PS3 2.40 update includes in-game XMB, trophies
Sony has just confirmed that PlayStation 3 firmware update v2.40 will finally add in-game XMB and trophy support -- but we'll have to wait for update v2.36 first. (Yay for improved "system stability" while playing retro PlayStation games!) Although there's almost no other information to report at this time -- just a hint of "other new enhancements" -- at least we know the rumor is true. Definitely expect more details soon, hopefully before E3 next month.

Finally!
Invisible Ghekko @ Jul 4th 2008 5:25AM
with the new update is it possible to start a private whilst in game? because if it does it is pretty much the same as xbox live which will be a massive improvement!!!
Ninegauger @ Jun 17th 2008 6:15PM
Only 2 and a half years late...
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Jun 17th 2008 6:23PM
yea considering the PS3 launched in January 06.
...oh wait.
ScottG13 @ Jun 17th 2008 6:34PM
It is pretty ridiculous how alpha Sony's online systems launched. The road map already existed. Sony would look REALLY bad in the online space if it weren't for the comical efforts on Nintendo's console.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Jun 17th 2008 7:58PM
yea you are right Scott. there are admittedly many features that have been added since launch that should have probably been there at launch, including in-game XMB. i just hate it when people like Ninegauger here try to make stuff look even worse than it seems. hell it already looked bad enough without him making up stuff.
Justin @ Jun 17th 2008 6:16PM
If Sony plans on releasing 2.36, then 2.37, 2.38 and 2.39 first...I'm gonna throw my PS3 out of the window.
But not before properly placing a dumpster full of pillows beneath my window.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Jun 17th 2008 6:27PM
well they dont always complete the full number cycle on firmware upgrades so i think we're safe to bank on just 1 more release before we are in-game XMB-ing it up.
but then again it is Sony, anything could happen...
Justin @ Jun 17th 2008 6:33PM
LOL true.
We can still hope though.
*looks up into the stars*

i got the 2.40 update on wednsday.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Jun 17th 2008 6:18PM
at last. but why 2.36 first? i thought they said it would be out mid-June anyway. Sony late again as usual. better late than never then i suppose.
Justin @ Jun 17th 2008 6:19PM
The mid-June thing was speculation.
I believe the only thing Sony has said regarding 2.40 is "Summer 2008"
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Jun 17th 2008 6:24PM
well that explains that then. i thought i had seen that confirmed somewhere, guess i made it up in my head lol.
Justin @ Jun 17th 2008 6:29PM
Actually, I think it was a rumor started by someone on NeoGAF saying 'coming soon'...and a lot of members turned that into 'launching w/ MGS4', then that got rumor got morphed into a week after MGS4 lmao.
Idk how it got so out of hand...but Sony hasn't confirmed anything besides today.
At least not to my knowledge. -_-
Jaimi @ Jun 17th 2008 6:55PM

But... Mid June is still Spring.

