Spore getting $80 'Galactic Edition'

By design, Spore is all-encompassing, with nigh infinite possibilities for gameplay, from crafting the very essence of life to managing entire galaxies. But sometimes, you have to go to the bathroom, it's a scientific fact. For those moments, there's the Spore Galactic Edition announced today by Gamestop, available for $79.99. In addition to the game, you'll get:

'Making of Spore' DVD video
'The Human Toolkit' DVD video, by National Geographic
'The Art of Spore' hardback mini-book
Fold-out Spore poster
Premium 100-page Galactic Handbook

So whether nature calls and you need reading material or your significant other wants to watch some TV, you'll have no problem keeping it Spore-centric. And yes, now that you mention it, that was a very depressing sentence.

Its gonna be a great game but what the galactic edition comes with sounds pretty weak. a poster....yay.

I'm guessing the making of DVD will have pictures of all the crew's kids being born, going through high school, and graduating collage...

I graduated from collage sometime in elementary school, mine had pictures of horses.

The sad thing is that when Duke Nukem Forever comes out this will be the case.

Considering I noticed SecuROM was utilizing 15%-25% of my CPU cycles despite not running the Spore program last night, I'm not buying. I'm tired of giving companies money so they can throw malware on my system. Fuck Spore...

Wouldn't know about the RootKit. Heard about it, found a list of effected CDs, realized I'd never buy Barry Manilow and never looked back. I had Starforce degrade by DVD burners performance for a while. Now apparently SecuRom does this weird thing sucking up resources on my machine (and when you're in Photoshop with a 10000x7500 image, yes that does matter). Don't know who's behind SecuRom, but I know it's off my system now.

At this point, I don't really understand PC games copy protection much at all.

It gets cracked fairly rapidly, thereby diminishing it's usefulness. However it makes life difficult for the paying customer.

The primary question game companies need to ask themselves is this: Are the people they are preventing from illegitimately using their games potential customers? Are you making a game that people would pay for?

This is why I wish they'd come out with spore for a console... ANY console, ALL consoles, because the game experience is more straight forward. Copy protection will be the death of PC gaming, not piracy.

Yeah, the DRM is conveniently left out of the list.

The copy protection is supposedly there to prevent casual copying. So that anyone can't just make a copy of a disc and give it to their friend or install the game on their friends computer. I don't understand why they're making the protection worse though. The people that want to crack it will always crack it. You don't need anything but the basic cd check to stop the normal people.

I'm going to laugh so hard if this book is just one page that says something along the lines of "Theres nothing in here because YOU haven't made any creatures yet!"

I'd probably buy this, if SecuROM wasn't included as a "feature".

I'll probably be getting the game, but I doubt I'll be throwing down for the Galactic Edition. The extras, while cool, just aren't worth the added cost to me.

"Making of" videos for movies are cool, because you get to see how they did certain effects. With games, there's not really much magic to it. They programmed it, and it did what they wanted it to do. The end.

Exactly is going to be a great game but the extras are boring.

The Human Toolkit' DVD video and the Galactic Handbook are the only interesting extras but don't add much.

This must be a prelude to the announcement that each section of Spore will be sold seperately for €10!

Does the high price deluxe one come with no SecureROM?

I'll probably buy the game for my friend shes obsessed with The Sims so I'm sure she would like this. don't know if I should pony up the 80 bucks tho for all the extras.

Why are there no extra IN GAME things ?? at least let me paint my Creatures Gold or something , more arms legs etc ... Something in game

dude spoke too soon Ea have already announced that they are going to have expansion packs like the sims ... hahaha, oh i love Ea they never really get the problem people have with them i mean Bf:Bc they actually got it when people petitioned. people don't want to have to pay an arm and a leg for an arm and a leg. i mean sims had free stuff on its website for ages till Ea saw the potential and the rest is history.

They will charge $1 for each toe , $1.50 for each finger

It should come with like a plush, figurine, or bobble head, without something along those lines in the package I'd rather just buy the standard edition.

I put down the $99.14 (price + overnight) without even pausing. I'm a Sporemaniac. :p

back to the story: Do I care much about this super-Spore pack? Nah. I'll still buy the game (just the game), though.

I would buy this if it came with a voucher for a creature from their 3D printer. (Speaking of which, I wonder if that feature will come to fruition?).

I would also buy this if it did not come in one of those stupidly huge boxes.

No thanks, I wouldn't buy this for $10. SecuROM has ruined this release for me. Thanks EA for fucking up my game I wanted to play.

You sheep who say you'll still buy it should read up on what this malware does to your computer first. Disables your DVD drive and burning software among other nasty stuff.

I've never torrented a game.. but this time I might. Good job EA.

Great. Gaming companies testing the waters to see if gamers will pay $80 for a special edition, leading to $70 games in the next generation.

If I had to choose a $50 version with SecuRom or an $80 without, no question I'd spend the $80.

Fuck SecURom, just crack the damn thing after it comes out.
