Sagacious advice from the MGS4 install screen
In case you were thinking of skipping the approximately 8-minute install (which also translates to 4 or 5 cigarettes for our aged hero) and making a sandwich, consider the little bit of humor you'd be missing. If you're still undeterred and plan to ignore the game while it installs, check out our gallery for the sagacious and spoiler-free advice.
While some of it is a bit mundane, there are some rather humorous tidbits scattered about. For instance, how does one take a break every 15-minutes when cut-scenes run longer than that? [By pausing, you troll! - Ed]

It doesn't say break every fifteen minutes. It says fifteen-minute break every hour.
I should probably get going if I wanna be at Wal*Mart by midnight PST. Thankfully, I live in a fairly small town, so even if my local Wal*Mart only gets a single PS3 bundle there's a good chance I can buy it myself.
Covarr @ Jun 12th 2008 3:39AM
I live in a town of morons. There were about 10 people in line at Gamestop, and 5 at Wal*Mart, with me being last. Fortunately, my Wal*Mart got 6, while Gamestop only got 2. All the people who stood out in the cold for nothing are probably feeling pretty stupid right now.
McWeen @ Jun 12th 2008 9:08AM
I snapped one up at my local Walmart this morning also. Now what to spend the $100 Gift Card on...

Man, I could go for a cool, smooth, Laramie right now.

That Flintstones clip was hilarious. Also, how can it say take a break every hour when MGS is basically a film, anyway?

My Wal Mart didn't get any in at all. They have quite a few MGS4 bundles, but no games. They said to expect them in 2 or 3 days.

I love how it has a smoking warning that basically doesn't tell you not to smoke, just to "have consideration for others when choosing to smoke", LOL.
Thats great, light 'em up kids!!
Sir Fidlious Wong (Justin T. McElroy Memorial Burn of the Day Award) @ Jun 12th 2008 11:40AM
Kids?!? Isn't this an M-Rated game?
Besides, here's the deal. If you don't know smoking is bad for you when you do it, then you've been living in a cave the entire of my life because the anti-smoking message has ALWAYS been around since I was three and could remember this. The bigger message that should be spread is "If you smoke, keep it to yourself."
nealbailey @ Jun 12th 2008 12:44PM
"because the anti-smoking message has ALWAYS been around since I was three and could remember this"
So what are you now? 12?
I went to high school in Virginia where we had designated smoking areas at school and used to socialize with our teachers over a few smokes between classes.
Maybe things were different in the North but in tobacco country people still smoke just about everywhere and have only recently become inundated with anti-smoking message.
BTW: in 1990, my school district finally banned smoking on school property (though the faculty could still use the smoking facilities)
Sir Fidlious Wong (Justin T. McElroy Memorial Burn of the Day Award) @ Jun 12th 2008 2:19PM
I'm 28, actually. And no, only recently have people finally started hooking onto the anti-smoking message..
HOWEVER, you cannot claim ignorance when the warnings were in the ads, on the posters, on the package, on many mainstream cigarette lighters, in the Joe Camel Camel Bucks catalogues, etc. The message of cigarettes being bad for you has been shown and mimmicked since the early 60s. People never really caught onto the message but the message was there. Claiming it wasn't holds the same validity as "I didn't know eating McDonalds three times a day would make you fat..."