My 40GB has just found more use.
Now All I need is FFXIII confirmed for Holiday 2008 and then i'll die.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Jun 17th 2008 6:29PM
well dont say goodbye to your family just yet then bud, i think we got a ways to go before we get that gem.
PojoMofo @ Jun 17th 2008 6:35PM
I will go into shock if FFXIII is released in this decade, seriously
Brandon @ Jun 17th 2008 6:26PM
I think people underestimated what sony actually had to do to make In game XMB work. Keep in mind they had to essentially reconfigure how the OS was loaded. During a game, the os was not given enough resources to make having the XMB come up during gameplay possible. So this took quite a bit of software engineering on their part to make that happen without screwing with games.
PojoMofo @ Jun 17th 2008 6:31PM
360 fanboys dont care about the logistics, when 2.4 does come out, they are going to have to find something else to hold over PS3 owners heads.
Korova *Pyro aspect* @ Jun 17th 2008 6:37PM
already found it: tie-ratio. You cant beat that, you cant even reach up to touch it on your tippy-toes.
PojoMofo @ Jun 17th 2008 6:44PM
problem is Korova, doesn anybody really give a shaq-fu how many games are owned per console??? does that really make any difference to anyone other than marketing directors and fanboys looking to troll??
JJ Rooster @ Jun 17th 2008 6:55PM
I think it matters to any developer hoping to sell games! Obviously, more games sell on the 360, and it's part of the reason exclusives are hard to come by.
Van Faulk @ Jun 17th 2008 6:58PM
So? They had an extra year to get it ready fpor launch. There is NO excuse for the $300 core pack in 05, to have capabilities that the $500 ps3 has in 08.
Hala Madrid!! (Madrileno hasta la muerte!) @ Jun 17th 2008 8:00PM
@PojoMofo
I dunno how 360fanboys are related to this? but hey, anything to star a flame right?
Can we just be happy that in-game XMB is finally coming for the PS3?.
JCD @ Jun 17th 2008 10:20PM
The issue, Brandon, isn't that anyone underestimated the logistics of in game XMB. It's that no one cared. Sony designed the PS3 from the ground up, and Sony promised in game xmb from the beginning. It's their fault for over promising and under delivering.
Mr Khan @ Jun 18th 2008 12:08PM
But i thought that was the point of dedicating one of the SPEs to the OS at all times?
Or do you mean dedicating more RAM to that SPE's function?
Arturo @ Jun 17th 2008 6:27PM
firmware 2.40 incoming: check
picked up $50 psn card at meijer: check
now if only that darn wipeout hd would release...
Martez @ Jun 17th 2008 7:29PM
*high five*
Wipeout HD will be awesome.
padraig @ Jun 17th 2008 6:29PM
2.36 will probably fix GTA IV freezing PLEASE GOD
Obie @ Jun 17th 2008 6:29PM
So tropies are a copy of Xbox achievements?
PojoMofo @ Jun 17th 2008 6:33PM
I guess we will have to wait and see EXACTLY how trophies are used, but initials signs point to yes
Fernando Rocker @ Jun 17th 2008 6:34PM
No, of course not. Is something totally new, called Entitlements or Accomplishments.
Obie @ Jun 17th 2008 6:37PM
Achievements are pretty cool, I wish Nintendo games had them too.
Brandon @ Jun 17th 2008 6:38PM
They are different, in part because is not just a meaningless number that can be redeemed for nothing whatsoever, But its an object that can be redeemed for nothing whatsoever.
Obie @ Jun 17th 2008 6:39PM
Oh an object? So instead of just glancing and comparing achievements. I have to look at a room filled with these trophies? Not very efficient IMO.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 17th 2008 6:47PM
I believe the idea is for now, trophies will essentially be achievements. However, when Home comes out you're supposed to have a trophy room that will show 3D versions of your trophies to whoever visits. If you have a lot I remember Phil Harrison walking to the back where a huge, star wars senate like room lit up with hundreds if not thousands of spaces for the others.
Also, some games will supposedly give you special items whether it's clothes or accessories for your avatar or game based furniture/wallpapers for your apartment. I remember seeing a Resistance 1 wallpaper in the demo, but it was kinda ugly.
I'm addicted enough with 360's meaningless achievements. I don't need more motivation to achievement whore it up on PS3 :(
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Jun 17th 2008 8:09PM
so yea, its basically the same as Achievements on the 360 but the Trophies will be visible in Home eventually. so instead of just a score/number, you get a whole room of trophies to show off. how is that for an e-penis?
i would expect multiplatform games to have the same task as 360 Achievements though from whenever they launch on out.
Sabi @ Jun 19th 2008 3:57PM
Trophies are also going to be part f home i believe later. So when people visit your Home they can see your trophies...
At least thats what i remember Sony saying a while back
TopDogg069 @ Jun 17th 2008 6:32PM
at least they finally confirmed all the rumors. now lets just hope it doesn't take 6 months for 2.40 to come out
Limezor @ Jun 17th 2008 6:47PM
Sony is stupid, slow and retarded. They obviously don't know what to do and I hope they will fix this. I like PS3 and the hardware is much better than the XBOX 360 but if you can't even chat in game then you have a problem.
PojoMofo @ Jun 17th 2008 6:50PM
can't chat in game???? where have been dude????
JJ Rooster @ Jun 17th 2008 6:52PM
I've actually been holding off on playing MGS4 while I finish a 360 game for achievements. How sick is that?
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jun 17th 2008 7:13PM
That's pretty sick, brah.
joshua @ Jun 17th 2008 7:33PM
I think its pretty lame, myself.
Dwag @ Jun 17th 2008 7:31PM
Well if In game chat isn't included well then that shit is trash then but we already know its included.
Trophies to me don't seem to hold up as well as my friend Gamerscore.
I hope trophies can be viewed by my friends without needing Home.
Does anyone think Trophies will hold up as well as Gamerscore?
Bloo @ Jun 17th 2008 7:32PM
"can't chat in game???? where have been dude????"
What he means is for example: Last weekend I was playing MGS4 (of course). My buddy saw that I playing MGS4 when he signed into PSN. He then had to call me on the cell to discuss it. On a 360 all he would have had to do is send me a chat request and we could have been talking even though I was playing GTA IV and he was playing Gears of War. You should get a 360 so you can know what you're missing. It's a lot.
