OMGS4: Watch someone earn Big Boss emblem in under 3 hours
We think it goes without saying that the above video is spoilerific, but just to be clear, we're putting that word in bold so your eyes quickly dart to it. Clocking in at just over 152 minutes, here's a video demonstration of how you earn the Big Boss emblem in Metal Gear Solid 4, which involves beating the game on the highest difficulty with no deaths, no alerts, no kills, no recovery items, no stealth suit and no special items ... all in under 5 hours. Prepare your mind to be utterly blown.

Yawn

Yeah we get it, moron, you don't like the game. Thrilling that it's important for you to dig on it any chance you can get.
This game doesn't really intrigue me, but it's apparently pretty awesome, and damned if I ever feel the need to go out of my way to actually rag on it.
Reminds me of when that dbag Bowser decided to get all uppity and rip on GoW2 all up and down a big thread.
deaftly @ Jun 26th 2008 6:01PM
So without the cutscenes MGS4 is pretty much only a 5-6 hour game. Dizzam
Martez @ Jun 26th 2008 6:06PM
If you rush through it knowing exactly what to do, sure. My first playthrough was about 22 hours, and I read somewhere that the total cutscene time is around 8 hours.
All the Metal Gear Solid games can be beaten this quickly when you've already gone through it before.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 26th 2008 6:25PM
Yeah I remember rushing through MGS 2 in about 4-6 hours on my 3rd playthrough. My first playthrough of 4 took about 20 hours but I was also going the action route, headshotting everything in sight >:D
Haggard @ Jun 26th 2008 6:44PM
Remember the video of someone beating the original half-life in 45 minutes?

jerks :P
SugarDaddy @ Jun 27th 2008 9:21AM
Ha, you got voted down for speaking the truth. That says a lot about these whiney MGS fanboys.
whookid @ Jun 26th 2008 6:02PM
Wow.. that's sad. All this time building up MGS4 and it can be beat in less than 3 hours. Too much story not enough gaming.
whookid @ Jun 26th 2008 6:03PM
My comment applies to pretty much all games these days as well.
Martez @ Jun 26th 2008 6:06PM
Most games can be beaten ridiculously fast when rushed through.
kobebryunt @ Jun 26th 2008 6:09PM
This isn't any ordinary game though. It's MGS4
GoldenS1104 @ Jun 26th 2008 6:38PM
Just to throw this out there. I saw a speed run of Super Mario 64 where the person got all 120 stars (didn't use glitches) and beat the game in just under three hours. You'd be surprised at how quickly some games can be beaten when you know exactly what you have to do. Of course, that was an extreme case where the player did take a few shortcuts (completely within the games parameters though) and practiced a lot I'm sure.
Paul (PSN: heypaul) @ Jun 26th 2008 7:34PM
It's pretty interesting that you can tell who has and hasn't played the game just by the tone of their comments. For those who have played the game, the typical reaction is "WTF? How is that even possible?" For those who haven't, it's "Ha! What a joke how short this game is!"
I tried doing this for a whole of five minutes until the Gekkos began jumping out of nowhere and killing me with one hit. Considering that there's no save/load state feature (that so many of these speed runs use, via emulation), and that the game makes it one hell of a chore to load a previous checkpoint, this is a seriously impressive feat.
Martez @ Jun 26th 2008 6:04PM
Bitchin'.
FOXHOUND @ Jun 27th 2008 7:16AM
I second that. o_o;
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 26th 2008 6:04PM
Most impressive. I was going to shoot for this until I learned just how much it takes to get it, then I said well...fuck that :(
Slayer @ Jun 26th 2008 6:17PM
Same here. I completed the game, but I didn't try to go for any extras or emblems. I'm just too lazy to care.
matthew_neitzer @ Jun 26th 2008 6:55PM
I was going to try as well, but no alerts?!?! I could never do that.
Slayer @ Jun 26th 2008 7:04PM
I could pull of the no alerts, but I heard you have to get no kills either. If that's the case, I don't think I can pull it off.
Mr.ESC @ Jun 26th 2008 6:08PM
"Which involves beating the game on the highest difficulty with no deaths".
How can you kill that which has no life?
SPOOOOCK! @ Jun 26th 2008 7:18PM
"By removing the head or destroying the brain" to answer your question, haven't you seen Shaun of the Dead?

Just putting you on the correct path.
Beatz @ Jun 26th 2008 6:10PM
Why does game length matter in how great a game is? I hear Super Mario Bros, the standard to which all games are held, can be beaten rather quickly. Besides, Metal Gear Solid has always been a franchise that you can play through repeatedly because there's several different ways to play it.
Noshino @ Jun 26th 2008 6:25PM
well, actually, most of the titles that are considered AAA by many, and hell, even the classics, can be beaten rather quickly if you know exactly what to do...
Just look up speedrun...
Jayslacks @ Jun 26th 2008 6:11PM
Jesus Christ! How many cutscenes does this damn game have?
Jomolungma @ Jun 26th 2008 6:16PM
That was my thought. Admittedly, I'm not an MGS fan or even a casual MGS player, but just watching how many times this dude had to skip cutscenes in the first 5 minutes of the game made me frustrated - I can't imagine how much I'd hate actually having to watch/skip them myself.
Gronk @ Jun 26th 2008 6:17PM

