Just so long as I don't have to see that stupid ad with the "dick thumb" in it again, I'm fine with it.

The PS9 was the first one I thought of! I loved that ad!

Yea, me too. Probably the most memorable game ad for me.

All of the ads have an "edge" to them that makes it seem "cool" to be a Playstation fan, but at the same time it seems to tell the young and old "Stay away. This isn't for you" like some kind of loud dance club you'd find downtown.
Compare these ads to Nintendo's Wii videos you find at Circuit City stores or Wal-mart. I think Nintendo's video campaign should at least be emulated to some extent by Sony.

What you just complained about is WHY Sonys advertising has done so well. To quote an early Sony Marketer...
"With the PSX brand, we specifically targetted the 21 year old because that's the perfect age everyone wants to be. If you're younger, you want to be 21 for all the privelages and coolness it provides. If you're older, you want to be that young again."

17 is better than 21 - you can still bang minors which is why you dont care about going to bars

Awesome, awesome stuff. Sonys marketing is only 2nd to Segas IMO.

I used to LOVE Sony commercials. They were funny, catchy, and most importantly, they got their point across to the target audience. In the PS/PS2 days I thought their campaigns were the best of all the big videogame names. Now, not so much. Though the ad campaign listed at number ten was actually pretty good.

I loved number 10, 2, and 1. 2 was PS9, and 1 was double-life.

No.10 was typical Americana "badass" commercialization - nothing new here whatsoever.
9 has nothing to do with gaming at all. I've never cared for commercials that appeal simply for the sake of "art" rather than the product being advertised. It's an uncreative and pathetic attempt to appear edgey while proving their inability to meld innovation with product.
8 is actually not bad. Clever, in fact.
7 is an iPod commercial. And pointless.
6 just seems very ineffective and a waste of time. However, it is mildly humorous.
5 would've been great since it utilized the scenario many of us have experienced and can commiserate on - the guy who won't shut the hell up about what to do when playing a game. Unfortunately, Sony's worthless ad department plagiarizes and bastardizes a Dell/Twix hybrid with the voiceover classic stoner grumbling in low idiocy "Dude, get your own." Awful.
4 is great. Everyone had seen the commercials and even those who weren't involved in gaming circles could quickly and easily recall the real life use of video game weapon paraphernalia.
3 was also quite effective. The trademark circle, square, triangle and 'x' buttons became solidified as Sony's own through these ads.
2 is cool but wholly meaningless.
And finally, no.1. While I feel unsure as to whether it was effective marketing in reaching out to a wider gaming base, it did speak directly to existing gamers everywhere. At the very least, I doubt that hurted Sony's sales.

Wow, I said "hurted" - I'm ashamed. Please ignore the "ed" at the end. Please.

I liked all of the ads on the best list except #5. Seriously, I hate the "Dude, Get Your Own" ads. From the way the people act to the slogan itself.
The commercials don't feel like a "real" situation to me. Not with how the crazy-obsessive guy acts. The way he talks makes him sound more like a guerilla marketer than a game fan.
Those commercials made me want to:
1) Punch the crazy guy
2) Punch the PSP-holding guys for NOT punching the crazy guy
3) Punch whoever came up with these ads.
They certainly didn't want me to buy a PSP, that's for sure.
(the games and the homebrew did, though)

Not a single ps3 ad ranks as "good". I find that telling.
