Twilight Hack prevention already thwarted
Nintendo's anti-Twilight Hack hack (also known as Wii menu update 3.3) has already been, erm, hacked. Coders at the HackMii blog have figured out the code used to essentially block the homebrew community and found a way past it. While the fix hasn't been released yet, it's only a matter of time. Note to Nintendo: As with Sony's PSP, you can only do so much.

Can any of us actually be surprised by this? If someone from a computer or gaming company states that we are taking anti hacking precautions you are bound to find people that are going to try to hack into it just to say that they could. It is just like those morons who say they can't be hurt so they ask you to punch them in the stomach as hard as you can. Eventually you are going to be hit by someone strong enough to really hurt you. You go around announcing something is the anti hack to a current one someone is bound to figure out how to bypass it.

HACK THE PLANET!!!

Wow, that didn't take long. I somehow feel an inkling of pride, too.

Yes pride...yet, shame too... :|

Coming soon:
Wii Menu 3.4
While, yes, there are great uses for hacking a system (hellz yeah, ScummVM on Wii), Nintendo is pretty much obliged to fight these security holes. They know these holes can be exploited for piracy (be it disc-based or download-based), and if they don't try to stop it, it kinda sends a bad message to third-party publishers. Same reason Sony keeps fighting it on PSP.
KarlW @ Jun 20th 2008 3:44AM
Sony threw in the towel long ago. They only make out that they're fixing the holes to prevent the developer exodus.
There are some cool games out for the PSP though - FF7:CC, LocoRoco, and Echochrome to name a few.
Sorry, this is a Wii post. I'll go away now.

No need to preach the PSP to me, buddy. I have one, and love it. Bought several games for it, too. Sure, I do have custom firmware on it and COULD pirate games, but I don't, because it just ain't right.
KeenCommander @ Jun 20th 2008 2:43AM
Took about as long as I expected it would. Give up Nintendo, it's never going to stop and, as long as there's no piracy, they're really doing your system a favor (not like it needs to become any more desirable, but...) Homebrew sold a lot of PSP's, including mine. The people who will play emulators on Wii are the same people who already play emulators on a PC or other console - not your target audience for Virtual Console games. WiiWare piracy is certainly an issue, but legit homebrew should just be left alone. Of course, so far there hasn't been anything compelling enough released to actually warrant the use of this clumsy hack for me, but I still side with them in principle - and the scene always gets better as it goes along.

"as long as there's no piracy,"
lol
Max @ Jun 20th 2008 3:39AM
I know they CAN hack the system, but what have they done with it so far? There's no hot shit applications worth bothering with the hacks at the moment....
...or is there?
BPM [MKWii: 2578 3585 8392] @ Jun 20th 2008 3:56AM
Being able to play the original Sam & Max, Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, etc. on Wii is good enough for me.
CubeGuy @ Jun 20th 2008 3:53AM
I get the feeling that Nintendo could have tried a lot harder to fill the security hole. Maybe the update department is secretly a fan of the homebrew scene. It really wouldn't surprise me.
Ridgecity @ Jun 20th 2008 5:46AM
I don't think the patch it's really for all these geeks that probably have a hard drive inside their Wii already and some l33t red leds added, but for the new people buying stuff will not be able to run piracy. These guys were happy the homebrew was still there after the patch... And all those that say hacking is for homebrew must be smoking something, Not to mention Nintendo is selling these games, emulator were supposed to be for stuff not available anymore.
It's going to be a bloody battle but who cares, wasn't the Wii pure gimmicks and no one should play Wii games?

They as business are obliged to do it - to prevent some pro bootleggers taking advantage of it legally.
Though of course, who wouldn't want to have a simple possibility to play games off freshly burned DVD+-R. Actual lack of demos and average quality of Wii titles only contribute to the push for cracking Wii wide open.

You don't hear about people hacking 360s or PS3's...
Word to Nintendo: People are getting BORED with your casual game approach. Release something people can actually play.
Monkeys Suck @ Jun 20th 2008 10:25AM
Xbox is already hacked. It's a firmware modification. PS3 still isn't fully hacked, as it's very complicated. Do your research.
Jason @ Jun 20th 2008 10:29AM
Yeah, but Microsoft can ban consoles that go on Live if they detect it's modded. I haven't heard about nintendo swinging the banhammer yet.
CIA @ Jun 20th 2008 10:44AM
The XBOX 360 has not been hacked yet. Certain DVD drives used in XBOX 360's, however, can have their firmware modified to run copied discs of retail games only. Copied games ONLY. No unsigned code, homebrew, emulators etc.
