Senior stealth citizen news now, with European Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots sales exceeding one million units in its first week. Konami has called the demand for the game "exceptional," noting that the final chapter in Solid Snake's spiraling saga has seen high sales in all European territories. The 25,000 Limited Edition copies made available to the continent were "almost immediately" sold out. Figures.
The PlayStation 3 sneak-em-up has seen similar success in Japan, outselling its closest competitor by a factor of 12. If you're among the million Metal Gears Sold and don't know your Gekkos from your Frogs, be sure to download the free MGS4 Database from the Euro PlayStation Network this Thursday.

"it woulda sold more over its lifetime probably."
I doubt that only because it's a game that prides itself on cutscenes and graphical prowess. It's like saying Crysis would have sold better on the Wii. There could be 5 million Eskimos, but you still can't easily sell them a fridge. Likewise, I doubt a game with Wii Sports mechanics would sell well with Sixaxis controls.

"...times have changed, get over it."
Nah, it's like a religion. The devout Nintendo fans kept the faith through the dark hours of N64 and Gamecube, so shall the zealous PS3 acolytes keep the torch burning for Sony.
Besides, if you really want to test how long bitterness lasts...try disparaging the Dreamcast sometime.

Konami makes money from games shipped. Stores make money from game sold. So Konami only cares about what they ship cause thats where they make their money.

Yes but if the game fails to sell the company is forced to buy back a portion of the losses. So sales do still matter.

LMAO...I was wondering myself why the gekko's "moo". It does make them more terrifying, though...kind of a like a man-eating cow.

Great sales for MGS 4. The Wii and 360 trolls have shown their ugly heads, but they can't take away from the success of MGS 4. Despite all their stupid predictions of failure of this "not mainstream" title.

It's the absolute meaning of a mainstream title. It's a sequel in a really strong brand, with good advertising support, it's really long and hence people see value, and it has really high production values.
Some people will say that it's not because it has a very difficult convoluted storyline (which I don't mind if the premise is strong enough, for me it's not) or because of it's general oddness, the fact is the majority of the market loves that.

SHIPPED = PREDICTED SALES
SALES = HOW MANY PEOPLE BOUGHT THE PRODUCT
They PREDICTED the game would sell a million in europe. so they shipped them out to europe. Did it actually sell? nobody knows...so don't count your chickens.
And a million for a game with a budget that it did is going to have to do A LOT better than a million for each continent to come out of the red. They need to sell that million (and fast before the used sales start kicking in) and get another million in stat.

I just want to point out that video game publishers make their money from the amount the stores buys from them and not directly if we actually buy them or not. If the customers at the store demand for more of their product the more the store will buy from the publisher. Being "sold" to a customer doesnt really effect how sucessful a game is finacially. Being "shipped" reflects that more. When we see 1 miilion copies shipped, it is meant that 1 million copies were bought by the store and that is a win for konami financially (esp if stores buys the game for about $30 US a copy and sells it to us for $60 US - that's $30 million US if 1 mill got shipped), but it doesnt mean the game is good or not and that 1 million people have a copy. It just means it had good marketing and stores will want to support any product that has a lot of hype.

Why can't people figure out the difference between SHIPPED and SOLD?
Posted: Jun 24th 2008 3:41PM (Unverified) said
1. No, not entirely true. They do in fact occasionally ship stuff back if it isn't worth being on the shelf anymore. Though usually, you're right. Middle man companies usually are quite savvy to how many are going to sell and when and get the right amount ordered.
2. If their products stay on the shelf, you can guarantee that they won't be ordering more anytime soon. The games gotta keep selling so the shelf space/commercial push doesn't shrink.
