Snaaake? We ask Sony about 'limited-edition' MGS4 80GB PS3 supply

Sony tells us that it's pleased with the strong interest in the bundle (system seller confirmed!) and is "working to ensure that additional shipments are provided to retailers." The company wouldn't provide specific inventory levels or give a restocking date, so if you're really aching for the bundle, you'd best keep hitting redial and pestering your local retailer.
SCEA statement:
"While we can't provide specifics on inventory levels, the Metal Gear Solid 4 PlayStation 3 bundle is a limited-edition offering that's experiencing high demand from Metal Gear and PlayStation enthusiasts. We're pleased with the strong consumer interest in the bundle and are working to ensure that additional shipments are provided to retailers."

Although this bundle has sold out quickly this will be very short lived. MGS4 doesn't appeal to as big a fan base as a Halo 3 or Gears so this won't continue.
PojoMofo @ Jun 16th 2008 5:55PM
I hope they continue to offer some kind of an 80GB bundle. It would actually be smart if they bundle it with some of the bigger games, like an 80GB LBP bundle for the holiday
A.Jeffery @ Jun 16th 2008 5:56PM
I suspect its more the fact its an 80GB with b/c more so than MGS4 which is why its so popular, still an 80GB Ps3, MGS4, PAIN, and a DS3 for $499 is one heck of a deal
pavs @ Jun 16th 2008 11:16PM
yeah, because those Halo 3 bundles just keep selling out right?
I mean, theres only like ten of them available at every freaking best buy and wallmart.
Jesus christ people, how hard is it just to admit that a game there is a good game on a system. MGS4 will be selling the same way halo and gears are selling, because its a must have on the system. Eveyone who buys a PS3 from now on, will have to get MGS4, so the sales will be constantly adding up to an already impressive amount.
Sure halo has more "fans" (thought I'm not sure if you can call a brain-dead ten year old a fan) but saying that Gears has a bigger base than MGS, thats just heresy. You should be injected with FOXDIE for saying that shit. Gears ripped off Killswitch, and you know it. Its a new franchise which won't be around for too long, it will probably last as long as splinter cell, because there is only so many times people can play the same game over and over without getting sick of it. Admit it, the new gameplay trailer looked fun, but it barely brings anything new to the table (i think the biggest addition is that you can now slice with a chainsaw from bottom to top)
Dirt @ Jun 17th 2008 10:09AM
People really don't care about the MGS4 that comes with the bundle. It's simply "icing on the cake", really.
What they care about:
BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY system back on the shelves!
Dualshock 3 Standard pack-in!
Free game with system, woohoo!
At least, this is why I got the system. FINALLY. They need to get rid of the junk 40GB system, or at least at B/C and a Dualshock 3 at the very least.
CubeGuy @ Jun 17th 2008 4:00PM
If I know my MGS like I think I do...
Injecting him with FOXDIE wouldn't do much at all. =P
DonWii @ Jun 16th 2008 5:56PM
I heard the initial shipment number was 70k world wide for the bundles.
Eggy @ Jun 16th 2008 6:13PM
80GB is only being released in the US as far as I know.
sinai @ Jun 16th 2008 6:15PM
wow, you're like me, but not as cool.
Zertoss @ Jun 16th 2008 5:57PM
I bought the bundle (Circuit City shipped it a day early so I got it on the 12th), so now I own every current-gen console and handheld.
Couldn't be happier.
naxe @ Jun 16th 2008 6:07PM
congrats man. hope you enjoy your ps3 as much as i have. I just finished MGS4 two days ago. and i must say that was the best game i have ever played. masterpiece.
anyway have fun.

Warning: You are now not permitted on Joystiq because you are not able to be a flamer/fanboy.
I kid, I kid.
I wish more people cared less about which console is better.

