School was in session yesterday at the NLGD Festival of Games in Utrecht, The Netherlands as industry icon Ralph Baer opened the event by taking the region's mayor to town in a game of Pong. The match was played on a classic 1960's era machine, and saw the father of the gaming industry defeating the mayor 2-0. Clearly, even at 86 years young, Baer can sure swing a mean paddle.
As one of Europe's largest gaming events, the NLGD Festival of Games offers a stage for people to gather and discuss the continent's growing presence in the world of gaming. Said Seth van der Meer, chairman of the NLGD, "The first day of the conference has set the tone for an exciting lineup over the next two days," which includes keynotes, more than 75 lectures, and even a career fair. However, we seriously doubt any will measure up to the awesomeness of Baer's old school Pong throw down.

The headline sounds like Baer has crushed someone called "Utrecht, the Netherlands Mayor." It conjures up images of a large, powerful viking-type warrior. The legend of Ralph Baer grows...

I heard that when he was a boy, he killed an 8-foot-tall adult black bear with his baer hands.

Baer likely pulled out a trick that the original brown box had that most people aren't used to- you can control the ball with an additional paddle that's on the side of the box. YOu can make it swerve up and down ridiculously.
I played a game vs. Ralph in front of a crowd about 10 years ago- IT was a sedate first serve, then once I settled in, he whipped out this ridiculous english and swerved right around me. It played for a good laugh in the room as my jaw dropped.
Then I figured it out and schooled the third shot right around him and he quickly closed up the demo and moved on to rest of his presentation.
Good demo, great guy. (And I got to play vs. Ralph on the original brown box, how FRIGGIN AWESOME is that?)
