Solid Snake's swan song seems destined to be heard by many a PlayStation 3 owner, with Famitsu (translated by IGN) confirming that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has shipped three million copies to various destinations worldwide. Speaking at a recent Sony investor meeting in Tokyo, SCE president Kaz Hirai reportedly noted that Hideo Kojima's opus has had a beneficial effect on PS3 hardware sales.
Though its effects have been quite clear in Japan, the UK's Chart-Track group has previously stated that MGS4, despite being a top seller, only managed to have "minimal impact" on the PS3's selling rate. Konami has made no announcement regarding US sales yet, though we expect to see plenty of Metal Gear sold action on next month's NPD report.

Why would you ship something that no one was buying?

Shipped does equal sold to Konami, cause that's when they get paid.
You're trying to say shipped doesn't equal sold through, which is true. In this case though, I don't think these copies will sit there too long. It's not like MS big channel stuff of 360s in early 2007 which lasted about 6 months.

hmmm... 3 million.. not bad... but one wonders how many they could have shipped/sold if they had been able to shoehorn it onto the 360. someone at konami must be asking that question.

Shoehorn? It would be a totally different looking/feeling game on the Xbox. About the only thing they could do a 1:1 port with is MGO.

I bought a the MGS4 80 GB PS3 bundle for this game, and I'm telling you, more people need to experience it than 3 million people. That's how amazing it is. I actually want it to come out on the 360 so another 10 million people can experience it!

I doubt it would sell on the 360 anyway, not enough twitching, shooting, or colorful rainbow weapons and armor.

This game was incredible! It deserved all the 10;s it got! If you are sad about the long cutscenes HELLO ITS A MGS GAME they always have huge cutscenes, plus they were amazing and i didnt mind watching them, especially since you could pause them to take a piss when ya needed to.

I've played a few of the prior Metal Gear games but I'm not a diehard fan by any means. I certainly don't know who half the characters are. However, MGS4 does a good job of explaining who everyone is and providing context on past events and storylines, so you don't actually need to have played the prior games. It'll make more sense if you did, but its perfectly understandable without the background.
It's a good game, and unlike a few of the previous Metal Gear games, kept my interest through the cut scenes. People make fun of the cut scenes, but a lot of them are damn good. I've replayed a few levels specifically to rewatch some of the cutscenes.

Haha. I'm laughing at the Sony Fanboys saying that they think MGS4 will outsell Halo 3 are long. Like it or lump it, Halo 3 sold 8 million in just over 3 months (with roughly 5.25 million in the first month if I remember correctly) and is apparently nearing 10 million shipped. 3 million < 5.25 million.
Sorry Sony Fanboys, but whether you rate Halo good or not - MGS just isn't going to match the numbers

Halo 3 still stucks.
And I don't know I'd brag about Halo 3's shipped figures, since so many remained sitting on shelves. The local Fry's is down to their final 3 cat helmet editions now. They'll hopefully have them sold out before they've been there a year.

At least I can take comfort in knowing it's a far far far far far better game than Halo 2...I mean 3.

So first week sales comparisons:
MGS4 = 3 million SHIPPED.
Halo 3 = Over 5 million SOLD
I have a feeling Konami is already starting on the 360 version.

Not true dude. When your development costs are over $100 million to make a game you are waaay more concerned about sold numbers. Shipped means the game is still sitting on store shelves. And if games sit on the shelves long enough they either get sent back to the distributor or sent to the recycle bin. Either way Konami shareholders are probably trying to stay optimistic right now but to say they don't care about how many copies are sold is crazy. Why do you think this info came out all of a sudden the same time that Sony released their info about how much money their gaming division lost? Companies normally don't post how many games are shipped because they know those numbers are not as meaningful to the bottom line - profitability. Sony has the numbers for how many copies sold during the first week. So why are they releasing shipped numbers instead of sold numbers?
