You have rookie eyes: a first-timer's MGS4 experience
I have a confession to make: this is my first serious attempt at playing a Metal Gear Solid title. Back at GDC 2007, my editor Chris Grant kept making references to the flash video Metal Gear Awesome. I was admittedly confused, and he thus dropped everything to show me the video. It took me a long time to appreciate all the humor.
Cut to present day. Like war, a lot has changed. I tried playing the MGS remake Twin Snakes on hard mode, only to succumb to frustration two hours later. For today's Metal Gear Solid 4 release, I brushed up on Metal Gear lore, exhausted Wikipedia, and commissioned one of our writers to give me a crash course in the series. I got my copy last night, installed the game, and I was ready to play.
This is Metal Gear Solid 4, through rookie eyes.

(Let me give obligatory spoiler warning here. While I'll try to abstain from big plot reveals – having only played 2 hours of the story, that shouldn't be too hard – if you don't want anything ruined for you, it might be best to avoid the rest of this article.)
Acknowledging that my sneaking skills are lacking and determined to enjoy the narrative, I started up the game in Liquid Easy mode. The first act loading was balanced by letting me sift through these random channels with some mind-screwing content, each followed by a PMC ad. I ended up on the David Hayter interview (highly recommended).
The game's cut scenes have so far all come from previously released trailers and footage, though it was great to see them again with context. For the first part of the game, small cut scenes are spliced with equally small play portions, easing you into the controls. Thanks in no small part to it being easy mode, I found sneaking to be painless and, quite frankly, a lot of fun.
The rest of my time was spent sneaking, watching cut scenes, and sneaking some more. Here are some other highlights:
Snake? Snaaaake? SNAAAAAAKE! Check out our Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots page for all things Metal Gear.

The rest of my time was spent sneaking, watching cut scenes, and sneaking some more. Here are some other highlights:
- During the flashbacks you're prompted occasionally to hit the X button if you wish to see some more context. Unfortunately, those who are clueless to the Metal Gear Solid series will be very confused by the 1 to 2 second clips.
- I ended up getting caught once or twice but was able to avoid killing anyone. Having watched PS3 Fanboy's Nick Doerr play through hard mode, I'm quite glad to be playing it on easy for the moment. I want to enjoy the story for now; after getting through that, I'll gladly replay on a harder difficulty.
- I haven't found a way around it, but Snake runs slow. It didn't come up a lot, though, since I spent most of the time crouched or in prone position.
- "Excuse me waiter, there's an Apple in my snake." Snake hits the battlefield with an iPod, which you interact with via the right thumbstick. We chose Sea Breeze from MGS3 and found it quite amusing juxtaposed with gunshots, shrill screams and explosions. Also, we discovered Meryl uses a Macbook Pro. What, are there no Sony Vaio's in the future?
- I can't say enough about the graphics and audio. Top notch!
- Being a survivor of the Xenosaga series, I didn't find the cut scene length to be a problem. So far, at least.
- Speaking of humor, there's quite a bit to be found. Search every crevice. Listen to soldier's talk. You'll be well rewarded. If you come a cross a certain magazine, be sure to look it up in the inventory and inspect the cover.

I can't wait to pick this up on the way home from work.
Neebs @ Jun 12th 2008 3:33PM
Would you say it's a good game, even for a newcomer to the series?
Ross Miller @ Jun 12th 2008 3:44PM
I enjoyed it, at least, and I'm a newcomer.
Haggard @ Jun 12th 2008 5:06PM
I'm a newcomer.. I've played about 45 mins of MGS1 on the playstation 1, and watched all the GT retrospectives, but nothing more (although I've beaten all the splinter cells on hard).
I found it to be a very accessible game and the story, even at the start is not too convoluted. Highly reccomended so far.
Ubiqutous Oxymoron @ Jun 12th 2008 3:38PM
I have this game but no chance of playing it in the foreseeable future, i would resign or fuck the dog (technical term for a sickie) if i didn't have my own company.
oh the irony, having state of the art technologies but no time to use them for pleasure...up to my arse in CAD and level design.
baby sea tuna @ Jun 12th 2008 3:54PM
I'm right there with you, boss. Except my obligations are all girlfriend-related.
Oh, and I have to finish GTA IV before I can start something new.
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 12th 2008 4:05PM
BabySeaTuna
Yes, finish GTA, whats taking so long? :D Oh and the question is, will you get the Liberty City Minute (beat it in less than 30hours) achievement? That game is amazing. I still have side missions to finish up, but NinjaGaiden2...
TOO.MANY.FUCKING.GAMES.
:(

