Blizzard teaser image is mysterious, evolving

If you've been to one of several Blizzard-owned sites recently, you've probably seen something similar to the above image, a mysterious teaser that's taken over several of their front pages. Today, the image evolved slightly, sending the internet into a frenzy of waiting patiently for new information to be released. ... No, no, we're kidding of course, it's the internet. Have you two met?

The internet has been speculating wildly, and our sister site WoW Insider has been there to document it with an almost disturbing amount of detail. Right now, the camps are split between people who think it's teasing the Wrath of the Lich King beta and those who think a Diablo 3 announcement is imminent. We'd like to posit a third theory: What you see there is clearly ice, and who lives in Iceland? Vikings, that's who. Perhaps even a few lost vikings? Mystery = solved.

My vote would have something with the long overdue StarCraft 2... Which i'm sooo excited for. I don't think its anything to do with Diablo 3... though i waiting for that too. The color blue I associate with StarCraft and a little bit with WarCraft not Diablo :(

There is now a new rune on the new image, which matches the Hel rune found in diablo II down to the markings.

Diablo 3, yeah! I wann kill thousands of dudes for a level. I want extremely graphic conditions. I want epic lootz that can be traded without binding to you for no apparent reason! I want to kill some demons, damnit, and I want a continuation of the story. Baal's soulstone wasn't destroyed.

"Our keen-eyed reader Nkara has found an image that shows the rune which is clearly visible in the new splash screen from Blizzard is a dead ringer for a rune seen on Arthas' sword, Frostmourne in another picture.

As discussed in our previous thread about this topic, there were a couple of rune-like marks on the image but we couldn't confirm anything, however this picture clearly shows the same rune, and it's on Arthas' runeblade. Sorry Diablo fans, speculation squashed :("

They are certainly accomplishing their goals of getting attention. The image is deliberately ambiguous with hints for multiple titles. I wish it was Diablo 3 but I think its going to be WOW.

Dear Internet:
From this point forward, I will cease to care about pointless teasers or the dreaded countdown clocks to announcements. If you wish to announce something, then by all means, please do. I would love to hear it.
