Spore Creature Creator demo available now on PC and Mac
Like another layer in the Russian nesting doll of Spore hype creation, the Spore Creature Creator demo is out now for both Mac and PC. Big Download reports the demo contains 25% of the content available in the full $10 retail version releasing tomorrow.
We've got some impressions up on the Spore Creature Creator after fiddling around with it for a week. Spore proper will release Sept. 7 -- make sure to check your system specs.

I hate the idea of getting the trial with only 25% when the full trial comes out tommorow for $10. I know, I shouldn't be so excited about a trial of a demo. Well, whatever, I'm happy. Soon Spore will be populated by a million of my minions, or something.
Marty @ Jun 17th 2008 12:10PM
I just hope Spore lives up to the hype - you have no idea how many people I know who swear this is going to be the best game ever created.
Sircolby45 @ Jun 17th 2008 12:13PM
You will find fast that every game that comes out in the gaming community is the best game ever created lol.
Marty @ Jun 17th 2008 12:39PM
Haha, well I agree with that, but it seems that with Spore, everyone I know keeps telling me "... but just wait 'til Spore is out!"
Jakka @ Jun 17th 2008 1:08PM
If the Creature Creator didn't impress you then I'm afraid then no other game released this year will.
sicsided @ Jun 17th 2008 12:16PM
I've created around 25 creatures so far, and have downloaded around 25 from others. If the game isn't fun, at least the creator is.
JohnHeist @ Jun 17th 2008 12:20PM
76% done...and we all have to remember that the creature creator is just a tiny part of the game. Starting out as a single cell is gonna be awesome
kataztrophy @ Jun 17th 2008 12:30PM
I was going to download the demo then wait for the full game, but I'll just by the creature creator later this week.
Einhanderkiller @ Jun 17th 2008 12:49PM
Admit it:
Whose first creature had a giant penis?
mr mobius @ Jun 17th 2008 12:51PM
No but 3rd one had a tail facing forwards that I only realised after looked really suspicious. Weird thing was it had to have a big spike facing straight up.
Zertoss @ Jun 17th 2008 12:55PM
My first creature WAS a giant penis.
LaughingTarget @ Jun 17th 2008 1:24PM
Not mine, I'd rather not have my world populated by huge dicks.
Zertoss @ Jun 17th 2008 1:28PM
But think of the cock fights!
Marty @ Jun 17th 2008 1:33PM
Or the, er... prick-ly situations? XD
mr mobius @ Jun 17th 2008 12:50PM
How can something this basic be as fun? It's the type of thing that has made me want to buy Spore and if the requirements for the game are the same as for the creator then my laptop can cope. If only it came out now and not in September. Typical that it would come out as I go back to university and have no time for gaming.
Ah well.

There's my first guy :D
I love the demo btw

What's with the dancing? I couldn't stop laughing.
knighty @ Jun 17th 2008 12:54PM
Hahaha, try spinning the galaxy around on the menu screen.
Drago Dracini @ Jun 17th 2008 12:55PM
I've been playing this all day. ;p It's more fun that i thought... Can't wait for the actual game!
Grant @ Jun 17th 2008 1:01PM
Charging $10 for a demo?
The EA Money train is warming up early for this one i guess.
melloncollie @ Jun 17th 2008 1:14PM
It's not a demo.
It's a creature creator.
slicerd @ Jun 17th 2008 1:20PM
Yeah and people complained when Penny Arcade released RSPD for $20 now we get a demo and people have no problem shelling out $10 for it.
Grant @ Jun 17th 2008 1:30PM
Not a demo?
is it a partial release of a video game in order to gain interest.
Hm, sounds suspiciously like a demo to me.
and slicerd. I have no idea what you just said.
LaughingTarget @ Jun 17th 2008 1:36PM
If you're paying $10, you're not looking very hard. Plenty of places offering it up for free if you buy the full game in September.
Grant @ Jun 17th 2008 2:47PM
LaughingTarget,
I know what you're saying, but it's kinda how they sell in-game content that can easily be unlocked. A demo is a demo no matter how you spin it, and no one should ever charge for one.
It's a good indication on how much the hype machine is carrying this one, because unless something has this much hype, no one would pay for it.

I'm not going to flood YouTube.
Ghostbuddy @ Jun 17th 2008 1:26PM
The Spore index has just reached 40,000 creatures.
Seriously, my POS computer can't even run the demo. But just refreshing the "new creature page" at spore.com every 10 seconds has been enough to keep me busy for the past 15 mintues.
Hope to get a new computer in a couple months. Because at very least, the creature editor/ creature phase will be a blast.
michaelportent @ Jun 17th 2008 1:32PM
This game is gonna be teh funz. I agree though, just release the whole trial, we won't mind paying the money! I really hope this game trumps Sims-level popularity.
Joe H @ Jun 17th 2008 2:13PM
Honestly... you're not paying $10 for a demo..... you're paying $10 to make EA's content for them. The main reason they released this now is so that when the full games out they have thousands of creatures to populate their servers (and therefore other planets) with.
Ironraptor Albion @ Jun 17th 2008 5:07PM
Yanno I had completely forgotten about Will Wright's GDC 2005 convference speech regarding the ever increasing cost of game production, and basically switching the current paradigm to allowusers to create content for the game.
However, I am NOT happy with SecuROM's presence in Spore, especially if it has a limited activation system like Mass Effect. So I am holding off on the pre-order, I'll wait 'til the more gullible people buy the game and then encounter limited activation issues or secuROM related "program will not run, emulation software detected" issues, and see what happens.
theturtle363 @ Jun 17th 2008 2:24PM
I created a gorilla made out of grass, a four legged 12ft tall dinosaur, and a six legged, six armed, mace tailed crocodile
Grant @ Jun 17th 2008 2:56PM
Jenkins: "How about we just make the creature creation portion away as part of the game, this way we can have people make the starting creatures for us!"
Boss: "Completely consumer created content in the final game? Sounds like it will saved time and money in development, I like it! I don't like just giving away a part of the final game though."
Jenkins: "Charge for a demo.... But how will we get the people who are still skeptical?"
Boss: "Just keep chopping the game up into smaller and smaller portions until we don't feel bad about giving away one of the portions. Sell the Rest for Micro-payments. Profit!!!"
Jenkins: "I guess thats why you're the boss."
