? Well, we haven't taken it for a spin yet, but the reviews say it's at least better than the PS3 version, even if that's not saying a lot. Give both of them a spin for yourself and let us know.

I hope it's good. Bad Company was alright, I think it would be better if I gave it more time.

That's worth looking at for the Fantastic Edward (or whateverthehell her name is) and Ein animated GIF alone.

I played the Battlefield Demo (on PS3) and I wasnt too impressed. I mean its fun, nothing really wrong with it, I just dont see a reason to play this as opposed to COD4. Vehicles I guess.

I played Battelefield BC MP demo over the weekend with buddies and thought it was quite fun actually. Ranked up to lvl 4 :D I wouldn't be surprised if its on LIVES Top 10 this week.

Cool. Played the Battlefield beta and it wasn't worth a purchase to me, but I've been looking to try out quake wars if for no other reason than their awesome monster truck-like ad.

I'll warn you now, Quake Wars sucks. I got the 360 version in from Gamefly last week and sent it back a couple of days later. It's horrible. It honestly looks like it was made using a slightly souped up Quake 2 engine. The controls are also pretty poor, especially for vehicles.

Gamefly is nice, its just too damn expensive and it keeps going up.

Vidikron, I can't really say anything for the console versions controls, but I find it hard to believe that they dumb down the console ports graphics enough that it looked anything like quake 2.

@brokenscope
Well, I did say a "slightly souped up? version of the engine :) Anyway, it's probably been too long since I've played Q2 so that may be a slight exaggeration, but the game really is far below where it should be graphically. For example, Warhawk on the PS3 destroys the game. It has better graphics, larger maps, and better controls. Now, Warhawk doesn't have progressive obectives or different types of characters (e.g. medic, spec ops, etc...), so the games aren't entirely comparable, but I'm just speaking from a graphical/control standpoint here. Both make use of large maps with lots of players and vehicles. I have to think there are better options than QW out there... it's just plain bad.
@Fenix
Yes, it is pretty expensive. I signed up for it this last fall/winter when we had that glut of good games launch. I rationalized it this way... if Gamefly can save me from buying 1 game I would have otherwise bought, that one game pays for 3 months of the service. It's great when lots of good games are launching, but becomes a bit pricey when in the middle of a dry spell and I'm stuck renting crap like Haze and Quake Wars.

Heathens! ;)
Battlefield Bad Company is fantastic. Well the multiplayer at least, I only spent about 5 minutes on the campaign. It makes CoD4 look like a teddy bears picnic.

Tried the BF:BC demo and personally I think it's horrible. The character is slow and the dialogs in the campaign seem to have been written by some high school kid. Didn't know that QW demo was out.
On the other hand, the Ninja Gaiden Demo is out and boy did it convince me to buy the game! The guys at Tecmo did a brilliant job by powering up the three weapons you get from the start, gives a really good impression!
Also tried the Civ demo, which isn't bad at all if you're interested in Civ. In fact, with the new rules (roads and workers) it is almost more like a Risk game than a Civ game, while remaining a Civ game (I know, nothing in what I say makes sense!). A friend of mine actually won by domination before reaching the 1250 A.D. limit, crazy stuff.
And if you want to try something so bad that it's fun, try the "Crash Time" demo.

Quake Wars is considered hardcore even by good PC FPS players. I'm not surprised it wasn't well received on consoles, especially given the apparently poor quality of the port.

I disagree, on PC at least it's actually a very good, hardcore team FPS. There's a steep difficulty curve, and you won't have much fun if you don't play in a well organised team, but once you get better and start making a difference even in a 12-player team... Well not many people have gotten to that point unfortunately.

been playing bf2 Xbox for years. tried the demo and have this to say:
different is bad:
- helicopter controls from BF2 please!
- faster vehicles please
- conquest mode please (not just attack-defendmode)
- bring back in-play weapons inventory
different is good!:
- GTA4 style vehicle driving
- awesome audio quality, graphics
- COD4-borrowed fps controls, like pressing the thumb-stick to run
To get us off the BF2 crack-like addiction faster, I'd like to see the "bad" above turned to "good" in the actual game..

I played Battlefield: Bad Company for 4 hours straight last night! I LOVE that game! I can't wait until it comes out.

on the pc quake wars is one of the best games out right now! they straight butchered it for the consoles! all the 360 an ps3 players are like...well if i can't kill people an get a high score then i don't like it. that's kinda gay cause it's not all about kills...it's about doing your objectives to help your teams ultimate goal in the map! most people on consoles just like run n gun games

Bad Company is the greatest FPS I've ever played, and I've played almost all of 'em. The destructible terrain is amazing. My biggest gripe is that there is no way to disable head bobbing, which has been a feature in BF2 and 2142. I also sorely miss the shock paddles of those games.
