This trend of the "faceless" woman isn't anything new in the publishing world. There's a slew of female-oriented fiction out there featuring a beautiful woman on the cover with her face / head conveniently sliced away at the top of the book jacket. There's quite a bit of commentary online about the merits / demerits of this trend.

As for the new Tomb Raider game, this certainly is one way to make gamers think about Angelina Jolie without paying her for a photo. It's all about subliminal advertising...

Reminds me of the box art for Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core. The intention is the emphasize that she's ready to fight. You can't even see much cleavage and her chest is mostly covered by the game logo.

Ahh for the objectifying of female protagonists

Next they just need to sexy up Samus, that'll be the last bastion of humanized female protagonists

Yeah, but i try to pretend that didn't happen

It's when (or if) they start doing that in actual Metroid games that i will lament the doom of Samus

Did you finish MP3:Corruption with 100%? There are some sexy shots of Samus in her blue suit.

I'm pretty sure they already did. She isn't completely nude though, just in a bikini.

who cares if you cant see her face. Infact, I think it makes it rather more exiting. I know I got/am exited (about the game)

I like the box. More importantly, I saw this posted on another site today straight from Eidos. This was from a general press release and not specifically for a Wii site:

EXCLUSIVE Wii FEATURES

• Built specifically for the Wii: Level design and environmental challenges are designed to take advantage of the unique capabilities of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.

• Exclusive Multi-Tool: Excavate hidden secrets with this modernized and expanded tool kit that includes:

• Compressed Air Gun: A high-powered instrument used to clear away dirt or silt.

• Acetylene Torch: An advanced, multipurpose torch used to weld metal objects, set fire to objects, and melt ice.

• Chisel: Pry apart objects or chip away sediment in order to discover hidden secrets.

• Pliers: Extract elements from ancient devices.

• Exclusive Active Aim Combat System: The combat system has been enhanced for more fluid character control and more precise aiming with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.

• Expanded Camera Control: Take more control of the camera using the Wii Remote. If the Wii Remote is not pointed at the screen, the camera will follow Lara automatically. If it is pointed at the screen, the game will enter a “free look” mode.

So - it looks like we are getting some special love based on the Wii control set. I don't doubt that everything will be a little prettier to look at on the XBOX/PS3/PC releases, but we will have "more fluid character control and more precise aiming".

Sweeeeet!

That's what Ubisoft says, but then they give us some crappy spinoffs and party games, so we'll see.
