Saint's Row 2 'a very differentiated product'
This is precisely why we're not in video game marketing. If we were trying to get our open-ended gangster romp into the hands of millions, we'd be sure to have "Just like Grand Theft Auto IV!" emblazoned across not only the game's cover, but all of its magazine ads, television commercials and special edition lunch boxes. Of course, the major failure in our marketing strategy would be in its honesty -- our game, "Radical Car Nicking," really would just be Grand Theft Auto with slightly murkier textures. That's why we're not in game design either, but we sure are good at copying and pasting quotes from THQ CEO, Brian Farrell! Like this one (via Next-Gen), from an investor meeting held on Wednesday in Chicago, where he said, "We think that we have a very differentiated product with Saints Row 2." Farrell acknowledged Rockstar's opus as "the leader in the genre," but noted that Volition's bandanna-wearing blockbuster would go in a different creative direction with "silly, over-the-top gameplay."
We've certainly seen shades of that in the most recent Saint's Row 2 trailer, what with the encouragement of public streaking and outrageous misuse of sewage. It's out -- and very differentiated -- this October.

In all honesty I'm gonna have more fun spending my money on eating pizza and getting fat than playing a video game. Life is short, eat more.

Ludwig, you have a singular vision for game design. Have you considered getting a job as a developer? I hear Majestic is hiring.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 20th 2008 9:39AM
I don't think Ludwig's interested in making nothing but shovelware

I kinda like Saints Row better than GTA. GTA was good but i dunno, it just wasn't all that fun imo. I had more fun with GTA jumping out of helicopters and into buildings than any mission in the game

I actually played Saints Row for the first time in my life last week for forty minutes, thinking that it was Grand Theft Auto 4 until my friend told me otherwise (it was over at his house on his 360). Yet GTA4 got better reviews. I wonder why...
Ninegauger @ Jun 20th 2008 1:29AM
More over the top? That sounds good actually as Grand Theft Auto IV is a little dry (i.e. realistic) compared to the others in a few different ways.

read: more GTA than GTA! Buy now!

I don't get why Saints Row is getting blasted for being like GTA and somehow every other FPS/RTS/RPG/MMORPG doesn't get blasted for using the same core mechanics as their competitors.
I liked Saints Row just as much as I liked any GTA game. In some cases, it did things better. A lot of the missions in Saints Row were pretty entertaining (I really liked the hitman missions) and the car pimpin' was great. The game was fun. Simple as that.
I would probably pick up Saints Row Two if I still had a 360.

SR is blasted by many because its mostly Ps2/PS3 owning GTA fans. They couldnt play SR1, and naturally bashed it. But now SR2 is 360, ps3 and pc. Once all these guys actually get to play a SR game (especially one with as many features and new stuff as SR1) they will be singing a second tune. Then it will only be the wii owners trashing the game.
Just watch, Saints row 2, 8.5/10 by most sites, despite it being better then GTA4. SR3 will then pick up a 10/10 if they ever make one. You can quote me on that average rating there for SR2, Im not Michael Patcher so I should be right.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 20th 2008 9:42AM
Yeah nevermind that SR 1 was actually a really mediocre game that just took GTA's few problems and fixed them, but didn't bother taking everything that GTA does well.
The supporters of the first SR make me laugh because they said it was so much better than san andreas, a (at the time) 3 YEAR OLD PS2 GAME.
Geist @ Jun 20th 2008 2:33AM
As long as they're not using that stupid 'bling bling' picture that made me want to punch the monitor, the game could be all about kicking puppies for all I could care.
John @ Jun 20th 2008 3:42AM
I remember my brother telling me to pick up the original SR, and I told him I don't like shitty GTA clones.
Well, then I got gamefly and figured what the hell, I'll try it out.
Blows GTA out of the water. Customizing your character and having your cars always available, beats the hell out of playing Stereotypical charater #8 and having to jack a car every time you want to start a mission, or having to strategically place them in front of our house in advance.
riggs @ Jun 20th 2008 10:34AM
Its called GRAND THEFT AUTO
keywords: THEFT and AUTO
John @ Jun 20th 2008 9:39AM
Then why are there missions you have to deliver fucking pizza?
OTAM @ Jun 20th 2008 6:49PM
Yeah and that's the problem with most people now as well. They see the game and call it a "shitty GTA clone" without even ever having played it.

Nice to see so many people likeing SR2, SR1 was great, way more fun than GTA IV. If they fix the online it will be awsome.
I agree with 007craft all the PS3 fans couldn't play SR1 so they bashed it. GTA IV took a lot of features from SR1. I bet they all think Rockstar thought of them.
nealbailey @ Jun 20th 2008 8:41AM
Ok, ok lets not all get carried away. Saint's Row was fun and it was a good game for the time it was released (at the beginning of the current-gen cycle) but let's not try to compare SR to GTA4. There is no comparison as SR is a cheap clone of previous GTA games including the horrible shooting mechanics and bad graphics.
We'll have to wait and see how SR2 does but SR1 is inferior to GTA4 in every way.
aggrazel @ Jun 20th 2008 10:00AM
SR2 will be better than GTAIV as long as they leave out the friend calling you every other mission to go 'hang out'. What a waste of freaking time.
dave @ Jun 20th 2008 10:01AM
I just hope THQ still lets me blaze in game so I can blaze in real life at the same time, that was fun and creative and it would've been nice to smoke a blunt on gta IV.
t_m @ Jun 20th 2008 10:31AM
I just hope the people playing it realise its silly, over-the-top gameplay and don't take it seriously.
Though, looking at all the idiotic, wannabe gangsters hanging out in their tricked out Ford Fiestas I somehow doubt it. sigh.
