Mario Super Sluggers features new characters, super moves
Mario's baseball-oriented outing hasn't exactly been as hotly anticipated as his other platforming, racing, and fighting adventures. Perhaps that's the reason info on Mario Super Sluggers has been a bit slow since the first mild announcement last October. Those who do have a penchant for wacky sports titles will be elated at these few new details, courtesy of Siliconera.
According to their report, the game's cavalcade of Super Mario staples will each have their own unique batting and pitching powers. Mario swings away with a feisty fireball, while Yoshi pitches in an arching rainbow.
Tiny screens also reveal a number of less-than-obvious character additions, like the residents of Delfino Island, Dixie Kong, and... Goombas. If anyone knows how the armless baddies of Mushroom Kingdom are expected to either bat, throw, or catch, please let us know.

Maybe the Goombas could be the bases?
sicsided @ Jun 11th 2008 2:40AM
that would be quite awesome. Perhaps if you hit them right-on or something you could get a speed boost?
Purple Haze @ Jun 11th 2008 2:45AM
Man you just scored a homerun!
themostsolidsnake @ Jun 11th 2008 2:30AM
hahah that would be awesome.
Andre Segers @ Jun 11th 2008 2:41AM
Umm, you guys know this isn't the first Mario Baseball gam, right? And most of those characters were in the previous one.
The bats just float in front of the goombas, fyi. And oddly enough, when you pull back a charged bat, it looks like the goomba has a raging boner.
...Jan... @ Jun 11th 2008 3:36AM
At least I'm not the only one who thought that...Yet the Paragoombas held them normally over their shoulder. I think someone at Nintendo felt like putting in some innuendo.
Goombas and Piantas were in the first game.
Ian Murray @ Jun 11th 2008 9:51AM
Yeah, seriously.
Did this person not even SEE Super Mario Baseball?
I mean...it had ALL of these characters doing ALL of these moves.
If anything, this should have been a post about how none of this is original.
The Truth @ Jun 11th 2008 2:55AM
I didn't know Waluigi was a homosexual.
Burnt Meatloaf @ Jun 11th 2008 3:02AM
The Truth hurts.

You'd think he wouldn't be, being the opposite of Luigi, who is so obviously flaming gay now.
beatboxtaun @ Jun 11th 2008 9:41AM
No, not my Luigi! I refuse to believe it. *earmuffs*
Orionsaint @ Jun 11th 2008 2:55AM
I'm sick of Nintendo doing this. One big Mario game per console generation. Then hundreds of mediocre Mario games, like Mario golf, Mario soccer, Mario Baseball, Mario dance club, Mario counts, Mario's spelling bee, Mario's fit club revolution etc. Bleh!
Burnt Meatloaf @ Jun 11th 2008 3:01AM
Well, why don't you do your patriotic gaming duty and start a picket line outside each store selling these games? It's not Nintendo's fault the public has such crappy taste.
The Truth @ Jun 11th 2008 3:25AM
But that's not the case when the games are GOOD and FUN. Granted Strikers is my first foray into Mario sport titles I found it fookin brilliant to play and only a few marks below Mario Kart.
Shadow El @ Jun 11th 2008 10:48AM
"Mario's Spelling Bee"
Starring Bee Mario? I'd buy it.
Tim The Enchanter @ Jun 11th 2008 10:49AM
Yeah, you know I'd agree but for Strikers. That game is awesome.
Imaginationland Warrior @ Jun 11th 2008 11:18AM
There is a reason for there being like 20 party/sports Mario games to 1 real Mario game. Fans of Mario eats all of them up and they make lots of money and probably doesn't take long to make. Real Mario games costs lots of money and takes years to make.
I actually don't mind the real Marios being few and far between. Five years between each one keeps fans really excited.
HighFiveJesus @ Jun 11th 2008 2:59AM
careful there nintendo, if this tread continues, i expect to see another mario tennis, and mario golf to round out your latest versions of mario kart, mario soccer and mario baseball. i REALLY wish Nintendo would take the wii sports premise and develop full fledged non kiddy oriented sports. i think they have the best grip on the controls.
Burnt Meatloaf @ Jun 11th 2008 3:02AM
That costs money! BAAAAAW!
embassy @ Jun 11th 2008 3:28AM
surprise surprise.
Roxinos @ Jun 11th 2008 4:18AM
*sigh* I love Nintendo. But screw them. Screw Nintendo and their repetitive and gimmicky first party titles. Screw them and their relative inability to create quality third party titles. And most of all, screw them for giving me hope in their ability to be unique, while recycling the same games over and over with a new twist. Wario Ware, Wii Fit/Sports/Play, any Mario-titled game, I'm looking at you.
Trippy Haps @ Jun 11th 2008 4:57AM
If Nintendo created a third-party title, wouldn't that make it a first-pa...nevermind...
Look, I feel your pain, man. But at the end of the day, Nintendo is a business. Their job is to make money. Consumers are eating up these casual, party-type games like HOTCAKES, so Nintendo would be insane to stop. And as far as whoring out the ole plumber...these games would be coming out regardless of what character they tacked onto 'em...but Mario is a household name. A safe bet. A comfortable, wholesome, adorable little guy that generations of gamers ((hardcore and casual)) recognize. Let's stop being so pissed at Nintendo guys and face facts: When something is popular, you'll see it everywhere. Cereal boxes, happy meals, movies, crappy Saturday morning cartoons, etc. ((Look at your icon for crying out loud))
Should we be upset that Nintendo decides to turn a profit by pushing out these types of games? No. Even if we consider them low quality, the majority apparently do not because THESE THINGS ARE SELLING. So long as other people enjoy it, what's the big deal? Doesn't mean you have to buy it.
Now a cause TO be upset is the small amount of games out for the Wii that are story-driven and feature unique, engaging gameplay mechanics. ((There are some, but there should be a lot more by now.))
religiousjedi @ Jun 11th 2008 4:33AM
Mario doesn't belong on the diamond...or any sports related game.
Even Kart pushes it. Stay to the platforming you fat plumber! You'll lose weight faster that way!
Nerds With Attitude @ Jun 11th 2008 4:37AM
Oh good, just what the Mario series needed; more annoying characters and gimmicky special moves.
Would it be too much to ask that you just make NSMB 2 instead?
koehler83\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s dad @ Jun 11th 2008 5:33AM
You mean like the giant and tiny mushrooms in NSMB?
Nostromo @ Jun 11th 2008 6:03AM
They got mouths don't they?!
T @ Jun 11th 2008 10:49AM
If a Boo can drive a cart or motorcycle...a Goomba can swing a baseball bat.
rodrigo @ Jun 11th 2008 9:38AM
hahahahahahahahaha i bet that fernando is excited about this game :p. next big game mario lifting weights??

