Call of Duty: World at War co-op multiplayer detailed
There are times when going at it alone just isn't enough, and you want a buddy by your side to help make it through to the day, not to mention help soak up enemy bullets. For this, Activision has revealed how co-op multiplayer will be handled in Call of Duty: World at War, in which players will lace up in the military boots of either U.S. Marines or Russian soldiers in both the South Pacific and European theaters of war.
Specifically, the Treyarch-developed shooter will include four-player online co-op for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, while the console versions will also allow soldiers to pair up offline for local split-screen gameplay, with "a unique co-op mode for two players" reserved for soldiers waggling on the Wii. However, the game's online focus won't end with simply gunning down enemy soldiers and offering moral support to buddies trying to make it through the game's "darker themes." Activision notes that Call of Duty: World at War will shell out persistent experience points to players participating in both competitive and cooperative online battles, as well as a difficulty curve that will scale depending on "a player's experience rank and rank of the player's friends."

No Price?

*Captain Price
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:14AM
Price is a IW character so its highly unlikely.
I have COD3 for 360 and Big Red One for PS2 which I really enjoyed so I don't see why I wouldn't buy this one. Treyarch is OK in my book. The trailer looks amazing and from the sounds of the games features it will be great so fuck off haters.
Vcize @ Jun 23rd 2008 10:18AM
A preemptive strike this time, nice Fenix
Obie @ Jun 23rd 2008 10:53AM

Gratsi, gratsi.
Jakka @ Jun 23rd 2008 8:36AM
Sounds pretty damn sweet. It's gonna be the first game to have Co-Op so IWbots can finally stop the "Gheyarch iz so totally copying CoD4" bullshit.
Rodrigo @ Jun 23rd 2008 8:41AM
there is going to be a wii version?? and with online? i remember when i used to have my wii i couldn't play online because i didn't have a wireless modem :( ohh well it went back to wal mart the next week :).
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:19AM

One morsel of information that piqued my taste buds was how World at War will utilize the Call of Duty 4®: Modern Warfare engine. I suppose calling World at War a themed Call of Duty 4 may very well end up a correct assessment - which would be a good start in securing gamers. I wonder if ranking up and unlocking perks can also happen offline and not in multiplayer? I don't know if I would like it if they allowed it. I am very interested to see what new perks will appear in the game.

This game will be lucky enough to make just a 1/3 of what CoD4 made in $$.
copa @ Jun 23rd 2008 8:58AM
Sadly, that's not true. Look at Guitar Hero for an example of what happens when a franchise with a strong brand name is handed off to a second-rate developer.
Sales are very strong, because your average consumer doesn't differentiate between development studios.
MrGutts @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:03AM
I don't know man, I think they are just trying to get something out on the market place before the CoD series starts to cool down.
With them going for the WWII story again they need to make some drastic improvements to pull the fans.
Jakka @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:51AM
CoD4 wasn't a drastic improvement. In fact it was just a CoD2 reskin(Yes I went there!) yet it sold Ten Million copies.
Kweli @ Jun 23rd 2008 10:04AM
Besides the people that read gaming websites, NO ONE is going to know this game was made by another company...
It will get alot of sales because of the hype from the last one
Anticrawl @ Jun 23rd 2008 2:37PM