Shut up bitch!
ThePerfectCompanion @ Jun 12th 2008 3:49PM
I'm curious are you finding the game fun? I mean in a more than "this is my first time and its new therefore interesting" type of way?
So far it seems like all you've been doing is watching cutscenes and doing a lil gameplay...not exactly a whole lot.
Plus it sounds like the rumors of it having a ridiculous amount of cutscenes are sorta true.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jun 12th 2008 3:54PM
Do you honestly care or are you just trolling again like usual?
Neebs @ Jun 12th 2008 3:55PM
Metal Gear games have long cutscenes?!
ThePerfectCompanion @ Jun 12th 2008 4:16PM
What business is it of yours?
The questions not directed at your biased arrogant ass.
Watching the cutscenes on Youtube though make the game look interesting from a visual standpoint. I think the 360 controller would make this game very enjoyable if it were multiplat.
I just can't stand the site of the ps3 controller.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jun 12th 2008 4:20PM
"The questions not directed at your biased arrogant ass."
And what exactly am I biased towards? I own all 3 systems and play them equally. I don't understand how you can seriously call me biased, look at yourself.

CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jun 12th 2008 4:28PM
It looks like he has. If you really want to trick us you should leave a comment from all 3 of your accounts on a single story!
Mal F4cti0n @ Jun 12th 2008 8:47PM
Ross did say what he has played is a lot of fun so far.
I don't like the PS2/3 controller either.
I have played some of the other games. I never understood the stories in them as it were, so I would imagine if the game is enjoyable, it is enjoyable.
Maybe Ben Heck can rig up a 360 controller to play on the PS3. That would be hawt.
McWeen @ Jun 12th 2008 3:57PM
I am in the exact same boat. I tried it back on psx and couldn't get into it. I played about 2 hours of Twin Snakes before it became the only game I have ever sold. Picked up the MGS PS3 bundle this morning and going to give it another try.
GamingGurl @ Jun 12th 2008 3:58PM
DUDE, this hilarious guy is playing Metal Gear Solid 4 for 24 straight hours! It's awesome! plus he's giving good tips! tits! check it out! http://bushleague.tv/
Ranus Studios @ Jun 12th 2008 4:02PM
I only played through MGS1 a few times, and haven't followed the series since. I'm leaning away from getting it, myself.
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 12th 2008 4:18PM
You actually might be better off for it. MGS was the only one with a normal storyline anyone could understand. Part 2 and 3 (mainly 2) have so many twists and turns you need a barf bucket beside you as you play along.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jun 12th 2008 4:46PM
I don't think the stories in 2 and 3 were to bad, a little crazy, but if you play the game over a weeks time then you usually can understand what's going on. I made the mistake of playing half of MGS2 and then stopped playing it for a while, I just gave up on understanding what was going on and restarted. MGS3 was like a bond film, it even had a cool theme song.
whistlepig @ Jun 12th 2008 5:44PM
after the second one i stopped playing ,actually in the middle of 2 and havent felt the need to try 3 or 4 . hope its a good game tho for ps3 for everyone else
Noshino @ Jun 12th 2008 6:20PM
Fenix,
The story of MGS3 was pretty straight forward, with very few twists...
Actually, to get a few friends into MGS, I made them play MGS3 first, and it worked...
totoro @ Jun 12th 2008 4:02PM
Great article, Ross-hope you keep updating it as you progress thru the game.
Spitfire301 @ Jun 12th 2008 4:28PM
i wish this was me... not my first mgs but it would be my first and only ps3 title so far.
My FYE (which was kind enough to let me preorder the 80GB PS3 MGS bundle) doesnt have it yet... does anyone know of a delay in that bundle?
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jun 12th 2008 4:32PM
All the bundles in my area got bought up and put on craigslist.
Spitfire301 @ Jun 13th 2008 1:13PM
grrr... i paid 50 bucks to preorder that shit. Finally try to get a ps3 and this is what i get
offday @ Jun 12th 2008 4:29PM
Never played any MGS games either. I love Splinter Cell, though. And I admit that this may be the first thing to make me jealous of PS3 owners. No offense guys.
Nate @ Jun 12th 2008 4:42PM
No offense taken. That joystiq article about all the JRPGs for the 360 is one of the first things to make me jealous of the 360 :D
