Any time one video game company attempts to capitalize on another company's good idea, there's always a bit of backlash from the fans of the company copied. We can only imagine the kind of retribution Microsoft will soon face from fans of the Wii's Miis and the PS3's Home -- if our sources are accurate, their upcoming "Avatar" service bears a striking resemblance to Sony and Nintendo's pre-existing lookalike creators.
"Avatars", mentioned in an independent survey for Microsoft (as taken by an X3F tipster), will supposedly be used in place of gamer pictures, and will give Xbox Live subscribers an animated, customizable online persona. The meager amount of information provided for the service claims it will be available "this holiday for all Xbox Live connected members", and "this Spring for all new console owners."
This information lines up nicely with details recently relayed to Joystiq by a trusted source, who tells us that a robust "avatar" (source's term) creation service which blends the customization options of Home with the in-game functionality of Miis would comprise a substantial chunk of the 360's fall update. With the breath of E3 hot upon our nape, we're sure to hear something more concrete about this service in the coming month.

Wow, what a short memory everyone on the internet has. Am I the only one that remembers that nearly every innovation in ANYTHING in the past 100 years has been copied off of something else? This is especially true in video games. If you want to take this a step further...
Any video game console that uses a gamepad and plugs into the tv is a copy of The Brown Box invited by Ralph Baer.
Any console that uses disks is copying Sega CD
Any console with online is copying Dreamcast
Any console with a joystick is copying Nintendo
All FPS's are copying Rise of the Triad. ( I believe?)
All RPG's are copying D&D...
This can go on forever. This is how things advance. Someone gets an idea, based off an old idea, and someone else gets a newer idea based off of that idea.
And remember, motion controller= still pure rumor. Microtransactions for avatars= not confirmed, avatars themselves= still a rumor.

Oh, come on. Yes, this has clearly been done because both Nintendo and Sony are offering a more 3D and personalised form of customisation, and simply using MSN messenger isn't going to cut it against something like HOME.
But it's not like this has blatently been copied from Nintendo, it's been around online for years. Microsoft have been using something very similar for years for things like MSN.
And it's not like Nintendo haven't taken anything from Microsoft, look at all the things the 360 came out with, that clearly "inspired" very similar features for the PS3 and Wii. The marketplace and Xbox Live Arcade being the most blatent.

Xbox live is free, Xbox gold is 50 bucks a year. The only reason you pay for gold is to play against people online. So you're paying microsoft 50 dollars to play an online match against your friends. I would rather pay Bill Gates 50 bucks to beat the shit out of him for a year.

This discussion is retarded for three reasons.
1 - Bringing out the ol' "OMFG MY SONY PS3 IZ WAY BETTAR THEN UR XBOX HUEG 360" is just sad.
2 - It's not like Microsoft is going to charge extra to let us use Avatars, although I do imagine there will be costumes and accessories you need to buy. Such is the digital distribution age however.
3 - Fifty bucks a year really isn't a big deal for us adults. For the young bucks it is. This is genius because not only do we Gold users get loads of free content, demos before Silver users, etc., but that 50 dollar gap is damn near impossible to bridge for the twelve-year-olds I always hear on COD4 for PS3 or any game ever on the PC. Also, that fifty dollars encourages those twelve-year-olds to behave, because not only is their gamertag on the line for their behaviour but so is their fitty bones.
I for one do not regret or resent for a second paying fifty dollars a year for douchebag insurance on Live, and I am happy that Microsoft is trying something new with the Dashboard. It's been getting old.