Mario Sluggers=blah!
Nintendo Sluggers(Mario characters + Namco +SEGA)=awesome.
Booxatron @ Jun 11th 2008 2:40PM
How about Super Smash Bros. Sluggers....
If I could hit a home run with Solid Snake, I'd pretty much just drown to death in my own ejaculate...
(Shit, I hope I didn't just say that out loud)
WRE (PSN: WorstReviewEver; Gamertag: HaloKissesBoys; Wii Friend Code: 4204-4590-6106-3583) @ Jun 11th 2008 10:37AM
I'll probably get it. I'm not sure what everyone is so upset about. Mario sports games are the only sports games that there's even a chance I would buy. Case in point, I hate soccer but love Strikers. Now, if they would just make a Mario football game...
Shadow El @ Jun 11th 2008 10:49AM
I thought the point of Wii Sports was to PREVENT an excess of Mario Sports games like these. *shrug*
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 11th 2008 11:40AM
But if they did that then Nintendo wouldn't be able to charge $40-$50 for games like this and take advantage of people's bad tastes.
Terry @ Jun 11th 2008 11:42AM
It's simple, actually. Real baseball is hard and boring. VERY BORING. To jazz it up and make it actually fun to play or watch you've got to add flaming rainbows and glittering ponies and crazy stuff. And if you're adding crazy stuff, you might as well use characters people know and love. I'll gladly buy a whole new round of "Mario (Blank)" every hardware cycle, because the games are always polished and fun. Mario Tennis was about a thousand times more fun than Top Spin. If you want a sim-style sports game, ask a third party.
Mario and the citizens are the Mushroom Kingdom are the Bugs Bunny/Mickey Mouse/Woody Woodpecker of our age. Simple as that.
KeenCommander @ Jun 11th 2008 12:00PM
Golf people! GOLF! Idiots at Nintendo, give us bloody Mario Gold - no one cares about this baseball crap.

First off, Mario Super Sluggers DOES NOT have online play. There is no way I will buy it now.
The 2nd problem is many Wii Owners bought the Wii because of WII sports not MARIO SPORTS. We are sick and tired of the Mario games. I expected for Nintendo to have created some Wii Sports full Baseball, Full Tennis, Full Bowling, etc.
Instead, Nintendo is just putting out more of the same "wacky Mario Sports" games.
Nintendo is winning the console war but I am afraid they are going to blow it. People are still waiting for more of what came with their Wii and it hasnt happened.
Also, online play has been the standard is all games outside of Nintendo for years. I hope a lot of people do not buy this game because of the lack of online play. Nintendo does not listen to their customers but they will listen if it hurts them where i counts -- in their pocketbook.
Mario Sports Lover @ Jun 26th 2008 9:43PM
Mario Sports spice up a sport a lot.
Kuattro @ Jul 16th 2008 1:34PM
I've played the one for the GC, and the game was not bad. For some reason mario sports game are always fun but they always lack the online community play. I would probably buy the game if it's online, but if Nintendo can't give it online then I don't know. There's this free baseball game online that I play called Real baseball. The game needs some improvement, but you're getting a lot for a free game. They host challenges, tournaments and leagues. These are the kind of things that you can only dream about on wii. Well, we'll see how Mario Super Slugger do.