Honestly, if you have one, there's not a lot to be jealous of in the other. Some minor things, but in the grand scheme of *playing videogames* ... meh. I mean, come on, when placement of the left analog and slope of the triggers on the PS3 controller is the most common complaint, you know things have to be pretty even. What do PS3 guys complain about? Noise on the 360 and a failure rate that has been mostly fixed in the latest hardware? Wow, yeah, tough times on both sides of the aisle. Must be rough.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jun 12th 2008 4:50PM
Please don't talk about failure rates, mine just went in today:( Luckily I've got MGS4 to play!
Korova *Pyro aspect* @ Jun 12th 2008 4:38PM
The Joystiq folding@home team just passed Sony Computer Entertainment Europe team in ranking.
We will soon be in the top 300 teams worldwide. So, PS3 'stiqs, when you are not snaking around, let that PS3 fold away.
Give a little back to the scientific community and show off the power of those PS3s.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jun 12th 2008 4:43PM
How do I join the team?
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jun 12th 2008 5:16PM
If you fold 24/7/365 on a PS3 it will cost you over $150 in electric bills.
Just give $150 to charity and turn your PS3 off when you aren't using it.
Noshino @ Jun 12th 2008 6:28PM
why not the LS2LS7?,
I also thought of that, but then I realized that in the long run, it would be much better to help science help others...
But yah, I did end up giving money to charities, Toys for Tots
Korova *Pyro aspect* @ Jun 13th 2008 8:13AM
LS2 fails to mentions that being a per year number. And I agree with Noshino.
Google folding@home or go to http://folding.stanford.edu/
You can download a folding client for pretty much any computer or the PS3. Then follow instructions or consult the Wiki.
They also have explanations of what they do with the results and the science that has been done on its basis.
But I get most satisfaction from us going up the team rankings. My hope is that we catch up to Penny Arcade.
killroy420 @ Jun 12th 2008 4:55PM
so, good game? or greatest game?
JMARR @ Jun 12th 2008 4:58PM
i was 'voting with my wallet' by holding out on getting a PS3.
but the MGS4 bundle was just too sweet ($70 of free stuff!) to pass up. it's on a FedEX truck somewhere heading my way now. I'm glad my first ps3 experience will be shared with my buddy Snake... i might even take up smoking cigarettes!
Spitfire301 @ Jun 13th 2008 1:35PM
Know when its supposed to arrive? I got the same thing lol and i cant wait to get it
JMARR @ Jun 13th 2008 3:13PM
unfortunately, no, I don't know when it will arrive.
I pre-ordered it from CircuitCity and they send me a FedEX tracking number.
The CircuitCity website tells me it will be delivered on 6/17.
but the FedEX website tells me it will be delivered on 6/14.
man, I hope it comes on 6/14 :)
good luck Spitfire!
JediMogg @ Jun 12th 2008 5:06PM
this is my first MGS game. I played maybe the first quarter of MGS3 and that's it. i've played a few hours so far and am enjoying it. I read up on the back story and watched the gametrailers retrospective to catch up.
so far my biggest complaint is the controls. Like mgs3, I sometimes feel like i'm struggling with the controller. I wish the controls were more fluid. So far this one seems to be more flexible in terms of sneaking vs. run and gun. After about 4 hours, I would say about a third so far has been cut scenes. and I agree the graphics, sound, and production values are top notch
Ethan @ Jun 12th 2008 5:26PM
I think yes on everything apart from the 'enjoy the story part.' I like games with a narrative but I haven't liked the narrative itself in previous installments.
Robert @ Jun 12th 2008 5:51PM
Anyone knows what happened to Fernando?, many PS3 news without him appearing bashing it, is he sick? is he playing MGS4 with no time to post a comment? lol
geebee @ Jun 12th 2008 7:37PM
vaios not vaio's!
Mal F4cti0n @ Jun 12th 2008 8:48PM
I am a multiplayer fanboy so I want to know....how is that part of the game?
t_m @ Jun 15th 2008 8:30AM
Is there a way to enjoy the story without having to play the game?
Twin snakes was my only other encounter with MGS and I was kinda disappointed. The story was intriguing, if off the wall, but the gameplay was pretty average. I just wanted to get it over and see how it ended. thank god it was pretty easy.