Colin and Soulblade are henceforth the dumbest people on the site.
Sarcasm folks, sarcasm.
colin @ Jun 16th 2008 9:20PM
No, I'm pretty positive that you are wrong, DemonGSides.
colin @ Jun 16th 2008 9:21PM
... in effect making you the dumbest person on this site.
xGeneral DEATHx @ Jun 17th 2008 11:17AM
Circuit City shipped mine too, but on the second day FedEx tried to deliver (1st day I was at work), they delivered to the wrong house and TOOK THE WRONG PERSON'S SIGNATURE...sigh...so anyway, I cancelled the CC order and ran to the local Best Buy where they had four of them and picked it up for the same price. And yes, so far MGS4 is one hell of a game.
All I need now is a PSP and a Wii (shrug), and the collection will be complete.
Night Elve @ Jun 16th 2008 6:04PM
What a great game! I'm having a great time playing MGS4.
ThePerfectCompanion @ Jun 16th 2008 6:06PM
Agree with A Jeffery.
I can only hope that when Final Fantasy comes out (assuming its still a psTRIPLE exclusive) that they bundle it with an 80G ps3.
Sorry sony but no BC means no sale to me.
It'll be interesting to see if the 80G is still in production at that time. It wouldn't surprise me to see another version of the ps3 come out before then.
Is the 80G MGS4 bundle version the "gun metal gray" version?
Noshino @ Jun 16th 2008 6:12PM
Nah, isn't that one exclusive from the Konami website?
Arttemis @ Jun 16th 2008 6:54PM
Well, if you look at the picture, you'd see that the regular $500 PS3 bundle (which can be found everywhere from Best Buy to Wal-Mart) is an 80GB PS3 that comes with MGS4, a Pain voucher, and software emulation for PS2 BC.
The Gun Metal Gray bundle was exclusive to Konami.com, and it was only 40GB (no BC) and cost $600.
But I agree, if Sony wasn't selling a system with BC, I probably wouldn't have gotten a PS3 last week.
I was surprised to see some of my PS2 games running at a sometimes higher frame rate but most seem to fluctuate up and down. MGS1 and 2, all three DMC games, Red Dead Revolver, and GTA:SA play just fine.
MGS3, though, is criminally bogged down with a slow frame rate. It's literally 50% speed at some points and seemingly 80% speed on average. I really hope Sony releases another update in light of MGS4's success. =/
Microswirl (MKWii:1676- 4270-3674) @ Jun 16th 2008 7:45PM
Wait until the Team ICO game (if you're into that sort of thing). That's my plan, and hopefully PS3 will be down to $200 by that time.
Vidikron (FU) @ Jun 16th 2008 8:00PM
Quit pretending you're ever going to buy one.
Microswirl (MKWii:1676- 4270-3674) @ Jun 16th 2008 9:11PM
Yes, Vidikron (FU), because in your mind you're either with us or against us. The only two options are buy for $400 or don't buy, no room for compromise, no such thing as waiting for a better deal, no such thing as a "system-seller" on a person-by-person basis. It's gotta be all or nothing, huh?
I waited until 2005 before I bought a PS2. That's 5 years after it came out. I got it for $130 and from day one I had THE BEST game (imho) the system has to offer: Shadow of the Collossus. I've been a long-time Zelda so I couldn't resist SotC. Everybody has different reasons and criteria and expectations for the decisions they make. Try to wrap your head around that.
Microswirl (MKWii:1676- 4270-3674) @ Jun 16th 2008 9:52PM
@Vidikron (FU)
After wading through the troll-invested waters of ThePerfectCompanion's comment history it occurrs to me that yes, you are quite right, he probably *IS* only pretending to maybe possibly one day buy a PS3. Normally I'd be willing to give the benefit of the doubt to anyone who presents a well-articulated arguement, but pearls of wisdom like "360 for the mothafreaking win!" and "The ps3 is still a horrible overpriced piece of sh*t machine" raise a red flag.
My apologies, Vidikron (FU).
DarkMan08 @ Jun 16th 2008 11:17PM
"Sorry sony but no BC means no sale to me"
I use to think the same thing before I got my 60gb PS3. And since then I rarely play PS2 games on it. Now I'm thinking about selling my 60gb and getting a 40gb Ps3, Cheaper, runs cooler, and use less energy.
Vidikron (FU) @ Jun 17th 2008 3:16AM
@Microswirl
No problem. ThePerfectCompanion has gone several names here (PerfectAssassin, Wii60Warrior, etc..), but it's the same tune no matter what name he's using. He pretty much posts nothing but anti-PS3/Sony crap every day. If you had said you intend to buy a PS3 one day I'd believe you... him, not so much.
ThePerfectCompanion @ Jun 17th 2008 8:40AM
Lol I was and am serious regarding my statements above. Assuming that FFXIII turns out to be a really good game and that its still a ps3 exclusive by the time it comes out I would strongly consider getting a ps3.
The only thing that would hold me back is the controller itself, the lack of BC (assuming the 80G isn't around and isn't bundled with the game).
And last but not least sony fanboy assholes like yourself vidikron.
343 Guilty Fart @ Jun 16th 2008 6:06PM
I've never considered buying a PS3 till a week ago, and now I'm frantically looking for one with backcompat that's reasonably priced. I would love to get a MGS bundle. Sony, please send more!
FOXHOUND @ Jun 17th 2008 7:14AM
"activate it" :d
I'm in the same boat; planning to buy one for my brother to take with him to grad school(as if he'll have time to play it, LoL). While I'm hoping they get 80GB MGS4 bundles restocked because he's a fan as well... I'm fine with just finding the 60 or 80GB ones too.
sad robot @ Jun 16th 2008 6:12PM
this was the sweetspot i was waiting for so pre-ordered it at Play N Trade (f.y.i dont buy systems there. they make you buy 2 used games and a used controller adding up to about $30-40) took me 50 minutes to leave with my controller but other than that i love my new ps3 so now i have all current gen consoles. Can i get a what what??
colin @ Jun 16th 2008 6:19PM
Sorry, you can't have a "what what". How about some lovely commas, conjunctions, and periods instead?
xGeneral DEATHx @ Jun 18th 2008 8:19AM