Finally another person with a mind of their own. COD4 was fun for a week or so. But it was honestly just COD2 with sprinting and gimmicy perks. What's worse is that having the gameplay from COD2 based in a modern setting nothing made sense. Sure COD4 would have been amazing were it set in WWII but there is nothing modern about running into the open mindlessly, screaming and throwing grenades everywhere.
I personally don't like WWII shooters, but COD4 would have made sense in the gameplay department as one. Bring on the next run-of-the-mill FPS.
While I wait I'm gonna go play inventive games from the FPS genre that add new twists to gameplay other than "point and shoot with a new gun." One of those games is Shadowrun. And bring on the Mirror's Edge DICE, I'll be waiting.
ill trooper @ Jun 23rd 2008 3:31PM
Jakka, Anticrawl - Overruled. You see, you have it twisted - CoD4 _is_ great for that reason: exactly _because_ the play mechanic _is_ the solid style from CoD2, balanced with a nice set of fun dynamic levels, set in great locations, excellent sound, great visuals, and updated weapons and strategies. With a vastly improved multiplayer, even YOU GUYS would have to admit that the multiplayer aspect is extremely updated, and far from the CoD2 retread you act like CoD4 is.
I totally respect not liking a game, but take the arrogance of the 'finally a person who has a mind of their own' statement and suck it off in the back alley. YOU not liking a game does not mean CoD enthusiasts are blind lemmings that don't know quality. After all, it was an installment in a series, so there is going to be some similarity and consistancy, and CoD4 took aim at a lofty target, and nailed it.
browntown @ Jun 23rd 2008 8:57AM
The co-op is great and all, but with resistance 2 coming out this fall, im not buying cod 5, cod 6, now thats a keeper.
SoxFan13 @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:24AM
Why are we getting so much info on this game right now? Is this out for Christmas?
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jun 23rd 2008 11:34AM
No the reason why they are releasing alot of info right now is to stop the constant bitching of gamers about it being a WW2 game and it being made by treyarch.
nick @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:44AM
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this yet, but only 4 player online co-op? That's a little disappointing. My favorite feature about COD4 was all the online co-op modes and being able to play in large groups.
I was iffy on the title until now, and now I'm thinking pass.
LordChimp @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:50AM
What?? CoD4 didn't have co-op.
Jakka @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:56AM
Only? I don't remember any console(or PC Games in fact) ever getting past four players. And as LordChimp mentioned, CoD4 didn't camping with Martyrdom and Juggernaut.
thomashenwood @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:57AM
This is co-op, not versus online. It will have all the usual 16 player (or whatever) online battles that COD4 had, but also co-op for the campaign. You'd know this if you could read.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 23rd 2008 10:17AM
You'll have to wait until resistance 2 if you want more than 4 player co-op, cause they're the only ones I've heard of that are even attempting more than 4.
nick @ Jun 23rd 2008 7:22PM
Ok, if they have 16 player MULTIPLAYER, then I'm happy. I thought by the way it was written that they were ONLY going to offer [up to] 4 player multiplayer, which I could care less about.
Vcize @ Jun 23rd 2008 10:16AM
Well, people can rip on Treyarch all they want but at least they got this right over IW.
Can anyone imagine how awesome it would have been to have online co-op for the scene that you're up in the plane dropping bombs in CoD4 with one of you in the plane and one of you on the ground seeing the chaos caused by the other guy?
riggs @ Jun 23rd 2008 12:23PM
*drools*
Obie @ Jun 23rd 2008 12:24PM
I agree, that would have been spectacular.
t_m @ Jun 23rd 2008 10:33AM
sounds great.
I *heart* treyarch
Obie @ Jun 23rd 2008 10:54AM
Damn, I love me some co-op. Alright Treyarch, you have my attention don't mess this up!
DT KAMANCHI @ Jun 25th 2008 9:58AM
COD 4 has putmany other games on there backs. Even new releases that were hugely hyped have been puton shelves getting dusty because COD4 is so addictive. People will buy the game because it is the latest thing out, they don't want their friends having it or being known as just having COD4. It sells itself, the new designers just knew how to cash in.
Realistically, you couldn't ask much more from a FPS than COD4 offers - except maybe online co-op for fans of it. Personally I am not, I prefer open battlefields etc.
We all have our own opinions of a game and how it rates. Each of our opinions is bound to be different but we should respect that. After all, we are fellow gamers making these companies rich.
I was disappointed by Resistance and since that I doubt I will bother with R2.
Personally, I'm a die hard fan of the Socom series back in ps2 days and can't wait for Socom: Confrontation to be released.
Battlefield was pretty good too, although Bad Company Demo leaves a lot to be desired so far.
