Transport strike leaves Spain MGS4-less

Just to give a wider picture of the situation, 90,000 Spanish truckers started striking Monday to protest soaring fuel costs, particularly diesel gasoline. The strike caused shortages of all truck-driven goods in the country (which is pretty much everything), but it appears the situation may be over soon.

Take both, their PS3 and computer, and submerge them in water

It's not like their higher-ups can do anything about fuel costs for the actual truckers. They should be bitching to OPEC instead

In the position of being the main way things get anywhere in a country does put pressure on that country's leaders. Those countries leaders then need to do something because they rest of the civilians become unhappy... What they are doing is effective. Just imagine if the truck drivers of America all went on strike? Granted the highway would be more pleasent to drive for the more skittish drivers... But it would be catastrophic...
Knight Marquise @ Jun 12th 2008 2:17PM
Mr Khan,
Agreed; however, I suspect it's many things causing this uptick in oil prices.
Politics, Opec, and local/state/federal oppresive environmental concerns within all our countries. Let's face it when the US oil capacity has dropped 50% over the last 20 years, yet demand has increased 30%, that's going to have a negative impact on pricing.
What's espcially damning, at least in the US, is that we do have the resources & technology; whether it's coal to gasoline or shale oil, that my understanding could be produced and delivered between $40-$60 barrel.
While it may not have been "good business" when Saudi oil was $30.00/barrel, at $135.00/barrel, it makes me wonder why we're not doing it.
Sir Fidlious Wong (Justin T. McElroy Memorial Burn of the Day Award) @ Jun 12th 2008 2:41PM
Because when Oil was $30 a barrel, they made a 7% profit margin. Now that oil is $135 a barrel, they make 6% profit margin. In other words, though the higher of gas has a huge strain on our local ecomony, value of the dollar, dramatically increased cost of living compared the the relatively small (possibly even microscopic) increase in wages, significant impact on our housing market, and in general bad times all around to a stagnating ecomony, all of that bad stuff doesn't effect oil companies in the slightest. They're making 6% of profit on $135 a barrel oil. Do you really think they want to make 7% of half the cost?
Knight Marquise @ Jun 12th 2008 3:06PM
Shepp...
Your point is well taken, and I do understand the economics from the corporations point of view. Nevertheless, we do have, IMHO, too restrictive environmental policies which only hurt ourselves, and the oil companies can and are falling back on those policies which are helping to sustain the substantially higher cost of energy.
Personally, I think we should be self reliant for our energy, and truthfully there's not a valid reason that we are so dependant when the resources are here, and we have the safe technology to extract those resources for far less then what we're paying now....that's when your point of self economic interests come to bear.

Kinda reminds me when they privatized water in Bolivia. God game them water and it was even illegal for them to gaver rain for normal water use. And guess what, that idea came from the U.S. We'll slap a price tag on anything. The people fought it and they overcame.
Vidikron (FU) @ Jun 12th 2008 2:23PM
It's not illegal to collect rain water here. And water for drinking needs to be cleaned. That costs money.
beatboxtaun @ Jun 12th 2008 2:29PM
Exactly, and I will pay for clean water. Leave it up to the U.S. to come up with an idea like that. Sorry, I'm not ok with paying the gas prices I'm paying.
Watch the Coorporation. It's a documentary.

Did everyone else get their copy of MGS4 only to find out it has an 'antique' color filter? How can I change this in the options? :P
I keed, I keed!
Seriously, after watching reviews and a lot of new gameplay on this mother on GT I cant wait to get my hands on it. Its just that I'm a little broke rightnow rightnow. :( But laterlater...
Martez @ Jun 12th 2008 2:47PM
I'm in a similar boat. I will not be playing it until the 19/20th. Sad.
Marty @ Jun 12th 2008 2:49PM
I know that this post is not 100% serious, but if I were a Spaniard, I'd be more worried about food and survival goods than games.
Robert @ Jun 12th 2008 2:58PM
if I were a Spaniard I will be more worried to die by starvation before playing MGS4. jaja joking too
SAKY @ Jun 12th 2008 3:09PM
they have bigger problems over there, like getting food into stores and such.
riggs @ Jun 12th 2008 3:24PM
fernando had something to do with this.....im SURE!
Rauten @ Jun 12th 2008 3:34PM
If I were a spaniard.. wait... I AM A SPANIARD oh my gosh the internets! I wouldn't give a shit, and I don't give a shit, and my family doesn't give a shit, about food and survival goods because strike or not, we have plenty fuckington of those for a really long time. At least in my town.
There IS people that freaked out and started emptying stores, but guess what, they refilled, because they have more stuff in their wharehouses, and not ALL transporters are on strike.
So yeah, MGS4 being delayed probably feels like a kick to the balls for a friend of mine that was obsessed with the damn game. =D I just wonder how many retards will start blaming Konami for this, even though they're not even remotely connected to the issue.
angelkanarias @ Jun 12th 2008 3:50PM
that's true
angelkanarias @ Jun 12th 2008 3:43PM
I am from Spain, I am not really affected for the food supplies because I live at the Canary Islands (that is a long way from the strike zone), but I am affected about the games not being transported here, because they come from the Peninsula (the place were the strike zone is occurring), that sucks.
Alex @ Jun 12th 2008 5:21PM
"Not actual striking Spanish truckers pictured"
Brilliant.
Do you lot get paid extra for all of these mind-numbing photoshop sessions that you must have to undertake?
I remember the HD DVD and Blu-Ray pictures that Engadget posted. Some funny:http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/19/official-hd-dvd-dead-and-buried-format-war-is-over/
Others...not so much:http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/19/toshiba-no-plans-to-adopt-blu-ray/

LOLLOOLOLOLOL and Spanish ppl aint lazy.... LMFAO YES I SAID IT
Leinad @ Jun 12th 2008 5:30PM
Its not just in Spain. In Portugal the trukers are also on "strike" (its not rly a strike, its a paralisation) and that made for many gas stations to dry out completly! In the last couple of days people were all rushing to fill up their tanks and big lines were seen in almost all gas stations of the country! Also, many products ran out of stock in big supermarkets and likes. But worst off all (lol), I'm still wainting for my Ninja Gaiden 2 copy that I reserved at a local "Game" store. Aparently it is delayded because its still stuck in Spain and hasnt crossed the border to Portugal yet...
Vinnie_PT @ Jun 12th 2008 6:57PM
Leinad, you should have done what i did: pre-order it from amazon.co.uk
It's cheaper and you get it faster. I have it since monday (before the paralization started) :D

I'm also from Spain and when I went last day to the supermarket ALL the milk and ALL the meat were gone. So, there IS food shortage.
At least they had toilet paper.
Fortunately, the strike should end soon.