mostly, Im in the second act, and there are long cutscenes but nothing crazy.
Noshino @ Jun 16th 2008 6:30PM
Nope, playing most of the time...
Now attempting to get this mask that requires me to finish under 5 hours, no kills, no alerts, and not use special items...
trekker @ Jun 16th 2008 6:22PM
I bought one of these purely by chance, I got it along with the $100 walmart gift card. It ended up being a sweet deal. 80gb drive, bc, dualshock and metal gear. I like the metal gear series but didnt care if I played it or not. And I managed to get it at the price of the 40gb system.
Bahamett @ Jun 16th 2008 6:32PM
Yeah I got mine at wallmart as well, including that nice $100 Giftcard... I was tempted to buy the Gunmetal Gray from Konami's website, but it was $600 w/ 40gb and NOT BC. I waited 3 hours in line for the bundle and it was well worth it. Extra thanks to Joystiq for informing us about that sweet deal.
Jonathan-DBOSS @ Jun 16th 2008 6:34PM
I stood in line for 4 hours and got the last bundle from the local EB Games Store (yes the 8th and LAST bundle). I ran out of the store and quickly took a ride to my house.
Today, MGS4 is cleared and I'm loving this system.
Amen.
Lysolchip @ Jun 16th 2008 6:57PM
Best buy or Circuit city for me
Draco Basileus @ Jun 16th 2008 6:59PM
Sony needs to rethink this BC issue and either start making more 80's available, or re-release the 60's. I'd glad I picked up my 60GB PS3 last summer. It was sweet to play MGS 1-3, upscaled, without any possibility of software hiccups.
MGS4 arrives today at mi casa!
Arttemis @ Jun 16th 2008 8:36PM
I *really* wish my new 80GB PS3 could do that.
MGS3 plays almost unbearably. ;(
Seriously, Sony needs to fix that shit with some updates.
nick @ Jun 16th 2008 7:00PM
I came across one sitting out on a table at a local Best Buy in the Bay Area last Thursday @noon. Not sure if they only had one out, but there was one still there, when I visited the following day. Haven't been back since.
343 Guilty Fart @ Jun 16th 2008 9:15PM
Which best buy, where when? I need answers!
beoba @ Jun 16th 2008 7:01PM
I got the bundle at walmart early thursday morning (on the way to work). When I asked about the bundle, they rolled about 8 of them out of the back room (could have had more back there).
If this shortage is really happening, I'm glad I went when I did. A great deal for effectively $400 :)
apotheos @ Jun 16th 2008 7:54PM
@Eggy I had no problems getting one on launch day in Canada.
Bluebrake @ Jun 16th 2008 8:28PM
Checked every store in the city on Saturday, there wasn't one. I guess I'm stuck for at least another week.
Honestly, only 70k bundles? It's been obvious for a while that consumers were viewing this as a second launching of the PS3, or even the "real" launch. How did they not see this coming?
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Jun 16th 2008 8:32PM
RIP full backwards compatibility. : (
I wonder if the eventual slim PS3 will be like the 40gb or 80gb....
