250,000 Spore creatures shared, interstellar plague to follow
Electronic Arts announced late last night that 250,000 new creatures had been uploaded to the Sporepedia since the program got into various Sporeophile's hands mandibles. The company claims two creatures are being shared every second, with the latest data from our Spore page (image after the break) showing that 377,200 creatures have been created since those numbers were last updated on Spore.com.
Quick math break: 377,200 - 78,762 penis creatures = 298,438 actual creatures.
We've certainly been having fun around here making our adorable animals, ready to rule the galaxy on Sept. 7. The Spore Creature Creator demo (with about 25% of the retail content) and the full $10 version are available now.

I'm surprised the Joystiq crew hasn't made a creature from down under. Specially Justin, we know his legacy for steeds.

You could download the Mac version from the UK site on the 17th.
The more you know...

He's not talking about Australia...

The trial version is nice, but why did they promise a June 17 release and then not even have it available for download until the 18th. And then, after that, not even have the Mac version available for download until an unforseen point in the future. EA let Transgaming handle distribution of the Mac version and they or EA (not sure who's fault it is) completely screwed the Mac community who were really excited about this. I wish they would just give us a more concrete timeframe.
chispito @ Jun 19th 2008 12:55PM
It's a game. You have a Mac. Use Boot Camp like you'd have to for the other 95% of fun games.
Korova *of the highlands* @ Jun 19th 2008 1:02PM
Really! Still no Mac version. Phhfff.
I was gonna check it out this weekend.
Korova *of the highlands* @ Jun 19th 2008 1:19PM
Correction. There is no Mac download version. You can order the box version which is Mac/PC.
What is the big deal, moo83?
Drago Dracini @ Jun 19th 2008 2:28PM
Oh lordie! No mac version! We must protect the ultimate gaming computer and get it Spore ASAP!
Jonah Falcon @ Jun 19th 2008 12:10PM
I still can't get my preorder of the full version of the Creator, despite help from the higher-ups at Maxis. Electronic Arts should go fuck itself with the Download Manager. It's everything that Steam wanted to AVOID being.
JerJer @ Jun 19th 2008 12:27PM
you mean everything steam was until recent years?
chispito @ Jun 19th 2008 12:58PM
Jer- Huh? Steam started out decent and has only gotten better. What are you talking about?
svenhoek @ Jun 19th 2008 2:21PM
Steam started out decent? I didnt have it back then, but when it first came out there was nothing but bitching and moaning. Slow download speeds, people couldnt play the HARD COPIES of their games because Steam was so bogged down and buggy, and people generally just didnt like the idea of having to run the program to play their games. That is not a decent start.
Donald @ Jun 19th 2008 12:15PM
You forgot to account for the approximately 25,390 Pokemon that certain sites created.
Saria the Cat @ Jun 19th 2008 1:10PM
Link?
Donald @ Jun 19th 2008 5:55PM
4chan's /v/, not linking because I don't believe in sending people to an IRL Mos Eisley spaceport.

I'm having lots of fun with the trial version and really want the full version but I was wondering if there was some way of getting it free (through offers) so I don't have to pay 10$ for it.
Here are the only I've uploaded so far.

Here are two I've uploaded. I want the full version of the creator but I can wait until September.

various torrent sites have the "hp version" which is still a demo but with 75% of the stuff unlocked.
Im not liking the youtube feature. Its flooding youtube with 1 minute clips of crappy creations from thousands of users. I would of prefered no youtube features so only those smart enough to use a screen grab program like fraps and then edit the movie would be able to upload. Thus weeding out 95% of the junk videos. Now its very difficult to find quality creature creations on youtube.
LordChimp @ Jun 19th 2008 1:33PM
I agree. I am tired of seeing a lot of garbage creations on youtube. It is a neat idea but like you said, it's flooding the site like crazy.
moonbastic @ Jun 19th 2008 1:31PM
Is anyone else finding it impossible to register the paid version of the CC? I can't create a Spore name through the client. Been trying for days now.
jimdscott @ Jun 27th 2008 9:53AM
I'm having the same problem. I've contacted EA support, but the responses have been totally unhelpful. The last response said "If you bought a copy, you don't need to register it". I have read that your screen name cannot include any variation of the word "Spore", so be sure to remove that. I've tried multiple logins, ids, email addresses, and so on. I have not tried disabling my hardware firewall, but I guess that's next on the list.
Mike @ Jun 19th 2008 1:38PM
I'm afraid I'm going to have to skip SPORE thanks to EA's stupid DRM methods.
What does it do? Not only does it install itself to your computer without a word of notification as well as disable your firewall, dvd drives and cd/dvd burning software. It limits you to installing your game on your PC up to 3 times.

Thanks to EA's stupid DRM I'll be SKIPPING SPORE.

Let's also not forget the MASSIVE security breech that sharing your creature presents, because if you've shared your creature, your computer's user name is encrypted into the creature's image file. And it CANNOT be removed by hexing it.
This makes it problematic because there is no documentation to say that Spore Creature Creator uses your computer user name to upload the creature image to it's Sporepedea.
So, if a talented hacker is able to decrypt said image files, guess what? They've got your computer user name.

congratulations?
KarlW @ Jun 19th 2008 2:24PM
I have to agree - I was going to buy Spore, but now I think I'll just leave it until the DRM issue is sorted. Or crack my legally-purchased copy.
Hopefully the DRM doesn't work on the Mac version.

Can Spore creatures have feathers, fur, or scales?
Every one I've seen looks like it was just shaved.

In reference to the Trogdor attempt, you can in fact make a single arm, by bringing the wrist joints together. Also, a superior Trogdor has been made.
