PS3 2.40 update includes in-game XMB, trophies
72
Sony has just confirmed that PlayStation 3 firmware update v2.40 will finally add in-game XMB and trophy support -- but we'll have to wait for update v2.36 first. (Yay for improved "system stability" while playing retro PlayStation games!) Although there's almost no other information to report at this time -- just a hint of "other new enhancements" -- at least we know the rumor is true. Definitely expect more details soon, hopefully before E3 next month.

with the new update is it possible to start a private whilst in game? because if it does it is pretty much the same as xbox live which will be a massive improvement!!!

yea you are right Scott. there are admittedly many features that have been added since launch that should have probably been there at launch, including in-game XMB. i just hate it when people like Ninegauger here try to make stuff look even worse than it seems. hell it already looked bad enough without him making up stuff.

If Sony plans on releasing 2.36, then 2.37, 2.38 and 2.39 first...I'm gonna throw my PS3 out of the window.
But not before properly placing a dumpster full of pillows beneath my window.

well they dont always complete the full number cycle on firmware upgrades so i think we're safe to bank on just 1 more release before we are in-game XMB-ing it up.
but then again it is Sony, anything could happen...

at last. but why 2.36 first? i thought they said it would be out mid-June anyway. Sony late again as usual. better late than never then i suppose.

The mid-June thing was speculation.
I believe the only thing Sony has said regarding 2.40 is "Summer 2008"

Actually, I think it was a rumor started by someone on NeoGAF saying 'coming soon'...and a lot of members turned that into 'launching w/ MGS4', then that got rumor got morphed into a week after MGS4 lmao.
Idk how it got so out of hand...but Sony hasn't confirmed anything besides today.
At least not to my knowledge. -_-

I think people underestimated what sony actually had to do to make In game XMB work. Keep in mind they had to essentially reconfigure how the OS was loaded. During a game, the os was not given enough resources to make having the XMB come up during gameplay possible. So this took quite a bit of software engineering on their part to make that happen without screwing with games.

I think it matters to any developer hoping to sell games! Obviously, more games sell on the 360, and it's part of the reason exclusives are hard to come by.

So? They had an extra year to get it ready fpor launch. There is NO excuse for the $300 core pack in 05, to have capabilities that the $500 ps3 has in 08.

I dunno how 360fanboys are related to this? but hey, anything to star a flame right?
Can we just be happy that in-game XMB is finally coming for the PS3?.

The issue, Brandon, isn't that anyone underestimated the logistics of in game XMB. It's that no one cared. Sony designed the PS3 from the ground up, and Sony promised in game xmb from the beginning. It's their fault for over promising and under delivering.

They are different, in part because is not just a meaningless number that can be redeemed for nothing whatsoever, But its an object that can be redeemed for nothing whatsoever.

I believe the idea is for now, trophies will essentially be achievements. However, when Home comes out you're supposed to have a trophy room that will show 3D versions of your trophies to whoever visits. If you have a lot I remember Phil Harrison walking to the back where a huge, star wars senate like room lit up with hundreds if not thousands of spaces for the others.
Also, some games will supposedly give you special items whether it's clothes or accessories for your avatar or game based furniture/wallpapers for your apartment. I remember seeing a Resistance 1 wallpaper in the demo, but it was kinda ugly.
I'm addicted enough with 360's meaningless achievements. I don't need more motivation to achievement whore it up on PS3 :(

so yea, its basically the same as Achievements on the 360 but the Trophies will be visible in Home eventually. so instead of just a score/number, you get a whole room of trophies to show off. how is that for an e-penis?
i would expect multiplatform games to have the same task as 360 Achievements though from whenever they launch on out.

Sony is stupid, slow and retarded. They obviously don't know what to do and I hope they will fix this. I like PS3 and the hardware is much better than the XBOX 360 but if you can't even chat in game then you have a problem.

I've actually been holding off on playing MGS4 while I finish a 360 game for achievements. How sick is that?

Well if In game chat isn't included well then that shit is trash then but we already know its included.
Trophies to me don't seem to hold up as well as my friend Gamerscore.
I hope trophies can be viewed by my friends without needing Home.
Does anyone think Trophies will hold up as well as Gamerscore?

"can't chat in game???? where have been dude????"
What he means is for example: Last weekend I was playing MGS4 (of course). My buddy saw that I playing MGS4 when he signed into PSN. He then had to call me on the cell to discuss it. On a 360 all he would have had to do is send me a chat request and we could have been talking even though I was playing GTA IV and he was playing Gears of War. You should get a 360 so you can know what you're missing. It's a lot.
