Wal-Mart corporate confirms $100 PS3 gift card -- YES, even the MGS 4 bundle

After we made sure to ask about the MGS4 bundle this morning, Melissa O'Brien, a spokeswoman for Wal-Mart, told us, "Any Blu-ray player. Blu-ray. All of them." She said that the deal is quite explicit in the Wal-Mart flyer for this week (an image of which we've placed after the break), and the deal is both online and in stores. We hope this clears up any confusion on the matter.

That is pretty sweet... now if only I could convince the lady to agree to the purchase....

So I’m not really that tech savvy and could use a little help from anyone who might be able to help me out. I know SirFid seems pretty good with this stuff, but again, if anyone can offer some help, it would be great and very appreciated.
I’ve got an old 40GB PS3 with a few games I downloaded onto the hard drive through PSN. However, I am going to sell it for $325 my friend offered and pick up this offer since I want an 80GB, the BC, a DS3 and MGS4. The point is, is there any way to transfer the games I have downloaded onto my new 80GB without having to purchase them again? Can I just transfer it to a backup harddrive then back onto my 80G and it will work fine?
loungemonkey @ Jun 11th 2008 11:50AM
There is a backup option on the PS3...just plug in an external HDD and choose back up.
Look in the manual if you are having problems.
Korova *Pyro aspect* @ Jun 11th 2008 11:58AM
overstock.com has a deal on 80gigers. I saw yesterday.
Ben @ Jun 11th 2008 11:59AM
Same here...maybe we could try the "but I bought it for you" line?
baby sea tuna @ Jun 11th 2008 12:08PM
Come on now, you know that never works.
See Marge Simpson's "Homer" bowling ball as an example.
skidawg @ Jun 11th 2008 12:08PM
@loungemonkey
thanks. didn't realize it was that simple
tjlenz @ Jun 11th 2008 12:10PM
@skidawg
All you will have to do is make a new user on your new PS3 and set it up with your PSN account. Then log onto the store and download the games or what not again. You can have your games on up to 5 PS3s and download them as much as you need on those 5 machines.
GreenMan13 @ Jun 11th 2008 10:37AM
I just returned my PS3 to target and got this deal from Best Buy with there price match on Friday! Free MGS4 here I come!
elindiano @ Jun 11th 2008 10:40AM
did best buy give you a 100 dollar giftcard or did they take 100 bucks off the total price???
elindiano @ Jun 11th 2008 10:39AM
time to upgrade!
Knoxximus @ Jun 11th 2008 10:40AM
w00t!
Magarnacle @ Jun 11th 2008 10:41AM
Does anyone know if Walmart Canada is the same??
That would be sweet.
Viridium @ Jun 11th 2008 11:51AM
Let me know if you find out...
Alexisonfire @ Jun 11th 2008 1:20PM
I wouldn't think so, as you can't even order stuff from Wal-mart.ca. And even if they do have the deal in Canada, the incompetence of my town's Wal-mart has yet to be matched by any other location I've visited.
So... no free Uncharted and DMC4 for me.
nick @ Jun 11th 2008 10:44AM
This offer lasts until June 14th, and if I'm not mistaken, is given in the form of an online gift card to purchase something from walmart.com
Technically, you're still buying the PS3 at full price, but then you get a gift card to buy an additional $100 worth of items from Walmart.
Mike D @ Jun 11th 2008 10:49AM
Yea but who doesnt need $100 worth of stuff at walmart?
Brandon @ Jun 11th 2008 10:55AM
Not quite correct nick.
If you purchase online it's an online giftcard.
If you purchase in store it's a regular giftcard that can be used in store or online.
Kaiser Salsa @ Jun 11th 2008 10:51AM
If you purchase the ps3 at the Walmart store, they give you a $100 walmart giftcard good for any product at Walmart (not just blu-ray, infact my giftcard said 'happy birthday' lol). You do not have to use it at walmart.com website. Now if you purchase the ps3 from www.walmart.com then yes, you get an online giftcare that can only be used online.
and yes i've heard many people have great success doing a price match at Best Buy where Best Buy will give you a $100 best buy gift card. They do not just knock $100 off the price.
Cellien @ Jun 11th 2008 2:27PM
I'd rather buy from Walmart and use the $100 gift card for their gas station. :)
Neon Jebus @ Jun 11th 2008 10:46AM
I just picked up a PS3 this week on that deal. I mean sure it was the 40GB model but I figured it was a good deal.
It's odd being a big 360 user trying out the PS3 for the first time. What is up with downloading a demo or game only to have to manually install it? Talk about a buzz kill. What else am I going to do with the file?
Kaiser Salsa @ Jun 11th 2008 10:56AM
I felt the same way! I was like "wow I have to wait (what felt like) 10 minutes for the Haze demo to install after I've already downloaded it?"
and of course it SUCKED!!! lol installing it was more exciting than playing it. The only joy I got was watching the 'nectar' spray out of my teammates when I melee them in the back and they go bonkers.
but OMG, PSP & PS3 remote play with a networked PC is awesome!!!
borland502 (SDF - Macross Ring) @ Jun 11th 2008 11:00AM
Yep, the installation step is an annoyance, but I file it up there with complaining about disc changing on the 360. It's a detraction, but not the basis for the system purchase.
borland502 (SDF - Macross Ring) @ Jun 11th 2008 11:04AM
That step is also weird for the fact that they could have simply performed the extraction in the background and only the pixel counting junkies would know or care about it.
Neon Jebus @ Jun 11th 2008 11:13AM
borland,
I see what you are saying but I've never had a 1.3GB download take 2 hours on Xbox Live. Even when I used a wireless connection. It was SLOW. The install took another 15 minutes.
