Nintendo Europe's senior marketing director, Laurent Fischer, has apparently apologized for comments made earlier in the week, in which he said that the only people interested in a Wii hard drive would be "geeks and otaku." Fisher tells videogaming247 that he didn't mean to use those terms in a way to cause offense. He regrets any "misunderstanding" that was created by his comments within the community.
What say ye Nintendo legions, forgive Fisher or should his penance be more profound?

If people get offended by being called a geek, then you should apologize and call them an asshole.

He should have stuck by his words.
Though poorly worded, I agreed with the guy, or at least the general idea, but I've lost a little respect for him; you mean what you say.
He should have said those statements were his own thoughts and not those of the Nintendo corporation, or just ignored the internet kerfuffle. One of the two actions would have drawn a line under the matter, probably.
Apologising like this makes him look like a weak man.

But the person is entitled to his opinion, regardless. It's a shame that people in the public eye are not allowed to air their true feelings without being torn down by a select few who may take offence.
And as for insulting the Nintendo customer: I'm not surprised. From giant multinationals to the little Mom & Pop stores, I believe - big assumption coming up - you'd be hard pressed to find management who have disdain for their audience.
I'd prefer honesty than half hearted retractions, no matter how much they may hurt sections of their audience.

The only way he could REALLY apologize, is releasing a HDD.

Sure, just release an external hard drive and all will be forgiven!

You don't hear Reggie saying shit like that now do you? Yeah, this guy probably shouldn't be on the european board, he's not in touch with gamers apparently. Even Reggie isn't really in touch with gamers, but he is a damn good salesman and a damn good speaker, so we can excuse him for that.

*cough*Brawl*cough*
Nintendo's treated Europe with scorn for ages now. Bear in mind that while every bugger else has been playing Brawl for months, we still have to wait another two WEEKS before we can get hold of it officially.
You may return that we got Mario Kart Wii first – go google the phrase 'a sop to Cerberus'.

If by geeks and otaku he meant anyone with an IQ over 80 who owns a Wii, then sure, he was correct.

So he's apologizing that people supposedly misunderstood him? I don't see how his comments were misunderstood -- they seemed perfectly explicit and in-context to me. What an ass.

The only apology I will accept is a Wii Hard Drive.
Please mail it to my house, you have my shipping address.

He should still move forward with suggesting an external hard drive for the Wii. Games like Rock Band have been gimped because of the storage issues.

I don't so much mind the insult as much as I mind what it implied.
Nintendo doesn't seem to care about the Wii's extreme lack of space
I've had my Wii for 6 months, I own 2 WiiWare titles and 6 virtual console games... and I have no room for anything else.

This apology doesn't mean a whole lot

I don't think there is any way to misconstrue those statements. He thinks only a small minority of losers care about more storage. It is what it is. He is sorry that it offended, but that doesn't change the way he feels.

I was just annoyed at the fact that he kinda didn't realize the severity of the situation as a *marketing director*--I need and demand external space goddamnit.
See if any more VC games sell after a certain point when people get sick of the uninstall/install procedures.

...Or even Wii games for that matter. I can only imagine the inevitable handful, "oh man, I can't play new games because I can't clear the space to save them/I dunno what SD card to get/my important saves can't be copied!" There WILL be those kinds of people, I assure you.

I'm still annoyed. However, get more memory in that f__king Wii -- then I'm cool about it.

It's not the fact that he used the terms "geeks and otaku", it's the fact that he used them in a negative way. Showing that Nintendo doesn't care about its most loyal customers isn't a good way to keep them loyal. That said, Nintendo as of late seems to have been trying to say "We don't need you anymore, we have your grandmother. Go piss off and play the Xbox."

NO company cares about you, you should be old enough to realise this. You're nothing but a unit to these multinationals.

Misunderstanding? What? Those words were pretty direct.

Funny how they scorn the very group that made them what they are, now that they have a much more mainstream audience enticed and on their leash. Congrats, Nintendo... you've finally openly proved that you're all business instead of kittens, unicorns and rainbows like most gamers have thought you to be for years.

Its interesting that nintendo really HASN'T lost any of it's old arrogance, or learned from any of the mistakes they made with the n64 and gamecube. Instead they've just moved to a new market and made them mostly irrelevant.
(and this comes from a longterm nintendo fan.)
Their stubborness cost them dear with the snes, n64 and gamecube, but it doesn't seem to matter with the Wii.
Though you can't help but wonder what could be, if they actually embraced some mainstream wisdom and catered to ideas like online markets, downloadable content (in terms of movies, music, anime, games - to the Wii AND DS), etc..

PS/ Whats the maximum SD card size the Wii takes? 2GB? Does it take SDHD? Cos I've seen up to 16gb SD cards around recently, and the prices for 2gb cards are dirt cheap right now... and 4 gb will be dirt cheap soon.
Not enough for movies, music, etc... but enough for a few games I guess..
