is the iPhone really a viable platform for mobile gaming?? I mean, talk about pricing yourself out of a market

It isn't that they are making a game device - they are making games for the already existant phone. I don't know why so many people at this site jump on it like their psp and ds are being attacked.

Why wouldn't you make games and apps for a device that has sold as many units as this one has? Its a market.

how is $200 priced out of the market? How much is a DS or PSP?

And do the DS and PSP include a phone and gps with their pricing?

Now of course, I don't think DS or PSP have anything to worry about. Especially considering the lack of a directional pad or buttons on the iPhone. But talking about high pricing is just crazy.

I have no plans on retiring my DS. But I'm looking forward to playing some games on my iPhone.

Yes, but does the DS or PSP force you into exclusive and expensive multi-year contracts with sub-par phone companies?

Yes, my DS slapped me in the face and made me get an 18-month Flext contract with T-Mobile. Since that little guy lost some weight, he's really been throwing it about :'(

and one more thing (logorrhea): now the iPhone will cost $199/$299, closer to the price range of handheld gaming devices

That $199 price point is putting the PSP right in the line of fire. For a hardcore PSP gamer like me, that really really sucks.

But now that Sony has a hardcore-portable competitor, they might actually try to DO SOMETHING WITH THE F**KING PSP.

iPhone can only support downloadable games, which severely restricts game size.
iPhone can only support games with purely touch-based controls.

Both of which will severely restrict the games that can be put on the system.

I'm not worried about my PSP being put out of business by the iPhone, not by a long shot. However, I do hope it's a bit of a shot in the arm to get Sony to deliver more games to their handheld system.

Nate

Not really that limited, as the iPhone currently 'supports' movie downloads from the iTunes Store, which are 1-2gigs, so the 'download factor' is not an issue. I think software companies will be able to do what they want to with games or other apps.

How does it control! How can you do button combos with digital touchscreen buttons. If they tried to do something like NG:DS they would need a stylus because you can't do quick strokes with a greasy sweaty finger. Honestly, this game will probably be all show and no game.

You could, perhaps, attempt to wash your hands. Hygiene is a wonderful substitute for a slovenly lifestyle.

Also, don't forget your audience when you write things like "...you can't do quick strokes with a greasy sweaty finger" on a gaming blog.

Hygiene aside, you wouldn't have the same level of accuracy.

Lol, and I see Farseer has found my hidden joke. It was so well hidden, even I didn't see it.

I'm off to do some quick strokes now...

Why are people reacting as if this is a viable gaming handheld equivalent to a DS or a PSP its not. Like any portable phones they are putting games on it to cater to the crowds who choose an Iphone over a PSP and a DS. Nobody who is looking for a portable game machine is going to think Iphone when they are in the store.

It's not in its current form, but it very well could be and it has a wide enough reach to make any CEO sweat at night.

...Just as no one can consider a DS or a PSP as useful as a device like the iPhone. It's not like what you wrote, it's more like this: People who own an iPhone will now have games to buy for it if they want, probably a huge percentage of those people don't even consider owning a DS or a PSP. All three products can co-exist. But while I never carry my PSP or my DS, I always have my phone on me.

Dev's website says it's called "Kroll." Maybe they just changed it, but actually "nightfall dragons" sounds a little more memorable. Wasn't there a Krull?

As for "somewhere between DS and PSP..." gotta say there's a lot of ground there.

Yes, it's a platform, so unless an app is specific to features on the iPhone regarding the mobile-phone radio or say, volume buttons, it will work on the iPod Touch as well.

Amazing. Now the best phone in the world gets better. £99 for the best phone, these things are going to fly off the shelves. When they hit £169 here they were sold out from most stores within a day, after a week there were none left in the UK. Make the phone better and charge less? Holy fuck.