It doesn't take me 15 minutes to get off the couch and change the disk in my 360. But I'm trying to be open minded about the PS3. There are lots of things I like about it. But I would be the first to admit I made the jump for the Blu-Ray, not the games. At least until a Twisted Metal game comes out!
Sir Fidlious Wong (Justin T. McElroy Memorial Burn of the Day Award) @ Jun 11th 2008 11:25AM
Something may be wrong with your PS3 connection then. I'd look at the Sony website as they have a huge section on how to configure your router the best way to get the most amount of bandwidth. Of the three, 360 was the easiest to set up as both Wii and DS are very particular whereas PS3 has only a few minor complaints.
But yeah, it does seem EXTREMELY slow. Like I get a 1.5GB demo down in about 30-40minutes and install is about five minutes at most.
borland502 (SDF - Macross Ring) @ Jun 11th 2008 11:28AM
"I see what you are saying but I've never had a 1.3GB download take 2 hours on Xbox Live."
Fair enough, but the PS3 adopts a more PC like online approach. Think of downloading demos or patches on the PC...you don't pay for it, but the length of time can vary wildly. Even Silver Live users are piggybacking off the network funded by Gold users.
Since demos come out on a fixed, known schedule you also run into the problem of competing with others for bandwidth on the PSN. Hopefully, the PSN can find a balance between free and fast without having to tap advertising so hard it ends up looking like a Geocities website.
I think you'll find the PSN works well for you too, assuming the 360 will remain your primary multiplayer console. The PC is my multiplayer machine, so I'm content with the tradeoffs.
Cellien @ Jun 11th 2008 2:33PM
Wow, I can't believe you have to install demos! This is instance where it's obvious MS has the strong software background.
Sesur @ Jun 11th 2008 9:22PM
I was also enticed to buy a PS3 by this offer.
The differences between the 360 and the PS3 are pretty big... and I have to admit, my new PS3 annoys me. I had some horrible networking problems from day one. Downloads are sloooooooow. And the stupid manual install... what's up with that?
I'm trying to love my PS3, but I've been conditioned to the 360. I knew I'd buy one eventually, but I'm starting to think I might have too soon
Neon Jebus @ Jun 11th 2008 10:48AM
The online gift card was the deal last week. I went into an actual Wal-Mart to purchase my PS3 and was issued the $100 gift card to be used in store.
ApolloIV @ Jun 11th 2008 10:58AM
But if you buy a PS3 online you should still get an online 100 dollar gift card.
FOXHOUND @ Jun 11th 2008 10:59AM
If the online one is over, are they still doing it in-store? And for 40 or 80GB?
Neon Jebus @ Jun 11th 2008 11:00AM
I'm sure it is. The comment was a reply to nick but the reply button decided to not play nice with me.
McWeen @ Jun 11th 2008 11:06AM
Awesome deal but I am guessing they will be hard to come by unless you 'camp out' for them. As someone with a normal day job I guess I can only dream...
krissh @ Jun 11th 2008 11:07AM
Is the bundle available ONLINE at walmart.com??? I DONT SEE IT
The stores near me dont seem to have the bundle either . DAMN
Pandar @ Jun 11th 2008 11:08AM
Well this sucks for me, no close by walmarts and the MGS4 bundle isn't available online. Anyone know if walmart will be stocking up on their online inventory?
ApolloIV @ Jun 11th 2008 11:04AM
MGS 4 bundle isn't online? Hmm this could damper my plans.
meledeo @ Jun 11th 2008 11:38AM
Not available until midnight tonight.
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 11th 2008 11:12AM
This is pretty sweet actually. Can you then purchase something for $100 with that card and return it later for a cash refund? I'm almost sure I did this with a $50 gift card I got from my job last year.
RBecho @ Jun 11th 2008 11:21AM
Nope, Walmart knows how you paid and will return it in the same form. So odds are you will just get the "cash" reloaded onto a gift card.
Maybe if you sweet talk to return guy they may give you cash, but I doubt it. Some places just default the gift card even if you pay with another form to get you to come back.
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 11th 2008 11:35AM
Either way its a great deal. Buy the PS3, get the giftcard. Then go and buy MGS4, a pack of underwear, maybe some leanpockets and a 12 pack of beer or for Teh Freez!!! Gotta love Wal-Mart lol!
Noshino @ Jun 11th 2008 11:42AM
"underwear, maybe some leanpockets and a 12 pack of beer"
Im really hoping that isn't your list of videogame session necessities...
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 11th 2008 11:51AM
LOL Noshino, nah I was actually trying to mix up the diff kinds of crap you can get at WallyWorld buddy. I don't do the lean pockets, but beer? In the words of deaftly's avatar (Kool-Aid Man) Ohhhhhhh Yeaahhhhhh!!!
Noshino @ Jun 11th 2008 12:18PM
Sadly, Im not into alcoholic beverages, the only that I liked was on a trip to Turkey last year.
But yah, mini bar is in the living room! whoever came up with the idea of a mini fridge should be given more credit, I don't know what life what have been having to put a huge fridge right on the living room....
deaftly @ Jun 11th 2008 12:42PM
Beer?
OHHHHHHH YEEEEEEAAAAAAAHHHHH!
Wise Guy @ Jun 11th 2008 11:32AM
Wow! PS3 and a free movie (MGS4)..... Who wouldn't want that? Now all we need on the system is games!! :-)
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 11th 2008 11:36AM
Oh, so you wanna be a wise guy eh? lol
BlackFreefall @ Jun 11th 2008 11:38AM
Yeaa...pun of the day!
