Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been temporarily suspended and its programming team transitioned into assist mode, according to a translation of a Famitsu interview with Versus director Tetsuya Nomura (scanned here). Nomura explained that Square Enix's top priority is completing work on Final Fantasy XIII, which means the Versus team has placed its project on ice and headed across the hall to lend a hand. A few remaining designers are still working on conceptual art for Versus, and the story is supposedly complete. Despite the stoppage, Nomura did confirm that Versus will still be featured at Square Enix's pretentious, invite-only "DKΣ3713" event in August, alongside Plain Old Final Fantasy XIII, in non-playable format (read: "a minute of ambiguous footage in a closed theater").
Update: Square Enix has denied the report, but has confirmed that staff members from Versus are aiding FFXIII's development.

See, here is where it stings. Nomura has stated repeatedly that Kingdom Hearts 3 will not begin production until FFXIII Versus is finished...

I actually think this is good news. Maybe adding to the team to push it out this year.

Hey, you never know. If they are short on cash, RC could prove to be right. They may be rushing for a holiday 2008 relesae. Perhaps it fell back to Q1 2009 but rather than annoying a delay, they decided to double manpower to allow:
A. A bit of extra polish,
B. A bit of insurance against another setback and other competition outdoing them(not likely but possible if say IU or other games get released first. Perhaps some hidden rpg e3 gems slated for Q1 2009 or xmas 2008 on the ps3 or 360?)
C. Nice holiday sales

It's certainly possible.
Have they even published a game on PS3 yet? Since FFXII they really haven't been very active in the home console space. They had that half-assed downloadable title for Wii, and they've published a shooter on 360...anything else?

I bet the real reason behind Square Enix putting Final Fantasy Versus XIII on hold, is to start work on that STUPID remake that everybody wants.(i don't want it/i want the original game)
I guess Square Enix decided. "Hey, which game will make us more money?" "An original game (Final Fantasy Versus XIII) or an HD remake of an old game(Final Fantasy VII)?"
We all know the answer.

I doubt that's the case, but if it is then they certainly made the right choice. It's pretty safe to say more people want an FF7 remake.

Yes, a FF7 remake would move some consoles IMO. I know I would definitely buy that.

hell i would buy it. ive tried to play FF7 a couple times in the past year or so but i never get very far cause the graphics hurt my eyes lol. an HD remake would be right up my alley. but if FFvXII is like Kingdom Hearts, like Sir Fidlious Wong said a couple post up, then i want that too. win-win for me cause im buying both whenever they drop.

But an FF7 remake would consume as much resources as making the game that they've already done a lot of work on, i mean they would have to scrap virtually all of FF7's resources to revamp it for the modern day
Certainly it would be worth it, but it would be too taxing

I think we should run a Joystiq pool. All the regulars get to guess how many days THIS account keeps from being banned. How about it, Wii60 Warrior?

@ fenix
It was aight. But you know how people on Joystiq get. Rather than be real and address people by their user names they try to be "clever" and come up with these cute nicknames.
I may hate Sir Fid but the least I can do (at least in my mind and with my upbringing) is address him by what he wants to be called online.
But w/e I like this current username. Its from a novel that I really love.
Did you buy GRID by the way?

Oh come on! Wouldn't you boys rather have an original game? Something new? Something Fresh? Why do you want a game that you already played?
See, this is the reason why developers won't try new things or create new things. because they know FOOLS like you will go out an buy the same game over and over again.
All they have to do is touch up the graphics a little bit, an you'll buy it in a second. You already own the stupid game. Just play it on your Playstation. (2,3 and PSP)

The game they are working on now is an original game. So at least we have that coming. But FFVII is a legend. I would love to see a modern remake. There aren't many games that I would actually buy a second time in the form of a remake, but that is one of them.

Because square has been sucking it up lately with their FF games and frankly I have 0 excitement for 13 or this versus game. What the hell is it anyway, a fighting game? We all know square enix is great at making non rpg games *cough* bouncer, project slyphseed *cough* lol.
And yes, if all they did was update the graphics and maybe the fighting system just a bit, then I would buy it again because it's one of the greatest games ever made and in my top 3 favorite games ever. Hell it's basically the only JRPG old or new that I can still play. They should stop wasting everyone's time with all of these FF remakes for DS and get to the one everyone wants.
I wouldn't want them really messing with anything other than the graphics though because like I said, I think they've been sucking it up lately and any changes would probably completely fuck the remake up.

As one of the few who knows about FF7 cause of their friends but never played it, I would probably pick up a revamped FF7. But at the rate square is going it will look just as dated as the one on PS1 does now to me.

I guess this means that ff 13 will come out in 09, and that versus will come out in 2010.

early 09 is what I believe?
plus its crunch time so this may even come out this year.
No disrespect to Square Enix but they were wasting time I mean they should have been put these guys to work harder not that I want them to work too hard but since like 05 this game beenin development and they still dont seem to be able to get 1 game out I mean unless that Crystal tool technology actually had them thinking maybe we should port this to another system then why is it taking so long.

I won't know if I care about any of the Final Fantasy XIII games until I play them and see if I like the characters and story and so on. Final Fantasy XII wasn't too good in these parts, Vaan sort of proving the point on his own.