congratulations, you're an idiot
Titanium_Orchid @ Jun 26th 2008 6:11PM
Impressive play though. I can't believe this guy was able to beat Liquid Ocelot so throughly.
A short game does not equal a bad game. What is the speedrun time for the original half-life? 15 min?
LaughingTarget @ Jun 26th 2008 6:24PM
Doesn't beat the amazingness that is the 8 minute Morrowind run.
Titanium_Orchid @ Jun 26th 2008 6:30PM
Dayum. I need to check that out.
PojoMofo @ Jun 26th 2008 6:17PM
took me 4 hours to get through Act 1...
on Solid Normal :(
Obie @ Jun 26th 2008 6:17PM
So....20 hours of cutscenes and 3 hours of gameplay.....I think I will *skip* this one.
PojoMofo @ Jun 26th 2008 6:22PM
If you rush through as quickly as possible, most games are about this length.
It is taking most people 20-25 hours to complete, and with about 8 hours of cutscenes, a "normal" playthough is actually a good 12-17 hours of gameplay, more than most games now-a-days (Im looking at you, Bourne Conspiracy)
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 26th 2008 6:29PM
Let's not forget the 4 hour game that was COD 4 (which reminds me...how long will COD WaW be joystiq?)
8 hours of cutscenes sounds about right to me, if not shorter. I only remember 2 that went close to the 60 minute range, most were kinda short.
Then again it took me 20 hours so 12-13 hours of gameplay is pretty good for an action/stealth game.
Mr.ESC @ Jun 26th 2008 6:37PM
MGS games are like Resident Evil games.
First play 8 to 16 hours depending on your suckage level.
In the second play you can beat it in less than 2 hours. I'm gladly surprised that the Speed run last 2:30 hours, that means the first play will take a while to finish especially if you want to enjoy it.
Normally I don’t go for this runs since after the story mode is complete there isn’t anything else except going online for a week or two.
I have yet to buy a Ps3,I’m watching all the MGS4 videos because I don't know if I will ever play it since I don't know if the bundles will ever make it here.
Obie @ Jun 26th 2008 6:55PM
It took me 10 hours to beat COD4, of course I played it on Veteran, 4 hours sounds about right for easy mode.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 26th 2008 7:03PM
4 was on normal for me. I don't ever play easy mode on any game. Veteran took me about 7 including that very annoying bonus airplane level.
Covus @ Jun 26th 2008 6:21PM
I beat The Boss Extreme in 4 hours. It's not that hard if you do one Act a day.
=)
Mr.ESC @ Jun 26th 2008 6:23PM
You can save or is like getting the Dead Rising 7 day survivor achievemnt? (Leave the console on)
Also what you get?
I never go for the Big Boss run I mean after I finished the game I really don't feel like playing it again.I mean MGS2 I think you only get a Wig for Raiden of something.
Covus @ Jun 26th 2008 6:33PM
You can save at each checkpoint, Mr. ESC. At some times, I had to keep trying to pass an area, but eventually I got passed it.
You get 2 unique guns and the Big Boss Mask. There are a couple of masks to acquire in MGS4. I have all of them now. I also acquired the Altair costume.
=)
Covus @ Jun 26th 2008 6:36PM
Yes, you can save at each checkpoint, Mr. Esc. You get the Big Boss Mask and 2 unique guns. You can also acquire Altair's rags.
Mr.ESC @ Jun 26th 2008 6:41PM
Wow, so I can save/load? About friggin time, I have always wanted to do that in MGS especially in MGS3.
I don’t think I want the Altair costume, for me Altair is the image of defeat and deception.
P.S Am I the only one that considers Snake and Ocelot fight a bit hilarious I mean senior citizen Kombat WTF? How can they take so much punishment from each other?
Covus @ Jun 26th 2008 6:56PM
Heh, yeah, it's a little odd but it's a great part of the game when you get to it, Mr. Esc. I don't know if you're going to get the game or not, so I won't spoil it for you.
Yeah, you can save and load when you get an alert or make a mistake. I beat it on Big Boss and took my time the first time I went through it. There are a million ways to play each Act and the action cut-scenes are awesome. There are some points in the game that are very frustrating, especially if you do a speed run, like I did.
Mr.ESC @ Jun 27th 2008 12:18AM
It can’t be more frustrating than getting all the achievements in COD4 or getting gold medals in all portal challenges using a friggin gamepad.
Thanks for the information :)
losttoys @ Jun 26th 2008 6:24PM
Or you could just download someone's save that already has everything unlocked. Yay easy for Save Game sharing!
Jawmuncher @ Jun 26th 2008 6:25PM
Wow It's going to take alot of practice for me to get that.
Sean @ Jun 26th 2008 6:32PM
That's ridiculous. At around 1:15 it goes:
CutScene .. Loading Screen .. CutScene .. Loading Screen .. CutScene .. Chapter Splash .. CutScene .. Codec
That's basically 4 cutscenes in a row without a single second of gameplay.
