See TF2's Pyro's new weapons, achievements
The big overhaul of Team Fortress 2's Pyro class won't arrive until tomorrow, but Valve is pulling the veil off of the changes today, including three new weapons and 35 new achievements for the firestarter.
At the top there, you see the Flare Gun, which replaces the Pyro's shotgun and lets you light up enemies at long range. In the middle? It's the Axtinguisher, the melee weapon that always makes a critical hit on flaming enemies. Finally, there's the Back Burner, which is guaranteed to crit if it hits a foe from behind.
If we still haven't cured your pyromania (we've been waiting all post to say that) check out all the details right here.

I feel like Valve doesn't love me unless I own the PC version. :(
brokenscope @ Jun 18th 2008 1:03PM
For some reason I'm inclined to believe its MS at fault not valve.
Unless someone has announced an actual reason.
FOXHOUND @ Jun 18th 2008 1:18PM
Gabe Newell> -Throws a chicken drumstick bone at the PS3- That's all the updates you get for THE ORANGE BOX. Haw haw! >:B
All jokes aside, THE ORANGE BOX definitely threw me back on PC gaming again after a very long hiatus spent console gaming.
Joeshie @ Jun 18th 2008 1:26PM
Just get the PC version. It can run on really old machines just fine and the community is larger and better on the PC. Plus you get all the custom maps and obviously the updates.
zero @ Jun 18th 2008 1:31PM
And you would be correct.
Jeff @ Jun 18th 2008 1:59PM
They have to pay for certification of every update... and MS might be being a jerk about releasing stuff so significant without charging.
So odds are, once everything is said and done, you guys will be paying for an expansion with all of the major updates simultaneously.
brokenscope @ Jun 18th 2008 2:07PM
Im also not sure how the added achievements will work. every game gets 1k points, and I don't think they can change point values.
Korova *Pyro aspect* @ Jun 18th 2008 4:31PM
Call me an analyst, but I predict that the TF2 360 will get an update once all class updates are complete and will have extra achievements (they are allowed to put in new achievements if the update is big - I think Oblivion did).
It will probably cost.
Also, I predict that people will buy more videogames in the future.
glutto @ Jun 18th 2008 6:10PM
Valve is the only loving I get these days, since I don't play consoles nearly as much these days.
ThePunisher @ Jun 18th 2008 1:09PM
Haha, I can imagine the many piles of noobs being killed by the backstinguisher.
GenBanks @ Jun 18th 2008 1:04PM
Cool! Looks like this time around they haven't been shy about having unlockable weapons that increase combat effectiveness.
The backburner will be very effective for stealthy pyros!
Marty @ Jun 18th 2008 2:45PM
Well, last time was for the medic, which isn't really a big damage-dealing class anyway.
Paulo @ Jun 18th 2008 1:07PM
This is PURE jesus.
Shadow Hog @ Jun 18th 2008 1:10PM
Don't forget the leafblower being added to the normal flamethrower!
capt_carl @ Jun 18th 2008 1:14PM
I like the new alt-fire mode.
Beanie @ Jun 18th 2008 1:29PM
Too bad you aren't going to be able to light anyone on fire, because every one will be playing as Pyro! Seriously, how are we supposed to do the achievements without waiting a couple weeks for the teams full of pyros to die down?
sicsided @ Jun 18th 2008 1:38PM
just play as demo then and blow the hell out of them with your mines everywhere.
michas_pi @ Jun 18th 2008 1:32PM
Hubba hubba hubba!
glutto @ Jun 18th 2008 6:12PM
Woop woop woop woop woop woop woop!!!
*flamethrow!!*
Johnny Wolf @ Jun 18th 2008 1:40PM
"OMGWTFBBQ: Kill an enemy with a taunt."
I wasn't aware that his flame-Hadouken does damage?
Nikonov @ Jun 18th 2008 3:18PM
It doesn't, yet.
sicsided @ Jun 18th 2008 1:42PM
The thing I wanna know right now, is whether you can compress burst other teammates shots, to get a richocet type effect, in case there is a really outta place sentry to get too.
chefmcelroy @ Jun 18th 2008 2:00PM
This is going to be a great update. Although teams will have way too many pryos for a few days (I feel bad for the people who play this weekend for the first time and have to face 3-4 pyros at all times) I am excited to see the balancing issues with these new guns, and hope that it doesn't make the game too ridiculous (And definitely I am looking forward to future updates).
lantus @ Jun 18th 2008 1:56PM
Yeah well I'm still waiting for the first one Valve!
WiNG [Life in a Game] @ Jun 18th 2008 2:00PM
Joystiq you forgot the biggest change, the ability for the Pyro to deflect missiles and push enemies.
mundox @ Jun 18th 2008 2:22PM
"Finally, there's the Back Burner, which is guaranteed to crit if it hits a foe from behind."
OH GOD YES!!!!!!
scraps678 @ Jun 18th 2008 3:08PM
OMFGWTFBBQ achievement is going to be awesome.
chispito @ Jun 18th 2008 3:54PM
The achievements in general seem a lot easier than the medic achievements.
Joeshie @ Jun 18th 2008 4:10PM
Yeah, that's a godsend. I think that Valve said that they purposfully made some of the medic achievements really hard so that they could get a feel of what the community wanted.
I guess it's pretty clear that the community wants feasible achievements.
chispito @ Jun 18th 2008 5:11PM
I didn't even bother with the medic achievements, I just took the week or so of craziness to try and pump up my HW stats.
Korova *Pyro aspect* @ Jun 18th 2008 4:55PM
These look totally badass. Pyro is the ultimate close range fighter now (with a flare gun to help at distance). Just need to practice switching flame to ax real quick.
Oh, man, how many class updates are left? I want this on CCCLX so bad.
glutto @ Jun 18th 2008 6:24PM
Press Q or previous weapon.
It's fiendishly fun as it is, and should be a riot with the additions.
chispito @ Jun 18th 2008 5:19PM
It's also nice that they really are improving the class as a whole with the air compress thing. I don't exactly see how it will stop melee rocket kills of both the pyro and the soldier, but it's pretty cool nonetheless.
The flare gun sounds like fun but will make the pyro even more defenseless in the water.
Kassu @ Jun 18th 2008 5:28PM
I love Valve for being one of the few (Or the only?) company that actually likes PC users, unlike most of the other ones who regularly kick PC nerds in the balls and laugh.
Kenny @ Jun 18th 2008 5:42PM
I know what you mean donald... even though I have the PC version :P, I can't WAIT to use these new weapons, I feel xited just thinking about weilding one of those bad bowas... CANT WAIT TILL 2MORROW!!
Donald @ Jun 18th 2008 5:50PM
There's an achievement missing its LOL and M8.
JimThePea @ Jun 18th 2008 7:03PM
"If we still haven't cured your pyromania (we've been waiting all post to say that) check out all the details right here."
Err, wouldn't talking about all this new Pyro stuff make our pyromania worse as opposed to ridding us of the desire to unleash fiery death upon our enemies?
Not to be a killjoy or anything...
Korova *Pyro aspect* @ Jun 18th 2008 11:24PM
It didnt cure it. It fed it, so it quited down for a little while, but any moment its gonna jump back up on the table and stick its wet tongue right back out.
:P
Purple Haze @ Jun 18th 2008 11:39PM
Flare gun sounds cool, not sure about the other two though. The back burner sounds like it'll have it's uses and I guess the new axe will be good against heavies, but I don't see any other time it might be helpful.
