I'm hoping the sci-fi arena will be filled by Aliens: Colonial Marines for the near future... i really hope that game rocks!

All the time periods are pretty full of shooters now, but there are a few alternative settings that they could borrow from movies, etc.. that might work:

M.A.S.H
Police/Crime/Die Hard
Modern Sci-fi (Terminator? Matrix?)
Other modern settings (Triads, Yakuza, China, Russia)
Superhero style (decent Judge Dread, etc..)
Mafia
Western
Cyberpunk/Steampunk/Shadowrun (hey, it had the makings of a great game)
Alternate histories (the Nazis invade the US plot was a good idea, even if it didn't work)
Africa (like farcry 2)
Explorers (indy/drake's fortune)

I'm kinda amazed that developers only seem to be able to make good FPS games based on wars, if you think of a lot of Cop movies, buddy movies, old Stallone/Arnie movies then they should make great settings and plots for FPS games. (Commando, Rambo, Red Heat, Cobra, etc...)

and not forgetting: Heat!!!

Just brings back wonderful memories of Doogie Howser, and those commercials, "Would you like to know more?"

So what next after this "sci-fi" setting....will they go to the middle ages or something with pikes and the like? Online Jousting with Extendible Joust Stick Perks?

The lazy negligent $$$ makers are Infinity Ward need to make sure their house is clean first, before going off on new ventures. COD4 is a UNPLAYABLE game online. Infinity Ward's smarta** arrogant team refuse to address the endless issues of their online game play in light of making more $$$ off of suckers. The CEO will not care, he has his back account just fine.

Infinity Ward, the incompetent greedy little corp, provides an online experience where 4 out of 5 game sessions will terminate from poor server speed or Users quiting. Contrast that to Halo which switches to another User when a User quites the game.

SUE INFINITY WARD, they are ripe for the pickings.

i would hate infinity ward taking the cod game series to the future, because on modern warfare and ww2, you can keep i realistic, unlike future warfare which would be totally messed up.

Personally i really like the WWII games. However, when Infinity Ward comes back into play I think that they should create a Vietnam game. Because in my opinion Infinity Ward is the absolute best at making first person shooters and at the same time, there is not a single Vietnam game out for the 360 to date. Perhaps they should create a nam that the U.S. won or They could include Canada in the fight!.?

Please no.
There are too many space/future games.
The farthest into the future I would want to go in the COD franchise would be WWIII, set around 2010-2020. So it wouldn't be too future, with space BS.
Im actually happy COD 5 is going back to WWII. I personally LOVE WWII. Dont get me wrong, COD 4 was amazing, but you cant really continue that story.
Another thing the video game industry lacks is Vietnam War games. I think COD: Vietnam would be a great title and a must buy. Ok, I can live with COD5: WWII again, but I really hope COD 6 is a near future WWIII or the Vietnam War.
And guys, give Treyarch another chance.
Yes COD 3 was fail, but they put that together in less than a year. Theyve had lots of time to put together COD 5 and it really looks good. The graphics compare to COD 4, considering it uses the same engine, and the gameplay looks good. The only thing its lacking is the assault rifles. :D

They should bring back a more modern Ghost Recon jungle storm with similar maps but like a c.o.d.4 visual.

I've read through the comments and some say that a Vietnam/Korean War would be cool.
Personally, I think a game around the Korean War would be pretty damn boring (this is coming from a Korean guy).

First off, the weapons are basically the same. For the South Koreans+USA+(insert other nation), they would still be carrying the same weapons: M1 Garands, M2 carbine, etc. Chinese/North Korean weapons: bolt action (Any difference in function from the German K98?), and some weird machine gun.

Secondly, the war itself is not that grand in scale compared to WWII. First off, North Koreans pushed the South Koreans back all the way to a town named Pusan, where S.Koreans were basically trying not to fall into the ocean. Then the Americans charged into Inchon and cut the N. Korean line of attack in half. Then MacArthur just kept pushing north until he reached the border of China. After that, a SHITLOAD of Chinese and North Koreans stormed like crazy down to the 38th parallel and an armistice was proposed. End of war = Okay, but not great game.

I dunno about you guys, but that sounds pretty damn boring compared to the cliched Normandy invasion, or fighting Japanese in the exotic Pacific. Just my 2 cents.

As for CoD6 in the future: Hell-f*cking-yeah.
PS. Pretty damn long, sorry.

It seems to me that too many people are taking 'sci-fi' to mean Halo/Doom/Quake and so on.

Infinity Ward knows the Call of Duty audience favours realism, and moving into the future does not have to betray that legacy at all.

Battlefield 2142 is a piss-poor example, as it totally ignored reality in favour of outdated 80s-90s sci-fi conventions (i.e. mechs and lasers).

All that would have to be done to produce a realistic sci-fi shooter would be start from the modern world and estimate the effects and implications of technologies that are currently in development with long-term future goals. Nanotechnology in particular. Crysis is a much better example of this than any other game I can think of, but even it cut corners that I would expect Infinity Ward to approach more honestly.