And remember, if you're feeling sick stop playing the game immediately.
So you can go and have a nice, calming, relaxing, body soothing, yummy cigarette.
SolitudeSeraph @ Jun 12th 2008 8:50AM
There are actually multiple 3 minute installs for each act later on too.
Noshino @ Jun 12th 2008 12:21PM
mutiple? there is only one install before each chapter...and in average they are 2 minutes...
Actually, I think is 3-3-2-1
xGeneral DEATHx @ Jun 12th 2008 8:58AM
NOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Before I read this, I was unaware that you must press the X button to crouch/lie prone/stand back up! Thanks for the spoiler, Joystiq!
By the way, that cigarette warning is priceless. :-)
eNrique @ Jun 13th 2008 2:24AM
in fact this a readable version of the EULA
mattclarkie @ Jun 12th 2008 9:01AM
But while I have paused the game for my 15minute break I cause burn-in on my TV.
Guess I better keep playing to prevent damage to my TV. I mean I can always get another set of eyes.
NATO_Duke @ Jun 12th 2008 12:26PM
Here's a little trick I came up with for that: Turn the t.v. off during the breaks you take. Works like a charm
Huh war what is it good for absolutely everythign @ Jun 12th 2008 9:02AM
LOL, installing games. No wonder sony tried to push the PS3 in Europe as a PC. It wasn't for tax reasons either honest!
UnnDunn @ Jun 12th 2008 9:04AM
"Burn-in is more likely to occur if a still image is left on-screen for an extended period of time."
What, you mean like the install screen?
Sorry, I couldn't help it.
Huh war what is it good for absolutely everythign @ Jun 12th 2008 9:09AM
If sony fans buy demos and promotional podcasts then they're probably also likely to buy another TV just because of their console of choice.
John @ Jun 12th 2008 9:23AM
I like how they say "non lcd" projection tv, because Dlp don't get burn in either and sony doesn't make DLP TVs.
They totally pretend a segment of the market doesn't exist.
Simply awesome.
I would have preferred a warning stating "playing this game is a pretty good indication of a low IQ, go get a test"
Vcize @ Jun 12th 2008 10:06AM
Haha yeah, I was gonna say....since when the hell does burn-in happen on DLPs?
Poisoned Al @ Jun 12th 2008 1:03PM
Hehe, yeah. At least they stopped short of saying "you should play this on a Sony TV, or the clowns will get you!"
Ian @ Jun 12th 2008 9:35AM
Ummmm...It does not say "every 15 minutes".
It says 15 minutes every hour.......
BIG difference!
Farseer (GDI) @ Jun 12th 2008 9:44AM
So, how does one twist their head around this statement:
[Usage Warning]
This game is intended for use exclusively with the Playstation 3 system.
Now, if this statement were on the box, it would be completely understandable. But it is on screen. While you are installing the game on a PS3. From a Blu-ray disc. There is no way that one could ever conceivably see this message on anything other than a PS3.
With this and the disc-swapping dig, is Konamai trying to convince us that PS3 exclusivity was a good idea? Or are they just trying to convince themselves?
UnnDunn @ Jun 12th 2008 9:49AM
Um... I think that particular warning is supposed to be mildly humorous.
Farseer (GDI) @ Jun 12th 2008 9:52AM
Right on. I'll give them that. Unfortunately, if the warning is an attempt at humor, I fear for the forthcoming dialogue...
Cyro @ Jun 12th 2008 10:16AM
lol!
wolfey @ Jun 12th 2008 9:55AM
Cool, i want this game soooo bad :(
It sucks that MGS4 has been delayed by Konami for a complete week in Spain, because of a transport strike... -.-

LAzy ass Spaniards.
baby sea tuna @ Jun 12th 2008 10:52AM

murph @ Jun 12th 2008 10:07AM
this game is encouraging kids to smoke!! protest! pull the game! call JT!
Ted @ Jun 12th 2008 10:16AM
It's routine for some groups in European coutrys to strike. Somehow, it usually happens in the summer. Hmmmm...
I too don't lkie the smoking thing. But then again, whats the rating on the game? Is it M?
DEEZNUTZ @ Jun 12th 2008 10:14AM
Those install screens make me want to smoke again... I feel sorry for anyone who is trying to quit.
Pass me a Virginia slims ultra light menthol please.

Why not just eat a mint then breathe through a pair of dirty gym socks for 7 minutes?

farce83 @ Jun 12th 2008 11:59AM
i called all of my local walmarts (i live in the tampa area so there are a few) and they all said they didnt have any bundles. either they were lying on the phone or they had no idea that the 80gb bundle was coming back. I read these comments where people just walked in and got one, or one where they have bundles and no games. this sucks, why can't i get one? i am going to try again after work and see what happens
NATO_Duke @ Jun 12th 2008 12:30PM
I am in Chicago and I stopped at the Best Buy in Downer's Grove, off of I-88 and saw they had a lot of the game and a group of the bundles in store. They also told me they had 80 people there for the midnight launch.
I bought a copy and saw 3 other people buy a copy at the same time. One got the bundle. I then went by the gamestop out of curiosity and there were 2 people buying it and another calling in for the special edition while I was there for 5 minutes.
It looks like the sales of this on day one are pretty good!
Ordeith @ Jun 12th 2008 12:35PM
So there are hummingbirds in the MGS4 installation screens?
Shagittarius @ Jun 12th 2008 2:01PM
Thanks to joystiq I now hate hummingbirds.
Noshino @ Jun 12th 2008 3:08PM
Why do you think Snake is smoking?
