UFC 2009 Undisputed trailer shows advances in sweat rendering
41
We love watching guys pummel each other into a gooey pulp just as much as the next group of gaming bloggers, but we've never understood the appeal of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Sure, a no-holds barred brawl in an octagonal cage of death sounds delightful, but we've found that many of these televised matches quickly end up turning into a bro-hug festival.
However, very few bro-hugs are featured in the above trailer for THQ's UFC 2009 Undisputed -- though there are bro-punches, bro-kicks and bro-body slams abound. True fans of the sport will no doubt be pleased by the trailer's accurate portrayal of a UFC match, though considering the lukewarm reception of most pre-existing UFC titles, we wouldn't blame them for being a cautious lot. Could THQ's offering be the first worthy contender in that narrow genre, or will it, like a flimsy-fisted first-time brawler, be forced to tap out?

It is VERY apparent that the blogger for this site doesn't know WTF he's talking about regarding the sport. Which is unsurprising, considering how "credible" of a reputation this site has in the first place.
But, back on the subject: Mixed Martial Arts is anything BUT a deathmatch. To put things in perspective, there has yet to be a single death involved in the sport. Especially when compared to boxing, which contains at least 3 deaths per year.
With that said, the fighters and athletes involved in this sport have evolved TREMENDOUSLY compared to the jits-only guys like Royce Gracie back when this was just labeled as "NHB". Get your 'ish straight people before making comments like this. If you need a review on it, pop in UFC 60 where Royce gets his ass handed to him by Hughes effortlessly in the first round.
Lastly...I'm still not convinced by this game. Robotic movements, Fight Night caliber animations and what appears to be not much else other than an upgrade from the Smackdown series from our friends at Yuke's. A few of the ground transitions look good, but in no way does this look like the fighters that I'm used to seeing in any manner.
If you want a more thorough education on MMA, pop in an old PRIDE Fc DVD, or watch Shooto, Pancrase, WEC, Icon Sport and a host of other organizations. Then maybe some of the people here, including the oh-so intellectual blogger would know what they're talking about before opening their mouths about the sport.

This blogger is retarded for the comments he made about the UFC. First of all, the way you have portrayed UFC as a 'No-Holds barred Death Match' is retarded in itself. Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA is not anything you described, MMA is consists of many rules and regulations and is quickly becoming a sport which will be universally be recognized. These arent street fighters up there, and if you look at the UFC, you will see that the few street fighters that try to go in MMA fail due to there lack of discipline and skill.
And as for this 'Bro-hug', It is known as wrestling buddy, which is one of the biggest martial arts involved in MMA, including Muay-Thai (A form of Martial Arts) and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (another form of Martial arts).
So inform yourself before saying such idiotic things.

wow. first, what griffin described is what UFC is (not necessarily the death match). Now yes, they use MMA in UFC, but if you wanna get technical, any true master of their main style (ala Royce Gracie) can dominate just about anyone, especially these "masters." what these guys do, especially nowadays, is hug, hold, or just plain beat the shit out of each other. there is no true display of martial involved. don't act like UFC is some ultra platform for showcasing martial arts because it is far from it.
as for the game, it looks like guys pummeling each other into a gooey pulp in a no holds barred death match. just like UFC. looks fun.

Hug hold or beat the shit out of each? Have you ever seen a professional display of wrestling? It is hugging and holding. And beating the shit out of each other is essentially boxing and combinations of Muay Thai. I never once acted in a way you say. MMA is far from a display of these single martial arts, it is a display of the combination. A person who is a master of his main style can, depending on the person, beat others but Royce was in a time in which UFC was pretty much human cock fighting, where competitors would pretty much be allowed to do anything and there were many street brawlers etc. When he was pitted against a modern MMA fighter, ala Matt Hughes, he lost to him via TKO. and also Royce did test positive for steroids so he isn't respectable as a fighter.
Anywho, MMA isnt a showcase of A martial art, as it is a showcase of many combinations of martial arts.

no, you can't just say he tested positive for steroids and leave it at that. he tested positive in 2007, after losing in 2006 to matt hughes. royce gracie by 2006 was 40 dude. matt hughes was only 33. when it gets in that age range, there is CONSIDERABLE differences even being 3 years apart, much less 7. matt hughes is pretty awesome though. gracie in his prime tho, no contest.

How old was Randy Couture when he took Tim Sylvia apart, Biggen? 43? And when he TKO'd Gonzaga? 44? But Gracie gets a pass due to his age? Bull.
Royce Gracie got schooled by Hughes, just like he in his prime would have been taught a lesson by the top ranked UFC fighters of today. He was good for his time but the sport has progressed a hell of a long way since then. And the outcome of the Hughes match proves it.

I won't argue that age doesn't eventually become an issue, but if you think Royce in his prime would beat a guy like Matt Hughes (or, even better, a guy like Georges St. Pierre) then you're quite clearly ignorant to the subject. Masters of one martial art have been phased out because they simply can't compete, contrary to what you said.

No, its just fact, the game has advanced far further than royce's day. There is no longer 1 martial art vs another. It has simply become fact, MMA is a much stronger game and those who participate these days are far stronger, quicker, and skilled.

I never said it would buy it at launch, Biggen, and don't appreciate being attacked for liking something you may not. When it drops in price, I will pick it up. I think that meets the requirement in my "I will buy this game" statement.

No wonder it resembles the WWE games, yukes is making it. well, i guess just like Spike forced the UFC in WWEs place, THQ is doing the same.

As in understand it the previous games haven't done so well due to control issues. If you think about all the different strikes that are allowed while standing, you realise that a couple of face buttons aren't going to cut it. And then you've got to do a control scheme for the ground game too?
I think it's great that the UFC are still trying, but I'd definitely want a demo before paying any money for this. They need to convince people that this will actually *work*.

first of all biggen, ur a douche nozzle, why attack everyone on this post and then put gracie cock in your mouth. Gracie is a roid junkie and hughes beat his ass, would have happend in gracies time as well. But any way, the game honestly looks like ass, not just graphically speaking, but the characters look like they control like wwe games. All i want is a game that plays as smooth as fight night

Ignoring the silly "I don't understand MMA so I'll make allusions to it being Gay" jokes.
this game will be terrible. the simple fact is there is no way to make good controls for something as complicated as Jujitsu there are too many variables and a lot of emphasis on weight placement and pressure points, things that you can't replicate through video game controls.
so this game will do nothing but further the stereotype that MMA is "brutal human cockfighting where grown men beat eachother bloody" And on top of that it re-enforces the "punching good and wrestling bad" crowd that fills sports bars around the country on fight night cheering when some idiot fighter throws a flurry of missed wild punches and then boo when that same fighter gets taken down and flawlessly put into a submission to end the fight.
I'd be more likely to pay money for a video game based on The Last Dragon.
Sho Nuff!

There are alot of variables, but you need to take a step back into reality..
Every sport out there (and their video came counterpart) has alot of variables that are NOT in the game.... When you check someone in Hockey it doesnt require you to indicate where your weight placement is... If your a good checker then its a hard check... same for this game..
If your crap on the ground, dont expect to manipulate your hips/weight...

you know what from the begining conversations yes i say age is a big factor you know why? because if you would put royce gracie up against matt hughes and royce was hugh's same age you dumbass royce gracie would kick matt's ass even though im a huge fan of matt and randy couture? that guy is just a plain freak(freak as in good way) and you cant put him up against royce gracie cause thers no match royce has been fighting since "day 1"
